My favorite thing to say is “any idiot can learn chemistry, it’s trades that take actual skill” which is both factually correct and makes a lot of people angry

First post of the new semester from Violet!!! Since Eddie is now a big boy and graduated, idk how often he’ll be posting but I definitely will! Today is a papers review day — I have two more to look at — but then I think it should be pretty chill! I’m also taking an art class as one of my electives, so I’m excited to work on that as well!
Maybe I’ll even continue the 100 days of productivity that we started (ie abandoned) last semester!

Creative Writing for Self-Studiers January - July 2023
I designed a little creative writing course for me and @electrocuting-chemicals. It can be done individually, or in pairs/groups.
You will need to set aside between 30 minutes and 2 hours a week to complete the course exactly as scheduled, but there is flexibility, to both speed up and slow down, based on your other commitments and needs.
Through a combination of lectures (free from Coursera), reading assignments, and writing exercises, the hope is that at the end of the course, students will have a better understanding of the craft of creative writing. Students are also encouraged to work on and complete two short stories during the course, which spans approximately 27 weeks.
Check out the syllabus in the notes!

[image id: a man sitting cross-legged on the edge of a bed, reading. the text reads “new year, new read; 24 hour readathon; january 28-29, 2026]
24-Hᴏᴜʀ Rᴇᴀᴅᴀᴛʜᴏɴ Cʜᴀʟʟᴇɴɢᴇ
Join me for a 24-hour readathon on January 28, 2023. This challenge is meant to take away your other excuses and distractions, and help you get reading this year if you, like me, have been having trouble getting to your reading goals. The challenge is meant to be as intense or relaxed as you want it to be—while this is likely to be difficult, it is not meant to be torturous; to the extent that this is not helpful to you and your goals, you can and should stop!
guidelines
for 24 hours your main activity will be reading, so that means no doom-scrolling, no tumblr (except to track and share your reading progress!), no wikipedia rabbit holes that make you feel like you just woke up from a nap and have no idea when and where you are when you surface, no video games, no youtube or tv, or any other activity that you find yourself picking up instead of reading during your down time
do eat, hydrate, sleep or nap, and take care of any other activities that are necessary for your well-being. feel free to change locations, such as heading to the library or a coffee shop.
you can and should put down any book that isn’t working for you and switch to something else
and remember, if you don’t feel well, don’t force yourself to keep going. your well-being, physical and emotional, are more important than any amount of reading you might otherwise complete.
timing
date: january 28-29, 2023 time: 10 am - 10 am est, or anytime that works for you!

8/100 days of productivity
Eddie here - my term seems to just be flying past (quite literally as I was on a plane last week to go do a job interview in the city I plan to be moving to).
This is some of my group design project work - I’m currently working on reverse engineering an implementation of a quantum encryption to an embedded code repository so that we can run it on a lightweight device and measure it’s performance. It’s challenging work, but rewarding in itself.
In good news, after the interview, I have been offered a job for my first year out of uni (!!!!) so it appears my adult life is finally beginning to fall into place...? who am I kidding I’m never gonna have things together

7/100 days of productivity
Eddie here - finally starting my new semester properly! Today was a good bit of reviewing my first few lectures on my new module Secure Hardware. It’s a fair bit of recap, but of things I’ve not done for a while so I appreciated going over it. Violet and I did a bit of studying together this evening (#tedlet study vibes) which was a lot more productive than we can sometimes be!
