Bonus from my last post, here's a little timelapse of me working on a portion of a scene that you can see in motion in the animatic!

Howdy, Tumblr! I just wanted to pop on here and finally share my animatic - Obviously not finished and there are revisions to be done to this version, but I hope you enjoy nonetheless. More coming soon!

I thought I'd take a moment and a few quick notes about my process for rotoscoping a frame. First I filmed each scene and took the raw footage into procreate - Which is not a good app for animation, but I insist on using it anyway - And edit the original video to be a bit more animation friendly by taking out frames I don't need.
Tumblr media
After I have a video I can work with I go through frame by frame and draw over my subject on a new layer. In this case I was working on the scene where my POV character knocks on the trunk of a tree, so the subject I was rotoscoping out was my hand.
Tumblr media
Then, I can hide the background layer of the original footage, and I have a nice clean animation of my subject moving that I can put into my final composition.

Here's a little bonus snapshot of what my layers look like in-program. Pro tip, Folks, always name your layers (or else)! I'm bad about that lol.

There are lots of ways to rotoscope and I'm certain there's a better way to go about it than this, too, but if you're patient enough and you want a clean, smooth animation, this is definitely a way to get it! Hope you enjoyed. :)

Hi!
Hello and welcome! For those that don't know me, I'm currently pursuing my BFA in animation, and I'll be using this blog for a bit to document my progress on my junior thesis - A 90 second 2D animated surrealist film titled "Knock on Wood." Stay tuned for more details if you're interested, and feel free to reach out at any time if you want to connect or just say hi!
