I've heard a lot of people say asking an autistic person not to stim is like asking someone not to breathe, but I've always had trouble with that analogy because we can technically live without stimming. But I could never think of a better way to explain it. Until I read Clan of the Cave Bear, a prehistoric fiction book in which Ayla, a cro-magnon little girl, is adopted by a clan of Neanderthals. She has to adapt to their different social standards, and part of that is that she has to train herself not to laugh or cry, and she experiences a deep sense of isolation while hiding all these natural parts of herself to fit in. And I realized that is exactly what it's like. Sure, we can live without stimming, but wouldn't you agree it's abuse to train a child not to cry or laugh because the sounds are annoying or there's "no point to it?" What if a child was incentivized with rewards or punishment to never show emotion vocally? That would be child abuse. That's exactly what is done to autistic people without a second thought. Not stimming isn't like not breathing, it's like not laughing or crying.

as an autistic kid I got criticized for not making eye contact. so as an adult I trained myself to make very consistent eye contact (easier said than done). this in turn has led to some people telling me it’s “kinda weird” that I “stare so much.” the moral of this story is there is actually no pleasing neurotypicals

Adhd tip #73959
Need to get something done? Dress up for it. Put on a 16th century peasant's dress to vaccuum the house. Wear a tux to do laundry. Pull on a maid outfit and kittycat ears to tidy your room

Neuroptypicals keep saying shit like ‘stand still’ and ‘stop fidgeting’. Bitch, this is my idle animation.
