first lines
tagged by : @birdiedoessw thank you birdie <3 tagging: frankly i don't remember which of my moots actually writes so please, if you see this, consider yourself tagged. rules : share the first lines of ten of your most recent fics (or whatever you got going on) and tag however many writers you want. if you've written fewer than ten, share anyway :))
sharing four wips because i don't want to unarchive too many wips. trying to be more realistic about what i will write lol.
[SPN: in my head there's no bloodstain] It’s stupid, of course, but Sam’s not thinking straight when he’s wasted in a dorm room he doesn’t know, and it's past three a.m.
[SPN: ice ice baby] Dean’s more than a little high tonight, and he’s set on getting cross-faded and jerking off to the magazine he stole earlier in the week until he passes out.
[SPN: tfem sam] She wants to do it right.
[SWTCW: surfer kix] He tastes the flaky fish and it is a burst of overwhelming texture and flavor on his tongue, and his stomach turns over the way it does on an unexpected zero-G dive.

headcanon: spare parts is basically the idea that clones are used to swapping out body parts like machine parts
i have a few fics that touch on this on my ao3.
spare parts hc hitting me full force tonight:
cody hugging his brother rex and this time he is missing that scar on his shoulder that he got early in the war. looking into rex's eyes and they're clearer than when he was a shiny but still heavy with all the violent things he has witnessed. cody tattooing his face with his training accident scar because he doesn't want to forget the batchmates he lost. rex bleaching his new hair back to its original blond even though this body doesn't naturally grow like that. small acts of defiance to hold onto their identity.

snippet from my kix wip
"Where were you?" Coric asks, offhandedly.
Kix hesitates. "'Freshers," he finally says, deciding honesty or at least partial honesty is better than a lie. "Wasn't feeling the best. That shuttle ride did me in."
Coric looks at him from the corner of his eye, a small moment of worry that raises Kix's hackles.
Although Coric goes back to scrolling his datapad, Kix steels himself for whatever Coric might say. He knows that slightly-irritated radiating concern that medics are not good at hiding.
"You've ridden through worse," Coric says.
There it is.
"I'm fine," Kix says, keeping his voice as neutral as possible.
Much to his relief, Coric shrugs it off, but Kix knows this won't be the end of it. He can play this game better than anyone, but Coric knows that. And Kix is keeping an eye on him, too. Coric hasn't slept well once since Kix has been assigned with him, and there's a lethargy to him that is abnormal. Rex mentioned something about a disastrous event Coric went through concerning the end of the war, but everyone experienced tragedy and loss on unimaginable scales with Order 66.
Kix won't ask. He hopes Coric won't either.

For the the writing game, how about Rex, 92?
Hope you’re doing well!
At headquarters, which is just the living room of Rex's pre-fab tiny house on the edge of Saleucami farmland, Lawquane's civvie volunteer friend blurts out a question in the middle of morning rush.
"Do you want a moment to rest?"
The question catches Rex so offguard he doesn't know what to say. One moment, his head is wrapped up in logsitics, numbers, relocation routes, accommodations, who he needs to call next, who he needs to pay, how much money he needs, et cetera. Rex hasn't had a moment for himself since the war abruptly ended, and he threw himself into the rehabilitation program for the Spaarti clones that osik'la Palpatine had commissioned. Those poor kids were sitting around in vats waiting for their time to hold their weapons and shoot. There wasn't much going up there, because they weren't made to think critically, but they were vod'e. At the very least, he could help a brother.
So no, he doesn't want a moment to rest. He can't, anyway.
Not that he knows what rest means, anyway.
Rex settles with an: "I'm fine," and reassures the volunteer with a pat to the shoulder. "Get to docking bay seventy-four and help Royal Squad unload the new arrivals and get them on their way to their host's place. You know what to do."
He minimizes a datapad window then slips the device in his cargo shorts pockets. He follows the volunteer out the door as he punches in the comm code for Vaughn's unit on the other side, coordinating passage from Centax-IV. There's so much to do. He doesn't have time to think about anything else, and frankly, he likes it that way.

thinking about how before Kix can even make it to Amarina (the beach town on an Iloh coast that Surfer Kix takes place in) he's getting himself dirty to help someone else. he's supposed to be on a sabbatical of sorts and on day 0 he's covered in blood helping someone he's never met before.

ugh having Mirjahaal AU clone trooper feels... particularly mid-war abused and self-hating fox being groomed by palpatine for ruthlessness, post-war spiraling depressed loss-of-direction cody, also guilty wolffe dealing with the aftermath of plo's death through exploring religion, and so much more... there's a reason why they're my first and longest fandom.

I have to rec Bal kote, darasuum kote by independent_variables. It's what inspired me in the first place to write my system of equations series about the strained relationship between clones and Jedi (particularly Cody & Obi-Wan).
tags for this fic:
Tumblr media
I already wrote a similar posts on how fics of this nature annoy me, but I would like to push it further by saying that while I am fine reading it, I feel kind of weird about fics where the clones like Cody are constantly taking care of and basically babysitting their Jedi General or acting as a major emotional pillar for them.
I think the reason it makes me so uncomfortable is that not only are the clones already going through their own extremely horrific shit, but the Jedi are their superior officers and have a lot more systemic power over them. I will never stop saying that the clones are slaves, and while I don't see the Jedi as being their enslavers, I do think that they are essentially in a "master" position of power whether they like it or not. So it feels weird when the Jedi are more dependent on the clones and the clones need to basically take care of them and are always needing to look after them.
I'm a half-black American who is very passionate about African American history and anti-black systemic issues. And I can't help but be reminded of the tropes involving black characters whose are constantly forced into what is basically a caretaker role for white characters. Think of the Mammy, or the Black Best Friend, or the Magical Negro. The clones are already oppressed, already marginalized, and already forced to constantly back up and support the Jedi in charge of them. And then they are forced to be their Jedi's babysitter on top of all that.
Helping their Jedi out and generally caring about their wellbeing on places like the battlefield? Yes, that can be very sweet and often involves a lot of emotional care and trust.
Needing to force their Jedi to take care of themselves even off the battlefield and having a whole system/thing about how the Jedi "never take care of themselves and simply need the clones in order to do basic self care and not overwork themselves all the time while being oh so self-sacrificial"? Slightly weird and honestly seems to be the other way around based on both canon scenes and their respective circumstances.
I feel like perhaps part of this is just a general desire for angst and classic whump tropes, and sometimes it seems to be used as a way to showcase, "see! The Jedi do care about their troopers!" It seems like an example of the Jedi taking on the caretaker position and being the ones to protect the clones. But it almost always ends up resulting in the clones being forced into a support/caretaker role even when it seems like the Jedi is playing the role of caretaker.
Now, I don't think fics that follow this overall concept are super problematic or whatever. I also think some dynamics like this can work, such as with the Padawans and the clones (though that is for very specific reasons). I really don't want to spread too much negativity or say that anyone who writes this stuff is automatically racist or whatever. It's more of a personal discomfort/distaste than anything and people can write whatever they want, especially since I know the intent behind these tropes are often sweet in nature.
But I do think it's good for us to reflect on the parallels the clones have to real life issues and the way certain harmful tropes and mindsets can be perpetuated through metaphorical allegories (whether intentional or unintentional), and discuss the way we as a fandom treat the power dynamics between the clones and Jedi, especially in regards to things like shipping.
I don't know if I'm making any sense, but please tell me what you think, especially since I think it would be a good thing to talk about.
