"Irish is a dead language" "no one uses irish anymore" you can pry this language from my cold dead hands. It's not dead and if it was I would still love it (my ancient greek and latin homies know what's up)

Gotta start treating english like monolinguistic english speakers treat other languages
Did you know English doesn't have a word for the Irish word 'mar'? Instead they have to say 'is the cause' of or 'because' for short

It is never too late to learn to speak Irish.
You do not have to be Irish to speak Irish.
Once you're out of school, there is no grammar police and most people are just excited to have someone to speak Irish with.
Incorporating Irish words into your day when you're not fluent (I have to go to the leithreas, throw it in the bruscar, that's a gorgeous gĂșna) is an act of decolonisation.
Helping people to understand the language is an act of love.
Gaeilge go deo â€ïž

Grammar time
This was my mams when she was in school and she gave it to me. It has everything from how to congugate regular verbs and every irregular verb, how to put things into questions, how to reply in the affirmative/the negative, useful question words, prepositions, all of the essentials. It's okay if you don't understand all of it, I didn't at first, but now I love this cheat sheet

Saying this as an Irish person since the new Hozier album just came out and there are lyrics in Irish; itâs Irish or Gaeilge (pronounced âgwhale-gaâ or âgale-gaâ depending on region), not Gaelic or Celtic or any other name people come up with.
Itâs just a normal language that people speak in their everyday life. We learn it in school in the republic. People like myself are bilingual in Irish and English. Itâs not a âfairy aesthetic cottage core leprechaunâ language.
Please respect it. Our language is a touchy subject seen as how England tried to erase it by forcing English on us and severely punishing those who spoke Irish.
At the same time that does NOT mean it is a dead language. Our (in the republic) road and safety signs are in both Irish and English, same with legal documents. Our politicians speak it, and we are trying to preserve the language!
Anyways enjoy the album!

since a ton of people are getting into music as gaeilge because of hozier, can i recommend my fave artist, rĂłisĂn seoighe? she's a native irish speaker and language ambassador whose lyrics often involve the preservation of irish culture and deep rage against colonization. nĂl mĂ© marbh ("i'm not dead") makes me cry like a baby and sin do lamh ("reach out") makes me want to burn all of colonialism down. she's also done several collabs with imlĂ©, another EXCELLENT irish language band that does modern-feeling rock and dance music! my fave of their collabs right now is ĂAD ("jealous").
both artists have less than 1,700 monthly listeners on spotify simply because they sing in irish & they deserve more bc their music Really Is Excellent. translations of many songs are google-able & when there Aren't english translations, it's really good practice for people learning irish!

I finished watching CrĂĄ yesterday and now I need to try to persuade as much of tumblr as possible to watch it too.
It's an Irish-language murder mystery TV series set in Donegal, though it's subtitled in English, so you don't need Irish to follow it. It's not a cheerful series - CrĂĄ translates to torment - and nearly every single character is in some way corrupt, compromised or morally grey. But it's extremely well-produced, it's gripping, it has an utterly stunning soundtrack (by a Breton composer!) and it's visually gorgeous:
This is the first ever Irish-language TV show to get a primetime slot in Northern Ireland. And I would utterly love for the BBC to invest in more of this kind of thing (it's a BBC/TG4 coproduction). So if this sounds like something you'd be interested in, please help make it a success!

*grabs you by the shoulders and shakes you violently*
Listen to me, Irish spelling is logical and has rules. Your unfamiliarity with our language does not change that.

Yes, it is! That is the sound those letters make! All you're doing is telling me you can't read!
#gaeilge#sorry saw someone arguing that irish makes no sense compared to english french and german#but could not be convinced to take into account that the main difference was their own familiarity with these languages

Also btw every single complaint about irish pronounciation and spelling in schools would be solved if we hammered in the slender/broad distinctions early because it would become abundantly clear why this 't' has to be surrounded by 'i's and it isn't just a thing they decided to do one day and more people would be able to spell words from just hewring them and pronounciation from just reading them send tweet
