I’m reading about linguistic landscapes in Israel for work, and it’s gotten me thinking about the linguistic landscapes in Ireland. In one respect there is a lot more Irish on the signs and shop fronts than Arabic in Palestinian areas in Israel (based on what I’m reading), and yet the actual use of our native tongue is far less. I know very few people who are actually fluent in Irish and most of them either attended Gaelscoils or are Irish teachers.
The students who undertook the research in the book I’m reading are so passionate about Arabic and preserving their culture, meanwhile in Ireland we are slowly letting it slide away. It’s thought-provoking.

FUNDRAISING ANNOUNCEMENT!📣
To mark Pride Month this year, I made my ‘Persist Anyway’ artwork as a reaction to some of the recent challenges to LGBT+ rights and freedoms arising worldwide.
The first step I took in making my piece was to gather snippets of text in the form of digital screenshots from as many news articles relating to LGBT+ issues as I could, all published within the last six months. It was pretty sobering to see all that has been happening, not just in the US and UK, but on a global scale. While many countries mentioned in reports were already limited in LGBT+ freedoms, recent events have made life even harsher, including in areas that previously weren’t as affected; with stories ranging from bans of Pride parades and flags and trans people being unable to use public bathrooms safely, to the arrests of book publishers over books with LGBT+ related content, and fierce prison sentences for anyone spreading ‘LGBT propaganda’.
So with all of this in mind, I decided to put my ‘Persist Anyway’ piece for sale during the rest of this month on my Etsy shop as art prints, with €10 from the proceeds of every purchase to be donated to Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI). I thought this would be a nice way to do something positive, and contribute to the LGBT+ community that I am proud to be a part of.
I am lucky to have some good friends among the transgender community and with my partner being agender, this makes this fundraiser even closer to home, and important to me.
Through my research for this artwork, I’ve learned how the transgender community in particular has unfortunately been heavily targeted in both politics, the media and more hateful members of the public, so I thought that TENI would be a good organisation to donate to as they do great work in providing support, information and advocacy for Irish trans people and the wider public.
You can buy this print in my Etsy shop by going to https://briarhideillust.etsy.com/listing/4316739038 , or by clicking the link at the tops of this post. I’d be very thankful if you would like to share this fundraiser with friends and followers too, it all helps!
Happy Pride! 🌈

In light of some of the many things happening across the world this year, I thought this Pride Month needed a special illustration.
Happy Pride Month, may we all stay safe, look after each other, and keep painting our rainbows, no matter what. đŸŒˆđŸłïžâ€đŸŒˆđŸłïžâ€âš§ïž

Thank you for the extra recommendations! I will add them asap.
Also! I bought The Undetectables when I was in Gay's The Word last time and I’m so excited to start it! I got Reeling in the Queers by Páraic Kerrigan and couldn't leave yours behind but didn’t realise you were also Irish until I got home.

Another great piece from The Journal about trans healthcare in Ireland!
This is a very sympathetic article for once. I was not expecting that from The Journal! It mentioned a lot about how invasive the questions were from the NGS, though I’ve also heard from other people (adults around 30 or older) that they were refused care if their parents didn’t attend the appointment with them. Nonbinary people as well as those with autism or ADHD are also frequently denied care. I would’ve liked if they spoke to any trans masc people in their investigation but for such a supportive article in these times I will take it.

Huge news for people interested in similar things to this blog, the Say Something In Welsh team is launching an Irish language course! Resources, especially listening resources have been quite hard to find in Irish, I know way more people that can read and write in Irish than speak it with any confidence at all, and the Say Something method gave me so much more confidence in my own Welsh speaking, I imagine then coming into the Irish language teaching space is a really good thing.
Their founder Aran Jones says they've been in talks with the Irish government for 'copromotion', and while I'm not fully sure what that entails, it must be a road to having more and more widely available, quality learning resources for Gaeilge.
Since this blog is followed not just by Welsh learners, but a lot of people generally interested in language learning and Celtic studies, thought I'd mention it here! Dyn ni'n dod nĂŽl i feddwl yn Gymraeg yn fuan, dwi'n siwr :)

Hey everyone,
I’ve been building a small Irish language learning app called Píosa Beag over the last few weeks. It gives you one new word or proverb each day, with pronunciation and a streak system to help you stick with it.
I’m a first-year software dev student and this is my first ever app. Not finished yet, but I’d love to share the journey and get any thoughts or ideas. Check it out here: https://piosabeag.ie
SlĂĄn!
This person has shared their in-progress app for learning Irish - I’ve included the link to both their site and their post on Reddit. Thought some of ye might be interested!

Dia duit! Can you recommend any Irish speaking youtubers? I mean "normal" content like vlogs, diy, gaming etc (i'm not picky). I already follow quite a few channels focused on language learning but I would love some more exposure to natural language in that context if that makes sense? GRMMA!
I think Foil, Arms and Hog have a couple of sketches with Irish in? And Clisare has definitely done videos as Gaeilge. But other than that I can’t help. I don’t really watch YouTube other than the odd time. On Instagram I enjoy SeamBoySeam and Gaylegeoiri but I don’t think they do what you’re looking for.
Anyone?
