see every time a poll trying to collect ethnicity statistics on tumblr comes around it always ends up staggeringly unbalanced and like. technically if you compare it to the census of most primarily english speaking countries its not super unexpected (the USA is allegedly around 60% white, the UK and canada are allegedly around 80%). but i do think the ratio has been getting worse over the years and if users on other websites say 'yeah tumblr Feels Super White' then theres gotta be something in the water ya know. you dont need numbers to prove the vibes are off. and considering this website has a history of randomly banning black users i think i know Why the vibes are off.

The thing that I have not yet seen randomly cross my dash about Benoit Blanc, and what I love most about him: He really is one of those old-timey detectives, and the reason for that is that he is a plot device rather than a character.
Modern detective stories tend to always make the story about the detective, rather than the people involved in the case. Just think BBC's Sherlock (2010-2017). The story is about Sherlock. The fact that he solves crimes comes second to what he is up to in his private life. Like, how many of his clients do you remember vividly? How many of them feel like the story revolves around them? Not many, I guess. Meanwhile if you look at older detective stories, the character of the detective is much more static, and what is really interesting about the separate episodes is either the case, or the people involved in the case. The most obvious example might be The Lone Ranger TV show (1949-1957), in which the titular character is basically cardboard. The ones who make the story live are the people the episode revolves around, and they are all so colourful and fleshed out and have their complex stories going on that you will remember. The Lone Ranger is just some rando who arrives in the middle of the story to help them out.
I really saw that with Benoit Blanc, especially in Knives Out. It's not his story. It's Marta's, and to a lesser extent, the family's. Blanc is just there to help her out, but it could be anyone else and the story wouldn't change much. You could just replace him with Sherlock Holmes, or even the Lone Ranger, magically update their knowledge of 21st century technology and social dynamics, and they would act the exact same way.
As a fan of older detective stories, I can't say how much I loved this about him.

I thought it sounded just like the sort of drug a man would invent. Here was a woman in terrible pain, obviously feeling every bit of it or she wouldn't groan like that, and she would go straight home and start another baby, because the drug would make her forget how bad the pain had been, when all the time, in some secret part of her, that long, blind, doorless and windowless corridor of pain was waiting to open up and shut her in again.
- Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

Love red and blue color-coding but it does make me think sometimes, what about yellow. You know, the third primary color? When did we collectively decide that yellow is thirdwheeling

Being anti-death penalty is literally the easiest stance ever. People just say "but should the state kill THIS type of person?" and you just say "no". Not killing people is so fucking easy actually

I am gently taking your hands and begging you, BEGGING YOU, to understand that humans are not inherently harmful to the planet. We are animals who are part of the ecosystem. We belong here. This is our home. We belong here. You belong here. Yes, you belong here.

Honestly I'm very glad that the awareness of children being one of, if not the most vulnerable group in society and therefore needing protection is being spread, but something about people's reactions being like "don't hate children for being annoying (in any capacity) in public, hate the parents instead" is so odd to me. Some of y'all genuinely think people who choose to have children should be responsible for you never having to exist in the same space as those children while somehow simultaneously providing a healthy environment for them.
Yes (most!!) parents choose to have children, but does that mean you can't give them any grace or compassion at all? Do you have to personally ensure they have the hardest time possible simply for being a minor inconvenience to you? What about the village? Would it kill you to be a villager every now and then? Come on.

Thinking about Willoughby and Ethel.. Ethel is this traumatised lonely girl, who sees Willoughby as this bright light, that sucks away all the darkness within her. Willoughby is an equally traumatised lonely boy, who’s used to everyone leaving him, seeing Ethel as the only person who could finally relate to him. Ethels love for Willoughby is almost obsessive, she kind of sees him as practically a second God, this tough guy who can take anything, and isn’t scared of it. And then finally, she starts seeing the real him, starting to doubt weather he’s actually not scared of anything. Maybe Willoughby has a breakdown or is suicidal, maybe under the influence and the tornado breaks out (tornado could be just a metaphor as well) Ethel freaks out, and leaves him all alone. Willoughby feels scared and betrayed, that the one person he trusted leaves him like everyone else have. Naturally he feels like he has nothing left in the town anymore. He’s angry, broken and depressed so he leaves. Ethel realises the gravity of her actions, and blames herself while mourning for the loss of her one true love.
This is just my interpretation of the story. Hayden really outdid herself on this album it is so heartbreaking.

You guys know that study where two groups of people were shown an identical short clip of a baby and one group was told it was a baby girl and the other group was told it's a baby boy, and that greatly affected the peoples' perception of the baby's personality and behavior? Now imagine that, but woke. That's astrology.

The thing I hate most in fiction is when a character who was rebellious, counterculture, or nonconforming in some way becomes a more societal acceptable version of themselves, and this is portrayed as a good thing and as character growth.
For example, butch woman or tranmasc characters becoming more feminine and motherly. Or punk characters changing their hair and style of dress to a more culturally acceptable standard.
I hate conformity as shorthand for maturity.

One of the less enjoyable parts of writing is definitely the realization that when there's an interesting situation, you're the one who has to resolve it. Like hm I wonder what happens next. Oh right. That's my job
