as someone with a bachelor’s degree in english, i am inexpressibly tired of people telling me to get highly specific jobs that often require highly specific degrees. “just go write for a magazine!” you need a journalism degree for that. “just teach!” you need a teaching certificate, and also fuck you. “just go work at a tutoring place!” tutoring children with learning disabilities, which make up the majority of the clientele at those places, requires not only a teaching certificate but a specialized master’s degree. “just go work at a library!” you need a master’s degree in library science to be a librarian. it is actually a highly skilled and extremely competitive field. you don’t just “go work at a library,” you train for years in the vain hope that you will get one of handful of available jobs. “just go work at a library.” the nerve. the unmitigated gall. “just go work at a library.” ugh.

people always talk about leaving comments on ao3 like it's a nice thing to do, or the best way to encourage writers to keep writing, or overall like it's how you Do Your Part in fandom

and yeah, all those things are true, but having spent the past few months leaving enthusiastic comments on as many things as i can, i have a different perspective

you should leave comments on fics because it's fun

taking the time to stop and focus on what i like about a story has made me way more aware of what's going on in stories and what i like about them. there's bit more actual comprehension and appreciation and not just beaming content into my eyes to fill time

i like noticing cool little things in fics, or riffing on funny events. i've never been very good at speculating or picking apart characters, but sometimes something clicks and it rocks.

and of course it's pretty nice when you get a response and it's clear you've made another person happy

so yeah, you should leave comments for your own sake, too. it makes reading better!

ao3 emails are the best emails to receive bc it’s either a comment or kudos on my work, a comment in reply to something i said on someone else’s work, or a new chapter/fic from a writer i’m subscribed to. you can never go wrong with an ao3 email. bless.

I think it is important for me to ask you how have you ben doing. Fine, I like to think. Hope life has beeb kind to you. I must admit, this is very likely close to a farewell. This year, rough like the past two, gas surpassed the nightmare that was 2021. And, 2022, even if I like to think it had been good (actively ignoring the grief of losing my dad) if I am honest. This year might be the last.

I must tell you that if that is the case, I loved your work. It was so brutally tragic and beautiful. Hope time allows you to continue; and if not, please know that what you delivered was beautiful. Hope this message finds you well.

Hey this is an incredibly alarming and scary thing to recieve in my ask box and I don't know what's going on, but please ask for help from someone who actually knows you or is a professional in some way. I'm literally just a stranger with too many problems who copes with writing and art. And I know everything sucks but please know the pain that's lead you to send me this is not infinite... I'm reading about how Israel, in the immediate aftermath of the 1948 Nakba, deliberately replaced olive trees and other indigenous flora with European plants. This ecological disaster, which is now proudly hailed under the banner of 'making the desert bloom,' was done to 'de-Arabize' the landscape, and to cover up - often with fast-growing European pine trees -the ruins of Palestinian villages that were destroyed by Zionists forces.

And I just need everyone to read this passage from Pappé, because the symbolism of what happened to those European pine trees in the desert speaks for itself:
