The Hollyhock Shirt By Mood Fabrics
First published in 2019, this shirt pattern is one of Mood’s first patterns in their now large catalog of free sewing patterns available on their site. I wasn’t put off by the age of the pattern; I really loved the Peter Pan collar and the fact that it was designed for very thin slippery fabric, which is what I was looking to use up from my stash. The Fabric I Used The fabric I chose could…

Happy NYE/NY everyone!
Because 'tis the season for reflection, I went through my camera roll and picked out the 9 projects from this year that I'm proudest of.
(We all know what posts from this year got the most online attention, but I think it's important to be introspective and think about what projects and posts were actually most valuable to me. Anyways. /soapbox)
Swan Song Scarf (Jasmine Lin, Crafty Coola). This is my design, and although I released it a good while ago, I'm still incredibly proud of it. I spent a lot of time sketching, charting, knitting, ripping back... it was a labor of love, but I'm proud that I stuck with it and got a result I'm happy with. Yarn: Miss Babs Yummy 2-Ply (World in a Book and Light Clematis)
Woodland Cardigan (Anna Johanna, Where We Once Knitted). This was my first time steeking, and yeah, I'm pretty gosh-darned proud of that. Yarn: Knit Picks Palette (Wonderland Heather and Calypso Heather)
Anza Dress (Kennis Wong, Itch to Stitch). This was my first time installing buttons, making (sewn) buttonholes, using interfacing (...don't judge me), and sewing scoop pockets. So many new techniques for me, but it created such a polished product and was an excellent learning opportunity. I'm so glad I took the leap with this pattern. Fabric: Singer Brand Cotton Poplin (2 yards)
Color Triangle (p: do you love the color of the sky?). This was my first time using powdered acid dye (read: Big Girl Dye instead of tie-dye/Rit/food coloring)! Obviously the whole color-formulating process for the Color of the Sky shenanigans remains in progress, but I'm proud of this triangle as it is anyways. Fiber: Knit Picks Stroll Bare, Dye: G&S Acid Dyes
Custom Intarsia Blanket. This depicts DNA replication using restriction enzymes and DNA ligase. I did this one for a custom commission, and I'm proud of myself for a) designing it, b) being so free with it, and c) getting to make something science-y! I sketched a rough plan before beginning, but I had to make an absurd amount of adjustments along the way -- in the end, I even had to duplicate stitch over the restriction enzyme bit with a half-strand (i.e. half the plies) of yarn since the stash yarn was too fine. I'm so used to planning everything and then being stubborn; this was a great exercise in adaptability and letting go.
Elderberry Dress (Shavonne Cruz, Mood Sewciety). I'm not one to do muslins or even much fitting on my sewing projects. I tend to just take patterns straight out of the envelope and then sew them, consequences be damned. This dress, though? After each wear, I've been making little adjustments to improve it; shaping the neckline and adjusting the fit, amongst other things. That's something I want to carry forward for my future projects.
Eliane Scrubs (Jalie). These aren't anything particularly special from a technical perspective, but they are possibly my most-worn me-made EVER. They've held up to weekly wear and washing and I'm proud of them for that, as well as of myself for letting my babies "do their job" instead of hiding them way out of fear. Fabric: cotton poplin
Fractal Yarn (p: swirling solar winds). I spun most of this for Tour de Fleece (which feels like a lifetime ago!) and it's a huge accomplishment for me. I'm often afraid to break down gradient braids, so doing a fractal spin was a first for me! I also got it nice and fine; a practical weight for what I usually work with. Fiber: Emily C Gillies (now House of Wool) Luck of the Draw December 2022 on Merino/Silk
Handspun Sweater (p: we pull apart the stars). Ok, so this isn't finished, but handspun sweater. I think that speaks for itself as far as why I'm proud!

ok my first pair of pants!! tbh i'm not very happy with them but i did learn a lot. yes the waistband is obscured in the mirror pic on purpose...because it is so uneven....
sewing knits is hard!! i'm not sure what this fabric is (free, did not come with a label) but it's fairly stretchy, much less slippery than jersey i've sewn so in my arrogance, i did not swap out for a ballpoint needle. i didn't have difficulty w/ making stitches that don't jam the sewing machine (as i've often done w/ jersey) but getting pieces to stay aligned was REALLY hard so, as you can tell from the uneven seams, i had to go back and restitch some areas. in the future will be more thorough about pinning it and sewing more slowly
the pattern i used was the mood sewciety ixia leggings (free), but there's nothing particularly special about the instructions—it's just a standard pair of pants with a waistband, not even an elastic or anything—so i think i should have been less shy about altering the pattern to fit me better. it's supposed to be a size 4 but the size 4 in there has a much wider set of hips than i do (there is no way that waistband is the 25" the chart says the waist is! it's so much longer!) and there was a lot of initial gaping around the crotch area which i have only partially fixed. in the future may just try to base pants pieces more off my own measurements now that i have a better understanding of how pants patterns work
overall it's pretty comfy and feels nice so i decided to let it be but probably won't wear it outside much lol
btw i will post pictures of my completed sewing projects to #ange.sewing.final if you would like to track :-) ( @tchaikovskyed @monstrousgourmandizingcats etc)
up next: working on a cardigan :-) this one's woven fabric, so it's been much easier sewing so far

I found my base pattern for that Dinobot jacket. Just make a dinosaur face for the front instead of a brocade or some such.

The patterns are free, and they also make suggestions for fabrics to use with those patterns, and have a circle skirt calculator.  It also seems like their patterns are fairly size inclusive.
The link goes to Mood Fabrics’s website’s free patterns archive.

Sewstine’s kefta pattern is available for free. I recommend printing and taping before you buy fabric because Mood’s yardage estimates are…. scummy.

I posted this to the wrong blog and the video didn't show up anyways...
I have a new actual video up this week not just the bonus trailer. I make a jumpsuit using a free pattern I got from Mood Sewciety. I talk about the problems I had the changes I made and the final outcome. But hey it was free and a good starting point.

There is no better way to kick off the semester than at Mood Fabrics. As the most visited fabric store in the world, it really illustrates part of the beginning phases for most designers.
The massive Garment District location features sprawling rows of every fabric type on the market, making it the one stop shop for production teams. Their website features a list of their “Designer Fabrics”, naming companies such as Burberry, Carolina Herrera, Moschino, and The Row.
My favorite part of touring Mood was learning about their Sewciety. As I did more digging, I learned that online Mood offers sewing tutorials, classes, and free sewing patterns. As a fashion merchandising student, these extra services are attractive as I have a very limited fabric and sewing background. Learning about Mood’s extra services is attractive that I could learn how to sew from the same Fabric store that was featured on Project Runway.

finally finished this cardigan!! spent ~7 hours sewing the pieces together on labor day, then another few hours spread out over the last several days attaching pockets, hemming, snipping stray thread, etc.
don't know what fabric this is (free, no label) but it was really easy to work with — just a little bit stretchy, but probably not enough to be a knit, so i used a universal needle and didn't have any problems. it's very breathable and cool, which i like bc it's still quite hot in nyc lol. it's medium weight and a light, somewhat reflective color/fabric so i am impressed by the lack of transparency! if you zoom in you can see there's a cute subtle nature-y pattern :)
this is a modified version of the mood sewciety willow cardigan pattern (free). it's pretty simple and i'm a fan of the huge pockets! i've wanted to make myself a cardigan for a while because i rotate between the two i have constantly (and they are black and gray, so more colors is nice).
i didn't like the pattern's puffy upper sleeve combined w/ smaller lower sleeve (i like longer loose sleeves), so i made the upper sleeve smaller and extended it to be a longer sleeve.
unfortunately i didn't think to account for the smaller sleeve size by cutting out smaller armholes LOL. so i artificially made the armholes smaller with gathers. i think i should have made the upper part of the sleeve a bit bigger and roomier tbh (it's a little snug around the armpits) but am happy with the sleeve otherwise
this was my first time sewing pockets and i enjoy having them, but they were kind of a pain to sew on straight while finishing the edges at the same time, so i just hemmed them first then sewed them on. they're still not very straight though
basting fabric pieces together to keep them aligned WORKS. it's so time-consuming but worth it. breaking up with bobby pins basting is my new best friend (jk they both have their uses)

Watch "Making a Jumpsuit using the Popular Overall pattern (See Desc. for Time Codes/links)" on YouTube
https://youtu.be/g1m-_fdY24I
I have a new video about making overalls/jumpsuit. It's long. I put time codes for topics in the description. It's a free pattern from Mood Sewciety, so while I had major problems with it it was free and worth it as a starting point....
