btw it wont be the first or last time i say it but sheezy.art is cool.
if youre an artist and youve been looking for somewhere to actually make friends/form an art community rather than just sadly refreshing your feed for likes/rbs i would recommend sheezy.art!
it's in beta rn and theres a timer that lets 10 people register every few hours, but theres also a kofi you can support thatll just let you register right away
the website's staff and multiple friends were the ones who brought the site to my attention (thank you lemmy), and every who ive met/talked to there has been super active and sweet ^_^ ik social media can be kind of daunting if you do art for fun so now its my turn to push you guys towards the site

To every single artist feeling a little lost or confused and looking towards art tutorials online to help you Improve, I offer you this one vital nugget of advice:
Art Tutorials are not Law. They are not even Rules. In fact, they are at best suggestions on how one MIGHT tackle a visual problem. Do not let the language tutorials use fool you into thinking there is only one universally acceptable way to make art!!!!

make bad art or you will always feel bad about your art. Make bad art until you find joy in the crooked lines and the off colours. Make bad art because art is about expression and artwork is never ugly because it was made by someone who has lived a life no one else will ever live. Make bad art and find love through ugly. Make bad art so you make art at all. Make bad art.

would you have dinner with your ocs. woild you eat them. which of your ocs do you think would taste best
Yes I would have dinner with them no I wouldn't eat them BUT okay breaking it down. I think probably Vance and Ellis would taste like shit. On account of their diets. Which are lacking and also extremely bad. LMAO
Matteo would probably taste good the same way an overfed chicken would taste good, also his kind was sort of hunted to endangered status for their pelts and it's more than likely that back when that happened, people were eating them too. So I wouldn't be surprised if a monster hunter granny somewhere had a Noctmare Roast recipe somewhere HFMDVBS
Emmett would taste best on account of being a harpy (bird) and also a Baker (so he got croissants at the ready...) <3
All that being said I AM still stuffing Matteo and Ellis in my mouth like a toddler with barbie dolls :)

today i learned twitter artists are posting their own art but captioning it as if they're reposting someone else's work, bc it gives them waaay more engagement. and its worked every time. the state of social media is truly so over 😭

This, exactly!!!!
Creators (artists, writers, etc) have been begging for that level of active engagement for years. We miss doing ask blogs, we miss interaction, we want to engage with you wherever possible.
I'll turn on anon, I'll make posts introducing my guys, but at the end of the day if the energy wanes or isn't met, it's hard to want to keep posting! And that's a sentiment SOOOO many artists I know echo - especially original character/story artists.
We all crave connection, but the problem is that to make the connection, we all have to be willing to extend our little paws and boop.
Even when the boop button isn't there!
i genuinely hope that boop day inspires everyone to interact more with other tumblr users. because it’s clearly way more fun this way!! even once the boop button is gone, there’s still asks, tag and ask games, comments, dms, fuck it let’s bring back blog rates i don’t care. part of the reason that tumblr is dying is that its way less social than it used to be. let’s fix that!!

The secret wish is to write a fanfic that someone loves so much they make fan art of it, or to create a drawing that someone creates an entire fic based off of it.

Also, I'm not telling you to stop using twitter/tumblr/etc all at once, but you cannot rely on them for stability, do not fall into complacency that way.
Bluesky, Cohost, Inkblot, Sheezy.art, etc are all viable alternatives either already up and running or in the latter three cases, in active development by and for creatives. Consider looking at them one of these days! They need your support to thrive!
I promise you the experiences I've had there have been 10x more calm, more refreshing and more human than anything I've experienced here or on twitter in ages.
Things can be better but by god you have to be willing to let go of what is already rotting!!! Take my hand!!! We are capable of so much better, we can make things so much better, but you have to stay connected!!!
Creators I love you but it's time to wake up
Among rumors about our tumblr user data being sold off to Midjourney/Generative AI, recent Extremely transphobic events (that have been ongoing) coming to a head, another extremely concerning internet censorship bill being pushed in upper levels of government, and a general air of frustration over how the site belongs to and is operated by perhaps the second stupidest CEO (second only to twitters own) of our age, I'm very done with the last few vestiges of what the old internet held for artists.
And if you're reading this, you probably are too.
I know we're tired. We are all tired. It is not always viable to pack up shop and move, again and again and again.
From tumblr to twitter to anywhere else we've ever grown up posting, things no longer work. Our audiences are kneecapped by aggressive and hostile algorithms, our reach is abysmal - if we aren't shadow-banned or silenced for one (transphobic) reason or another, we're thrust into an ever growing pit of hostility where the only thing that drives clicks is fighting and contention.
We're tired. We're so fucking tired. We aren't businesses, we aren't content mills, we cannot keep this pace that modern social media has set for us, to wring every ounce of creativity out of us to profit from and leave us rotting.
The key to staying afloat here, and I cannot stress this enough, is to stay connected to your peers.
Pack up and move as units if you must. Exodus from the sites that are killing us. Push your entire friend group of artists to move from one site to the next that promises you a kinder experience.
Art drives movements, it drives change, it is all that encompasses being human. If you take that away from the shitty places, they will be left with nothing but a cesspit of inhumanity and the people who follow you will be more incentivized than ever to move with you.
Yes, this is terrifying. There are no guarantees. There never was, and never are, and never will be.
But stay connected. Stay human.
Support each other and be willing to hold hands and jump when we all - as a group - need to jump from the flames we're all trying to convince ourselves wont kill us before rescue comes.
Rescue isn't coming, rescue will be found hand in hand with each other. I'm offering you my hand, please take it. There's always a new start, there are always helping hands reaching for you. You have to look up from the doom-scroll long enough to see and take them.
