Setting up your .gitignore for Ren'Py games version controlled by Git
Version control is great. If you're not using it already for any gamedev adventures, you should really consider doing it.
Git is the one I see used more often (in conjunction with such distributed versioning services like GitHub or GitLab) and for a good reason - it's the industry standard in pretty much any programming job I've done, there are plenty of tools to make its usage more simple (though I always recommend starting from the command line first, but that's a story for another day) and the aforementioned services are free to use for private projects.
However, if you were to just version-control all of your project with compiled scripts and all and you're not the only one committing stuff, you will soon encounter the dreaded merge conflicts - Git can't really track binary files (compiled scripts are usually this) well and if two people are touching the same file - Boom! Some shenanigans and headaches are bound to occur.
Enter the .gitignore file. It lives in your project root directory (the one you set up git tracking for) and shows you which files not to track with version control.
This is the one I use, but other people have also shared theirs.

could i ask you how you edited the quick save menu to be images above the text box??
I've been meaning to make a simple Ren'Py GUI for download, so why not document the whole process?
I'm starting off with a new Ren'Py project with white/green GUI and 1920x1080 screen size.
First of all, we need at least idle and hover icons that we will use in our quickmenu. I created these and so that they're organized, I put them under /gui/quick_menu folder:

Next we need Ren'Py to use them. For that we find the following lines in screens.rpy:

And change all the textbuttons to imagebuttons, using our newly created icons (your URLs might be different based on where you put your icons or how you named them):

If your GUI shouldn't include a certain icon, you can remove it.

This is how it looks with just the textbuttons replaced (the quicksave is being hovered).
They're a bit too close together for my liking, so I decided to add some padding, by adding a style that will apply to these buttons:

I'll probably be leaving the icons down in the bottom for the textbox I have in mind, but just as an exercise, let's move them to the top of the current textbox.
For that I changed the xalign and yalign of the textmenu to absolute xpos and ypos values. These will be different based on how your textbox is positioned, but I found these values worked well for the default one:

A thing that bothers me about wizard schools in popular media – outside of the magic-grade-school stuff, anyway – is that they're typically depicted as being basically magic universities, but their actual curricula and pedagogical approaches look much more like those of a technical institution. Like, buddy, that's not a wizard university, that's a wizard trade school. You can't just slap university student culture on top of trade school pedagogy. It doesn't work like that – the one emerges from the other!
