Art+ Proportions and Tips (Head part)

I am not an expert on any of this, I've simply been drawing this way for 5ish years. This is a tutorial I put together for my friends that I thought I'd share here as well. This is not a be all end all, this is simply a few suggestions and tips to help while drawing.

Start with a circle.

Next, draw a line down the middle, and another about the horizontal middle where you want the head to be looking. In this case I want a surprised happy expression so I have it angled upwards. Draw a line at the bottom if you want (not required).

The horizontal line down the middle will be your eyebrows.

Do your jaw. Can be whatever shape you want, but it’s gonna connect to the bottom of the circle line and the mid line.

Draw your facial features now if you’d like. The middle line we drew will be where your eyebrows go. Ears start at eyebrow line, and end at the nose. Eyes are under eyebrows but above the nose, and lips are under the nose.

Now the next is the neck. This is a cylinder of any shape, however different thicknesses will determine how your character comes across. Want them more beefy? Bigger neck. Leaner? Thinner neck. The second part is a squished triangle. This triangle is gonna connect all the way to your shoulders and makes your neck look more neck-like.

Finally you got hair. Amongst other details. Hair has typically two categories:

- widows peak

- line

For a widows peak it’s going to be slightly angled towards the eyebrow in the middle, and pinched towards the back of the head subtly at the sides. For a line, it’s a curved line around the head for the hairline. Do not forget side burns.

For other views the same rules can be applied. Don’t ask how to do side profiles because I’m not sure how I do them tbh. However sides don’t require the middle line, where 3/4 rely on a mid line to indicate the direction their facing. Shifting the eyebrow line up and down can change many things.
