On the controversy of writing fanfiction...
Over the last few years, I’ve discovered the world of fanfiction. At first, I was in the “fanfiction is the lowest form of writing” boat (as I know a lot of people can be). But I finally caved in and read a Harry Potter fanfiction that, while explicit and rather out of my comfort zone, was also really well done. It sparked a plethora of ideas in my head, and I eventually decided to write a few stories myself. Over the next two years, I churned out two novel-length stories and a handful of short stories. That’s more than I’ve gotten out of my own original work. Ever. And that’s left me wondering.
I set deadlines for myself when writing fanfiction (which I have since stopped doing in order to focus on my original ideas). It forced me to write consistently. I posted a new chapter every week. No, it wasn’t my best work ever, but I completed it. That makes me wonder if maybe it’s the deadline that I set for myself that felt . . . definite . . . that got me to write so often. I finished one of those novel-length stories within 10 months (which was fine by me), and the other one was just over 11 months. If I could churn out my original work that fast, then maybe I would stand a better chance of getting published someday.
And that, friends, leaves yet another question. How do I do this? I want to write as often (and as successfully) as I did when I was writing fanfiction. But I don’t want to post it the same way because I’m afraid someone will try and steal my idea and market it as theirs.
Paranoid? Possibly. Careful? Definitely.

Yet another thing to do when I've finished my novel. 😆
Are These Filter Words Weakening Your Story?
After putting my writing on hold for several weeks, I decided to jump back in. I expected to find all sorts of problems with my story–inconsistencies in the plot, lack of transitions, poor characterization–the works. But what began to stick out to me was something to which I’d given little thought in writing.
Filter words.
What are Filter Words?
Actually, I didn’t even know these insidious creatures had a name until I started combing the internet for info.
Filter words are those that unnecessarily filter the reader’s experience through a character’s point of view. Dark Angel’s Blog says:
“Filtering” is when you place a character between the detail you want to present and the reader. The term was started by Janet Burroway in her book On Writing.
In terms of example, you should watch out for:
To see
To hear
To think
To touch
To wonder
To realize
To watch
To look
To seem
To feel (or feel like)
Can
To decide
To sound (or sound like)
To know
I’m being honest when I say my manuscript is filled with these words, and the majority of them need to be edited out.
What do Filter Words Look Like?
Let’s imagine a character in your novel is walking down a street during peak hour.
You might, for example, write:
Sarah felt a sinking feeling as she realized she’d forgotten her purse back at the cafe across the street. She saw cars filing past, their bumpers end-to-end. She heard the impatient honk of horns and wondered how she could quickly cross the busy road before someone took off with her bag. But the traffic seemed impenetrable, and she decided to run to the intersection at the end of the block.
Eliminating the bolded words removes the filters that distances us, the readers, from this character’s experience:
Sarah’s stomach sank. Her purse—she’d forgotten it back at the cafe across the street. Cars filed past, their bumpers end-to-end. Horns honked impatiently. Could she make it across the road before someone took off with her bag? She ran past the impenetrable stream of traffic, toward the intersection at the end of the block.
Are Filter Words Ever Acceptable?
Of course, there are usually exceptions to every rule.
Just because filter words tend to be weak doesn’t mean they never have a place in our writing. Sometimes they are helpful and even necessary.
Susan Dennard of Let The Words Flow writes that we should use filter words when they are critical to the meaning of the sentence.
If there’s no better way to phrase something than to use a filter word, then it’s probably okay to do so.

How it feels to be stabbed
Tumblr media
Getting stabbed is an experience that no one in their right mind would want to have. But, what if you do get stabbed? What would that feel like?
It usually feels like you’re being punched.
The description of being punched really hard comes up a lot when people describe the experience. One woman said she didn’t even realize she was being stabbed, she just thought her attacker was punching her as hard as he could. Many people don’t feel the actual puncturing, just the force of the knife hitting them.
You might feel nothing at all.
This wasn’t as common as the feeling of being hit, but some people said they literally felt nothing. One person said they felt nothing, but their brain started racing and their fight or flight kicked in. Another didn’t realize someone stabbed them until they saw that they were bleeding profusely.
Occasionally, it feels like you got shocked.
A few stab wound survivors described it as a very quick, but powerful, electric shock. One person described it as static electricity, while another said it was like lightening hitting them. The pain of the initial shock goes away as quickly as it occurred.
Eventually, over time,  it’s probably going to hurt.
Of course the location of the stab wound effects how much it would hurt. Getting stabbed in the arm isn’t going to hurt as badly as a stab that punctured a lung. But after a while, you will most likely feel some pain. If the person wiggles the knife while it’s still in you, the pain may be more intense.
