- You know those days that just …aren’t your day? Well you were having one of those.

- No matter what you did or didn’t do, you couldn’t shake that nagging feeling of sadness that washed over you; regardless of whether or not you really had a reason to be sad.

- And because of that, you were really in no mood to socialize. All you wanted to do was get back home and crawl into bed, blocking out the rest of the world and stewing in your misery until you could fall asleep and wake up in a hopefully better mood.

- But doing something like that was easier said than done when you had a boyfriend like Dean Portman who; under his hostile exterior, was the equivalent of a brash puppy: always hanging all over you and jumping around your room like he just snorted a line of pure sugar.

- There’s really no escaping him; especially not when he’s used to walking you home from school everyday and knows exactly where to find you by the time the final bell rings. You don’t get very far before he’s appearing beside you, slinging an arm around your shoulder and pulling you into his side with a cheery smile and greeting.

- It doesn’t take him very long to figure out that somethings the matter. You’re usually all smiles when you see him; just like he is when he sees you, so when you give him a quiet greeting and barely spare him a second glance, his own mood immediately dampens and he’s quick to try and see what’s wrong.

- He furrows his brows at your behavior, asking if you’re okay to which you merely shrug and say that you’re fine; either not wanting to get into it or not knowing what’s wrong yourself. He doesn’t buy it for a second.

- Regardless of what’s actually the problem, he immediately thinks he’s done something wrong and wracks his brain for something he could have done to make you; what he thinks is, mad at him. This isn’t helped by the fact that you softly pull yourself from his grip and tell him that you’re “just gonna head home”; not so subtly hinting at the fact that you don’t want him walking with you.

- His voice softens and he asks if you’re “sure you’re okay”, watching you closely as you put on a little smile and assure him you’re fine, making up some excuse for wanting to be alone. It’s then that he knows for sure that there’s something wrong and that it isn’t him.

- He hesitantly tells you alright, deciding that it’s probably best to give you a at least a little space to try and get yourself out of the funk you’re in; but resolves to visit you the next day if he doesn’t hear from you first.

- The two of you say goodbye, he gives you a hug and watches solemnly as you walk off towards your house.

- Scratch that whole giving you space thing. It takes him all of a few hours to throw his jacket back on and begin his trek over to your house. He knows that somethings wrong and he can’t stand the thought of you just sitting there alone while he sits back and fiddles with things he doesn’t care about.

- He’s such a regular at your house that he honestly just walks in at this point, greeting whoever is home; not to their surprise, before he makes his way up to your room. He gives your door a knock before he steps inside, finding you already in bed, listening to a cassette as you lay curled up in misery.

- He crouches by your bed, resting his chin on his hands as he quietly greets you. You greet him back and he gives you a little smile, nodding to your bed and asking if he can “get in there”.

- Once you agree, he slides in behind you and wraps himself around you, pulling you in close.

- A few minutes of silence pass before he asks if you’re going to tell him what’s wrong. If you don’t immediately, he’ll make some guesses of his own, waiting for you to agree with one: family, friends, school, etc.

- He’ll listen quietly when you do, offering you a little bit of advice here and there or just letting you get it all out while he traces patterns onto your skin.

- If you really don’t want to talk about it, he’ll understand and he’ll shift his focus onto distracting you and cheering you up: making stupid jokes, telling you funny stories, talking about other things like music or movies. He probably manages to at least make you smile with his antics.

- And once he gets that smile, it’s game over for you. He’ll almost immediately insist that the two of get out of bed, cheerfully getting up and pulling you with him or throwing you over his shoulder.

- He thinks that all you need is some more distracted and; whether you like it or not, now that your mood is brighter, he’s going to force you to do something that he thinks you’ll like.

- It might take a little while but his plan does wind up working. You find yourself forgetting that your impromptu hangout was all a product of you being upset and begin to have actual fun with him.

- Somewhere in the middle of it all, you just have to stop and look at him, wondering how you got so lucky as he turns to you with a big, beautiful smile.
