You know, i imagine why the population of New York in superhero universes never seems to dwindle due to the horrifying amount of mass murder schemes and world-ending threats is that rent and housing has to be - at this point - dirt fuckin cheap, right? like people just immediately start moving back there because fuck it, New York might get blowed the fuck up every now and then, but at least it keeps the property values down.
fuckin tweets like "oh sick some weirdo just zapped like half of a city block with a monkey laser and blew up the entire sewer system of manhattan im boutta pay that 1980s rent hell yeah i love this shit"

In a normal circumstance, I hate Netflix. However, they struck a deal to produce new episodes of Sesame Street and will ensure that the episodes remain free and accessible on PBS for all kids and for that, they deserve gratitude.
Additionally, unlike the deal previous struck with HBO, this one with Netflix also makes its so new episodes are simultaneously available via Netflix, PBS, and the PBS Kids app.
Please continue to support Sesame Street and all the other PBS programming via donations to ensure everyone, kids and adults alike, continue to have access to educational viewing.

not to sound like a weak, morally impure centrist over here, but i think online leftist communities need to be a little more accepting of the concept that most people are just. not that well informed. we live in a society that provides access to an overwhelming amount of information and yet which discourages actually diving into much beyond the surface level. Most of the people you meet out in the world are just not gonna know much about a lot of what you care about, but that's not the same as being against those things, or being unwilling to learn, or being unnamenable to those ideas. Our modern society is an unending cascade of information and misinformation and disinformation and filtering through that shit enough to actually have a solid grasp of a subject, let alone a nuanced antiestablishment political take, is a skill that takes time and effort to develop, time and effort that is in very short supply. It really bothers me when I see leftists talk about how capitalism keeps us down by taking up all our time and energy and making recovery, both physical and emotional, cost what little we can afford, and then turn around and get upset that people are politically uninformed. On some level, you gotta meet some people where they are, and have a little faith in them to be open to new ideas and information. Ignorance is not inherently intentional, and it's not the same as antipathy.

Making a post about this since several people seem to be confused or unaware of how bad what tumblr did to John Green was; he has OCD and this website gleefully harassed him with accusations of pedophilia because Hazel and Augustus have non-explicit sex in The Fault In Our Stars until he had a mental health breakdown and left Tumblr. The cock monolog was NOT a one off event he overreacted to(though I would argue it's homophobic as the entire joke was "man likes penis" like how tf else are we supposed to interpret that) it was part of a targeted, abelist harassment campaign against a mentally ill author who simply committed the crime of being too popular and writing teenagers accurately.
Like...not to get too heavy but being a pedophile is the most common intrusive fear OCD causes, I should know, I have it and those intrusive fears(not using intrusive thoughts becauss that term has been ruined and imo doesn't convey what's actually going on, they aren't thoughts they're obsessive phobias with no basis in reality) are the worst ones. Makes me break out into a cold sweat and feel like I'm going to cry and vomit at the same time. Sometimes makes me scared to even be around kids even though I know I am not going to harm them because OCD fears are not usually about things you're actually at risk of doing, just things you're terrified of doing accidentally somehow. So harassing someone who has been very open about his OCD like that specifically with unfounded and untrue accusations of csa is an ableist hate crime as far as I'm concerned. Every single person who took part in that should be fucking ashamed and I assume they are given that all most people remember is the fucking cock post. Ofc it gets boiled down to that, to hide what people were actually saying and how bad it was. It's just a guy overreacting to a silly post about sucking dick, nevermind that he's a YA author with a debilitating mental illness, nah. He's just being a wet blanket.
I won't say the Green Brothers are perfect they've both dropped the ball imo on a few occasions, but that's normal for huge public figures and does not justify what happened. No one should ever take pride in that moment, nor should they behave as though it was just one stupid post, and if you didn't know what actually happened that's because people act like it was just a stupid post, but it wasn't. It was so much more than that.

look I'm a disability studies scholar so I know why people are like this. but. people really do get so pressed about the dumbest shit. why do you care if someone has multiple people in their head? why do you care if someone is existing with a mobility aid in your line of sight? why do you care if someone takes a couple extra seconds to formulate a sentence? even if you don't believe that someone is legitimately disabled (which is bad on its own. but still). what do you lose by just taking people at face value? and what do you gain by living life as an angry little ass all the time?

advice i think we should tell children is that when adults say stuff like ‘now that i’m an adult i get really excited about stuff like coffee tables and bathrooms and rugs etc’ they don’t mean ‘and now i don’t care about blorbo and squimbus from my childhood tv shows anymore’ bc your average adult still loves all the same pop culture stuff they always did; they just have a greater appreciation for the mundane as well. growing up just means you can enjoy life twice as much now. you can get really excited about a new stuffed animal AND about a new kitchen sponge. peace and love

the classic Finnish mix of extreme dutifulness and “we will make actual conversation after a silent interaction trial period of 6 weeks, thank you” can be really funny sometimes. told my coworker that I’d like to save the coffee grounds the workplace generated and take them home “for my mushrooms and worms” and she was just like “okei” and dutifully saved every single grounds-filled filter for weeks and weeks. about five weeks into this whole thing, after I thank her for the coffee grounds and tell her my worms must love them because they’re breeding very enthusiastically, she finally asks “so your worms… do they have a purpose or are they just… worms”. like sure I’ll save you all these coffee grounds every single time I drink coffee, 3+ times a day, but god forbid I inquire about your specific worm habits before propriety allows it. you could be eating them for breakfast for all I know but that’s your business

Mob Psycho 100 Volume 2
plot summary and review under the cut:
plot summary: Mob continues his quest to change his life, now accompanied by the ghost Dimple, who he defeated when Dimple tried to raise a cult to take over the world. Mob has joined the Body Building Club, which quickly gets pulled in to a scheme to defeat a gang belonging to a rival middle school. when the gang turns out to be led by another superhuman, Mob finds himself pulled into a battle he doesn't want.
review: i liked this one more than the first volume. it was genuinely funny at some points (i really loved the little stat blocks for the members of the body building club). i also liked getting a little bit more into mob's backstory, and Reigen continuing to Reigen (he appears to be in hardcore denial of his being a scam artist, or something?). the relationship between him and mob was surprisingly lovely.
i continue to not like the art, and i did not like Dimple. the battle got tedious fast for me, but that's fully a me thing, as i tend to find most battles get tedious very quickly.

Mob Psycho 100 vol. 1
plot summary + review under the cut
plot summary: If you're haunted by a ghost, or suffering from a curse, Reigen is your man to call. A psychic, accompanied by his sidekick, middle schooler Shigeo, Reigen will take on any ghost, no matter how terrifying, in order to help his clients (for a fee, of course).
is also a scam artist who possesses 0 psychic ability.
... Shigeo, however, does. He possesses quite a lot of it, actually.
Not that anyone really notices. Shigeo's nickname, Mob, refers to his overwhelming ability to blend into the background ("Just another face in the mob"). Can Shigeo ever come into his own?
review: this was mostly fun. some of it reminded me of my own middle school days, like the trials of telepathy club (fun fact, when i was that age i started a book club at my school. on the second meeting, the teacher we had to have supervise us forgot about us, and we met in the hallway). the feeling of everyone else having their live together and you're the only idiot bumming around playing video games is one that starts as a teenager, but does not go away.
Reigen is a fun character. Mob is... Mob, but he's sweet.
the whole cult subplot didn't really work for me; i found it kind of boring. my biggest problem, though, was the art. it is, to be blunt, not good. it's just not. that was disappointing, especially since i read this because my friend loves the anime, and tells me all the time how amazing the animation is.

Worthy of Love
plot review and summary under the cut
content warning: this book (and therefore this review) contains discussion of eating disorders/unhealthy body imagery. the discussion in the review is non-graphic.
plot summary: Adrian carter is a mixed-raced (Black and white) teenager from Halifax, Nova Scotia. he's quite overweight, and is bullied terribly at school, leading to a very low self-esteem. he decides to try and change his life, leading him to join kickboxing, and meet an amazing girl named mel.
but Adrian's demons aren't so easily defeated. as his attempts to lose weight spiral out of control, he starts to hurt the people he loves. is there are way for Adrian to put this cycle to rest?
review:
the good: Adrian is a good protag. his self-hatred feels very real, and i liked the parts where he was attempting to talk to Mel, and was just bad at it, because that's human! i believe this is a hi-lo book, but there were some moments with really lovely imagery.
the neutral: mel. she gave me some manic pixie dream girl vibes for a bit, but that winds up subverted in the end, making a lot more rounded. unfortunately, she's pretty tied into the thing i liked least about this book.
the bad: the handling of Adrian's bulimia was not always great. it's very graphic and there is extensive discussion of Adrian's weight in specific numbers, both of which are completely fine, but i really would have liked a heads-up. as someone who also struggles with her weight due to medical reasons, sometimes it got pretty rough.
the very bad (SPOILERS): Scarlett. Scarlett is an older girl who goes to Adrian's kickboxing place, and she quickly becomes a mentor to him. when Mel also joins the gym, Adrian has a moment of bad jealousy, which she calls him out on, it's very tough but ultimately fair. later, Mel and Adrian have a very big fight over Adrian's bulimia, and he lashes out and says some very hurtful things to her. it's not good, but it is understandable. He later tells Scarlett about it, a conversation which is explicitly the first time he ever tells her he's struggling with an eating disorder.
Scarlett gets mad at him for being mean to Mel. That's it. There's absolutely no concern for Adrian himself, who is, again, struggling with an eating disorder. It's all about Mel, and how he hurt her feelings. At one point, he brings up that Mel had previously done something also bad that hurt Adrian quite badly, and Scarlett just... continues to get mad at him for being mean to Mel.
and then that's just... kind of how it goes. Adrian spends a good three pages grovelling for Mel's forgiveness. Mel's pain is framed as a good reason for why she treats Adrian badly, but Adrian's pain is never framed as anything other than a fault. to be clear, I think it's good that this book took the stance of "your own pain is not an excuse to hurt others", because i think that's a good message, but in practice, it seemed really uneven and therefore unfair.
it's not a bad book, i just wish it had been better.
