Given what we know, I assume Ryōshū and the Spider's House in general are deeply connected to weapons, specifically the special weapons each Pinky member uses.
We know the Spider's House is connected to art but I don't think they're that connected to the Ring specifically. I think they are their own kind of faction.

I love the rancid vibes but I think people are wildly overestimating the role Lei Heng played in Ryōshū's life and trauma.
She obviously hates him and he does seem to visit the Spider's House often, but I think the way he talked was genuine, if that makes sense. He doesn't know the details of what happened.
I'm sure he probably sexually assaulted her and they had some weird relationship given Ryōshū's love/obsession/desire of his blade.
But people saying he's Yuzuki's father is such a reach for me. Would be a good AU to explore. But I don't think he knows much about her deeper life or what happens between his sporadic visits. Nor do I think he cares.
I don't think she's special to him and I don't think he's special to her, just a reminder of past situation in a much deeper level than previous members of the Fingers.
It's not even that he's part of the Thumb that bristles her. It's that he's from the Pinky. She calls it out at the very first meeting. While Ryōshū is obviously intertwined with all the Fingers, it seems her deeper trauma is specifically with the Pinky. She isn't phased by the Middle or the Ring in the same way as when she sees Lei Heng and the first actual sentence she is able to say about him is her talking about how he went from the Pinky to the Thumb.
All for him being a freak to her and making her uncomfortable and pushing his advantage. I definitely think he raped her. But I don't think it's much deeper than that. I think the deeper connection lies with her and the Pinky, and specifically the weapons they use.

Six is considered the number for good luck in Chinese (good fortune, "smooth sailing", joy)
While four is considered bad luck in both Chinese and Japanese. (death) ((although it can also be close to a lucky number as well in Chinese sometimes I think))
There is NO way Hong Lu being 6 and Ryōshū being 4 wasn't on purpose.
Actually I'm headcanoning it now: Hong Lu became the jade because he was born 6/6, a very lucky date. (In the book the fact he was born with the jade was his big thing and other siblings were named for the date of their birth. So combining them.)
Meanwhile, what if Ryōshū was treated as an outcast and a bad omen because of her 4/4 birth that it lead her to embracing it and becoming a "demon" or killer. Maybe she was sold to the Spider's House because of her unlucky birthdate. Maybe she sought it out after being treated so badly for her birthday.

"throwing up flowers"
hanahaki. hanahakiiiii you know you want to
Dream of the Red Chamber has close to literally the first depiction of something close to hanahaki with Daiyu throwing up blood and occasionally flower petals when she has her fits so no literally I'm doing it.

Gonna say something that will make no sense to anyone but that's okay.
Ryōshū is like a better Mr Veils to me.

I think I've settled on hong lu's eye being something related to stars/outskirts/singularies. jia mu made a deal or wish for it with something in the outskirts and so hong lu has the debt of tears/has to suffer in order to water the eye.

do you have any headcanons why ryoshu has such a thing about scent? it's one of her weird things that pops up a lot but people never really talk about. maybe her chain smoking is related to it?
I think she has a heightened sense of smell. Maybe she has bad eyesight or something but I like the idea of her smell being stronger than a normal human's.
Also with her smoking, I like the idea she does it because she doesn't care much for her body. She also borderline starves herself for the same reason. A kind of self harm as she tunnel vision focuses on either finishing the Hell Screen or because she feels she has nothing else to live for if it's after her daughter's death.

would u be interested in expanding on your thoughts on ryoshu hong lu parallels 👀.. i would be interested…
YES.
They contrast each other in ways that make them VERY similar. It drives me insane. It's like beyond just opposites because they also have a TON in common.
Red and Blue tropes
Fire and Water
Hong Lu's source is about the Buddhist Heaven. Ryōshū's is about the Buddhist Hell.
As a tangent of this, Hong Lu has an association in his source with the gods and good spirits, while Ryōshū in both source and now canon due to the whole "Asura" thing, has strong connections with demons and negative spirits.
Sadist and masochist. Hong Lu's masochism I not that obvious to a lot of people but even others call him out on the fact he wants to die.
Boyish girl and girlish boy need I say more. Yeah that's a reach because neither are the only ones of those tropes on the bus but. Look.
Okay you can have similarities now
They both have a strong connection to art in their source. A painter and a poet.
Both finally gain the 'enlightenment' at the end of their sources at the cost of the life of someone they loved.
They both have very strong connections in their sources with hanging and nooses.
The obvious connection to Buddhism and a monk playing important roles in their sources.
I had a lot more to say but I only got four hours of sleep and they took 10 vials of blood from me

My next fic I think is gonna be sfw-ish character exploration of Hong Lu like I did with Yi Sang years ago. Really want to hammer out some of headcanons and also do deep dive into transgender stuff.
I think the dam scene literally was Hong Lu coming to terms with the fact she can now deal with her emotions and can start to transition.
Also because of this headcanon I think with Hong Lu I'll use he/him for before canto 8 and she/her (with some he/him still mixed in sometimes) for after... I think that is the perfect place narratively.
