Did the lettering on my officemate's wedding masks using acrylics 👩‍🎨❤ ❌ No running portfolio on brush lettering/ calligraphy (Practiced thru watercolor and my draft was accepted 🥰) ❌ Zero experience in painting on cloth (I even thought the painting will be a flop because the mask material is not that absorbent) ❌ Zero experience in acrylics (Grateful I had my watercoloring brushes tho!) And yet, this! When everything goes too overwhelming and beyond my control, I will choose to cast my anxieties and rest my heart unto the Lord. For He says: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." - Revelations 22:13 I've been both hesitant and excited to start this piece for a long time now because it involves watercolor: the medium I'm not so confident with. I could've chosen other medium but apparently the seeming challenge is what entices me. I decided to take on rendering this piece a couple of days ago when I felt my heart's just too heavy, that even my nightly devotions and journal writing won't help me get the heavy lump out of my chest. 10min of watching a random tutorial (so I could feel more confident knowing what to do) and I'm off on my own and already into it. Being engrossed in the colors, mixing them, applying more water, spreading it freely on to the page.. Watching how the colors move with water and how it is absorbed by the paper is what (I think) keeps me fixated with this medium. Haha As I watch it move freely and come up with an effect, I felt like the tangled threads of my heart just went along with it. ❤😌 30min on the work and I felt I've overdone my work. Hahaha Also replotted the letters as it was buried deep in the hues. Used the cutesy sparkly pens I received from my friend as a birthday gift to outline them letters and mimic formed constellations 💫 And.. I initially didn't like applying a certain design but so happy how it turned out! It's more lovely and dreamy 🥰❤ The bigger silvers, whites, and the gold specks just adds detail and beauty ❤🌌🌠 Didn't intend to make it look Star Wars-y but, definitely better than what I first conceived Hihi ❤ (even without having magic tapes on the paper sides for cleaner borders 😅) ⬅️ Swipe left for blow up details. Stuff I Stole from Austin Kleon

I have my Steal Like an Artist book for quite sometime now, bought it during some random time a couple of years back, but I thought of making a blog post about it discussing its awesome content.

"The 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative" - this stuff can easily be Googled so I will have to veer away from that type. Instead, I would like tell the main things I loved about it, the concepts Iearned, things I am reminded about - just plain takeaways in my own words. A review apart from the usuals.

Without further adue, here's some Austin Kleon stolen stuff.

1. Collect, collect, collect. Collect what inspires you. Cut it and paste it on your notebook. Take a picture of it. Write the poetry lines down. This encouraged me to stay curious and just keep going, keeping every single thing that inspires me captured. I only previously did these on my favorite songs: keeping a list based on my mood, events, activities, etc. It's time to get my other notebooks useful and serve as storage of my every thought and inspiration.

2. Know your idols and learn how they think. I like how the word copying is repeatedly mentioned and given better context in this book and compared against plagiarizing. Every artist (and aspiring ones) strive for originality, but in reality, is anyone ever original? Instead of copying (an exact content, style, manner) per se, copy the way they think. The way they are inspired by something. The way they interpret something. Get through how they came up with their craft. Also, keep inspired by looking out for their own set of idols as well!

3. Don't throw any of yourself away. I love how this thought is put together that's why I'm directly quoting the book. Just like Austin, I have multiple interests outside my one area of pursuit and I also tried to mute it, and eventually fail. As the nudging, the "phantom limb" just gets louder and more painful. I am encouraged to keep my various passions and keep creating, keep playing music, keep writing, keep inspired and all other things. Just keep at things and it will help my craft, aside from all my other crafts, to be flowing.

4. Analog is the way to go. I so deeply relate with this. How I still prefer my notebook and pen duo. I, too, believe that the digital age gives us the perfection streak, since the backspace button is just a finger/ click away. But to think better and generate more and profound ideas, I am reminded to work with my hands and think. Write. Doodle. Cut. Paste things together. Ideas are better formed when my hands are working. Computers, tablets, and all other gadgets: they will have to take care of the polishing.

And aside from thinking with the hands, keeping an analog log of things that I do, movies I watched, food I've eaten, and a calendar to track my work per day, will keep me on track with things and appreciate the details in the every day. Log, log, log.

5. Choose your relationships. Ultimately important to select the people you surround yourself with. I get how this chapter/ thought was never expounded. It's the shortest, it's just a page! It's so crucial that it's just that. Just imagine yourself having a long term vision with your craft, and you're surrounded by anti-folks. Let's see where you headed years down. You get the drill. No need to further guess.

6. Keep the good words. To keep motivated when things get rough, a positive email or message from a fan, a friend, a supporter, will get you a long way. Yes, we cannot depend on external forces to validate our craft and our own selves, but it's better to have something on hand in case of emergency such as being stuck in a rut or loss of inspiration and drive. Better to collect the positive ones than to let the negative ones (which are prevalent in reasons no one knows) ruminate in one's head.

These are my own words as takeaways from the book. I highly recommend having your own copy to learn more about the cool concepts that Austin Kleon has written.

A friend's sibling has a budding online business, with their social media site already up. However, the client wants a more distinct logo: one that could speak about their delicious food products: baked goods and milk & tapioca 💖 My take on J&G's Delights is quite simple and direct: To add elements of a good cook/ baker (which happens to be the owner of the business, yes!) through associated graphics such as the chef hat and the rolling pin, and of course: the play of colour 👩‍🎨🥰💖 Analogous hues in vintage were applied so as to give life to the logo and still maintain that beige and browns homey, baked food feels. Carry You

A few moments while I wait out for the Youtube release of Novo Amor’s newest single, Opaline, I turned to listen to Novo songs I first liked, and one of them was Carry You. 

It is only that moment that I noticed one of the top comments, which I didn’t pay much attention before despite having the music video being repeated over and over in my Youtube playlist. ‘Cause why, Novo Amor music! 

I was so moved I felt compelled to actually write a short post about it, which is exactly what I am doing right now.

I am usually a fan of artists who has this distinct, varying voice ranges and pro skilled with musical instruments. Quite picky, but I am one of those who also appreciate the mainstream, the pop, the upbeat, the music that probably a lot of people like, or at the very least, familiar.

Not with Novo Amor. 

I was then trying to recover from a break-up. It is when I let my Youtube autoplay that I discovered his music. I just let the song play, Carry You, my first favorite, and I just remember being very into it and finding myself reading a blog post about the song and its lyrics.

Since then, Novo Amor’s music give me a soothing experience into my core. His detailed guitar/ piano intros coupled with fluid violin seem to gently invite me into his song. In the middle of his music travels me through different depths of my feelings, making me unsure if it’s sadness or peace or deep joy. Then there’s the climax, enjoining all the instruments which drives me in highs. Followed by the element of dim, and soft build up of intruments that puts my soul gently back into the ground; ending with a complete halt. An experience quite synonymous to waking up not too early, not too late, after a good dream, from a good night rest. 

In all his songs were poetry; with lovely and intense thoughts that leaves an etch in one’s heart. Listening to the song, this time knowing the song’s message/ concept, and my listening experience is elevated.

Novo Amor’s music has pierced me deep into my heart, into my soul.

And I think, for me to share Novo Amor to another being, feels like I’m stripping myself of all the earthly defenses I’ve built; barenaked. I’m sharing my soul. In all my bold highs, pinks and violets, and also in my pitch black and steep lows.

Which is why I feel with the comment.

Sharing something you feel so deeply and intricately to another human being, can be threatening. Can be hurtful. Can be soul-breaking.

And on the other hand can be extremely wonderful: being appreciated, understood, and met eye to eye. A pure union between souls.

So yes.

I look for, aspire, hope, and pray for that deep connection.

And soon, all the moons, stars, colours and galaxies that form in my soul whenever I listen to the guitar plucks, violin, and falsetto voice of Novo Amor will be freely revealed to someone.

Someone who can bear it. Who can appreciate. Understand. Take care of.

And who will gladly share theirs as well.

It's almost every builder's favorite daily scenery: a building's (they designed or are supervising) ongoing construction, with the lovely sunset hues as its background. 🏢🏗🌅 Being in the industry as an architect, experiencing this scenario every afternoon gives me a great sense of relief that after every day's hard work, amidst all the pressure, the dirt, the struggle --- the chaos, things will end beautifully. With God's love manifesting in the pinkish skies as if speaking to your soul: "You did great today, my child. That's enough for today's toil, for now you may take your rest." 🌇 And day after day, the structure progresses to be finished and completed. Make it Happen. This is a really strong statement, and is usually the flagship by dreamers believing that with their every shot, they can make their dreams come true. I also am a fan of it, in fact, it is my 2020 mantra.

On the flipside though, I realized over time that believing cannot make my dreams happen. Manifesting cannot make it happen. Hustling cannot make it happen. All those alone cannot make my dreams happen.

I realized that all these years I was just on the superficial side of feeling deserving of my dreams to happen.

I realized that, my dreams will happen only if I let things unfold.

Only if I let things happen.

Until I let myself.

Feel for the things that make my heart and soul full.

Go for the things I deeply want.

Put in the work day-in and day-out towards the life I always dreamed of.

I came to face that it's only me who's been the hindrance all along.

Only then can the universe conspire on everything I've always believed. Manifested. Hustled for.

Lastly, mantras are great for that pep talk to be given to oneself every moment for the rest of the year, but as I am in the midst of lettering this, I also realized that me alone cannot make anything come true. I need God. His Grace and His provision.

As in Isaiah 60:22, "When the time is right, I, the Lord, will make it happen."

I made sure it would be this statement to come first. It's a funny feeling when your year 2020 mantra and 5-year old ideas are aligning just right in time: to give way to dreams unfolding ❤🙏🌠 Better late than never! 🤸‍♀️
