Little Miss Sunshine (2006) dir.  Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris
5/5.
Little Miss Sunshine is everything that I want in a film. Amazing visuals, characters that I can relate to, and that warm, unexplainable, melancholic feel.
 Oh, and Steve Carell.
The colour grading in this film is truly great, every scene is filled with blues and yellows that complement each other perfectly as it shows all the happiness and sadness in every shot which is what this whole film is about. The soundtrack matches it so well and grabs you into the world of Little Miss Sunshine even more.
“Everybody pretend to be normal.”
The Hoovers are one of those families that want to be normal so bad but that’s just not who they are. Each and everyone of these characters are full of story and leaves you wanting to know more.  There’s moments all throughout the film where you get to immerse yourself in what each person is feeling through the excellent use of close-ups. These characters are complex all the while being relatable. I, for one, would be interested in seeing some kind of backstory of the Hoovers to indulge in.
The dialogue given in this film is enough to make me feel sad every time i hear it. This star-studded cast truly delivers amazing performances. The introductions to these characters will never fail to surprise me. From Olive, to Dwayne, to Richard, to Frank, to Sheryl and Grandpa Edwin, all of these characters are very much so different from each other but all have little things in common. That being that they live together, they’re all related, and that they all want happiness. We all want happiness. This has and always will be the driving force in being a human being, as we’ve been told since we were little. They all want happiness. Through Dwayne being a pilot, Olive winning Little Miss Sunshine, to Richard wanting a book deal, Frank being happily in love, Sheryl wanting a ‘normal’ family, and to Grandpa Edwin being young and carefree again. The melancholic undertones in this film and the difference of each character is the main drive of this film and what made me fall completely with it the first time I watched it.
Steve Carell’s character, Frank, is one of my all time favourite characters to ever exist. I’m glad they didn’t use his sexuality as some form of joke which is nice to see for a change. It is always amazing to see Carell do more than comedy as he can clearly play such a diverse range of characters which is always a nice change from seeing him as Michael Scott.
The whole plot and pretty much everything about this movie is perfect to me, and very original. Thank you, Dayton and Faris, and here’s to the family on the verge of a breakdown.

Sometimes I’ll start a sentence and I don’t even know where it’s going. I just hope I find it along the way.

According to Edgar Wright, the flavour of the cornettos featured in the unofficial ‘Three Flavours Cornetto’ trilogy represents the motif of that film. The red or strawberry flavour in Shaun of the Dead represents blood and zombies, while the blue/original flavour of Hot Fuzz represents the police force. The green/peppermint of The World’s End represents science fiction and extraterrestrial elements.
