A little sneak peak at the sock I'm repairing.
I'll probably include the finished thing when I show all the socks I've mended for Solarpunk aesthetic week.

Today I spent some time mending socks - I did three pairs and it's definitely a worthwhile task, if a little monotonous. It's taking something useful and making it last, these socks could go in a landfill, but instead they go back on a foot for another round.

Another day, another pair of socks mended.
These are the first socks I ever knitted. In 2017. (or the first pair I got to keep, and wasn't for the store I worked at, to sell). They've held up excellently. These are the very first patches on them, and I've worn them a lot.

Mend March: Sock Mending
Mending: what is it exactly? I used to think it was the process of closing up a torn seam, or adhering a fabric patch over a hole too large to close the seam on.
Those definitions aren’t wrong, but the act of mending is more than just those. It also is the creation of patches by means of weaving or knitting. These patches bridge the gap caused by worn out fabric, and are made of threads or yarn…

Short post cause at somepoint I'm gonna do a post with just all the ones I've done.
Sock darning is so satisfying
Like I'm still not doing it the neatest but I don't really care, most people aren't gonna see them anyway, but I love patching my ace socks with green thread and my aro socks with purple thread.

I knit these socks May 2020, and today I discovered a hole. Luckily, it was the "single strand of yarn broke" kind of hole, not the "yarn is wearing thin all over the foot" kind of hole, so fixable.
I used a crochet hook (our local thrift store had a bunch of these very small steel crochet hooks for 50 cents each this summer) to pick up the dropped stitch. I happened to still have the skein I made the socks from, so I had a great match to duplicate stitch across the hole, tightening it back up and catching the loose ends.
Ends woven in and basically as good as new.
This sock pattern is Jaywalker, but in rib so the fit is more forgiving, and the yarn is On Your Toes 4ply with Aloe Vera

Mend March 2024
Day 29: Practical – I chose to mend another pair of socks, but this time I used the traditional woven darning method,
This year’s socks were less worn out than the pair I mended last year. Those socks needed a total re-knit to repair the holes. This year’s pair had smaller holes with some of the fabric netting still intact. On closer inspection they appear to be more of a rug like material:…
