Mend March 2024
Day 29: Practical – I chose to mend another pair of socks, but this time I used the traditional woven darning method, This year’s socks were less worn out than the pair I mended last year. Those socks needed a total re-knit to repair the holes. This year’s pair had smaller holes with some of the fabric netting still intact. On closer inspection they appear to be more of a rug like material:…

M6796
I’ve had this pattern for awhile. I’d wanted to make View C, which has the big fold over collar, but I didn’t have enough fabric. I used merino wool knit that I bought from Mood fabrics a few years back. Yes, it sat in my stash that long, because I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to make with it. I needed a new winter shirt, and I had no money because I was waiting on my disability claim for…

Toestep Tabis: Another Pair
As some of you know, I’m an aspiring pattern designer. My tabi socks pattern, the Toestep Tabis, is my most recently published design. And even though it was published back in 2022, I still continue to knit it! Doing so keeps me in touch with the pattern and allows me to tech edit if needed. I’ve updated it once since publishing; I do my best to fix errors quickly.  This time, I knit a pair for…

Project Bag for Knitting/Crocheting & Sewing/Mending
I’ve been working on a pair of my Toestep Tabis socks over the past month, and I like to move from one room to another sometimes while I work. I was using my knitting bowl, which is really beautiful, but I realized that hauling it around wasn’t a good idea. It’s built to sit in one place because it’s ceramic, and I didn’t want it to break. I needed something more portable that could sit on my arm…

The Hollyhock Shirt By Mood Fabrics
First published in 2019, this shirt pattern is one of Mood’s first patterns in their now large catalog of free sewing patterns available on their site. I wasn’t put off by the age of the pattern; I really loved the Peter Pan collar and the fact that it was designed for very thin slippery fabric, which is what I was looking to use up from my stash. The Fabric I Used The fabric I chose could…

In The Folds/Peppermint Magazine Wrap Top
This pattern is a collaboration between design house In The Folds and Peppermint Magazine. It’s a free download with the option to donate. It’s a casual wrap top with a crop length that ties in the front. I wanted to make something for the end of summer while at the same time using up some of my lightweight stash fabric. This pattern ticked both those boxes. Pattern Basics I was impressed with…

10 Years on WP
This July 2023 marks my 10th anniversary here on WordPress. I’ve been busy lately working on publishing my first sewing pattern, a dream I’ve had for a long time. I also realized that I’ve never shared a pic of my workspace in the entire 10 years I’ve been blogging, probably because when I first started out I used the living room. I have an actual dedicated workroom now, something I only dreamed…

From Fabric Scraps to Yarn, It's FARN (Fabric Yarn)
FARN: my own coined term for fabric yarn. I first wrote a post about it in the early days of my blog. I’m now back to making some, this time from a pile of knit fabric scraps that I sorted out a couple months ago. I went through my entire stash of knit scrap leftovers, and came up with 2 piles: what was usable for apparel making, and what wasn’t. The “what wasn’t” pile was set aside to be made…

Pattern Design: Basic Briefster
For some time now I’ve dreamed of publishing my own sewing patterns. I have a lot of sewing experience and many clothing design ideas. A few years ago I drafted an underwear block for the purpose of using up my knitwear scraps to sew my own. Since that time, I’ve thought about where to start as a pattern designer, that is, what kind of garment should I begin with? I decided to start with…

New Spins
I have a lot of sari silk, and I’ve been finding ways to put it to good use: mixing it with wool and alpaca. Its really cool material, it goes very far. It’s a recycled/upcycled product to begin with, and I’m still discovering how to work with it. My recent yarns are 2 very different approaches. The first is a single, worsted weight, composed of my home processed, hand dyed wool, carded up with…

Mend March: Sock Mending
Mending: what is it exactly? I used to think it was the process of closing up a torn seam, or adhering a fabric patch over a hole too large to close the seam on. Those definitions aren’t wrong, but the act of mending is more than just those. It also is the creation of patches by means of weaving or knitting. These patches bridge the gap caused by worn out fabric, and are made of threads or yarn…

Kwik Sew 3323
I bought this pattern back in 2015, when there was an online sale of OOP patterns from the “big 4”. It was vintage then, and even more so now. Kwik Sew patterns have been discontinued since 2021, so this pattern is officially collectable. I liked the idea of homemade slippers: a way to get creative with leftover fabric scraps and save money on not having to buy them from the store. The pattern…

Pattern Development: Undies
Underwear: most people buy it premade from stores, but as a creator of my own wardobe, I sew mine. I first began sewing my own underwear in 2018. I had spare fabric, elastic and the will to give it a try. That was all I needed to get started. That and a working pattern. I drafted my own, and I’ve used it to make several more pairs since then. During the time between then and now I’ve also been…

Enchanted Mesa Completed
Finally! I finished this sweater after working on it for the past several months. The spring was cold when I began knitting, I took a break over the summer, and then returned to it in November. I posted about learning the brioche stitch in order to knit the recommended finish of the design. And I’ll say it one last time: this pattern was the push I needed to teach myself brioche. I wouldn’t…

Sage's Quilt: New Colorway For 2022
Sage’s Quilt: New Colorway For 2022
This is the first actual dyed yarn to come from my home processed fleece. It’s been a long journey to get to this point, and I won’t go on about it, because I already have in previous posts. Today it’s about the finished product. When choosing a new colorway for this season, I looked to the past, specifically to a quilt that I completed back in 2019. It can be seen in this post, but I’m also…
