Getting started with synth DIY #1

This is the beginning of a series of posts in which my focus is on where to start as a newbie in the world of DIY synthesizers. The reason for this is that I've often thought to myself "If just I'd known about this site before", "this would have made it possible for me to have a working synth much faster" etc. Anyways: Nicolas Collins - Handmade electronic music The God of circuit bending and hardware hacking - and his book the Bible. Collins take you all the way from essential skills such as soldering, onwards to circuit bending, hardware hacking and building simple circuits: tone generators, amplifiers, sequencers etc. While the focus isn't on Synth DIY as such it still makes the perfect place to start - especially for someone completely new to the world of electronics. Music from outer space - a great place to get started and a lot of useful information. With a focus on how things work and also a great introduction to the theory of electronics. From absolute beginner projects and all the way to advanced synth modules and complete synthesizers. Did I mention the Weird Sound Generator (WSG)? An awesome noisemaker - and not least a great starting place! Nicolas Woollaston This guy deserves a lot more attention in the world of synth DIY aimed at beginners. He has made a series of simple, yet very powerful modules which will help you get your DIY synth going in (almost) no time. ;-) Especially his ADSR, simple VCA and very simple tone generators have impressed me - I like his approach of using linear ICs (opamps, transistors) opposed to using CMOS logic such as the 555 (APC), CD40106 (WSG, etc, etc). Each project comes with a strip board layout to guide you from schematic to finished module. In addition I like the idea of building modules from day 1 - modules that you can later on use together with more advanced modules.

A small Serge format modular synthesizer, modules in this box left to right: Serge/CGS sequencer/programmer, Serge/ CGS DUSG, Barton switched resistor VCF, fv-1 multi effects/ dsp, 4x4 matrix mixer. The fv-1 module is not working atm, think it got fried by too hot signals...
