You know, I have said it before and I will say it again that itβs fine to ship whoever you want. But itβs one thing to explain why the ship you prefer is better suited as endgame in your eyes. And itβs another thing to insist that itβs undeniably the one that ends up happening, especially when there isnβt even any real canon evidence to indicate that.
I understand that weβre all growing very impatient and the lack of news has left a lot of room for interpretation, but we canβt just give in to the chaos and refuse to accept whatβs actually written in the books.
Itβs an objective statement that Elain and Azriel have had multiple moments that do align with what would be considered romantic tension. Itβs a fact that they have been written to enjoy being near each other. Itβs a fact that the two of them are often mentioned to be looking at each other. Itβs a fact that we are told Elain seeks him out for peace. Itβs a fact that we are told Azriel looks at the gift she got him every night before sleep. Itβs a fact that he has a secret that is his to tell and it is his feelings for her. Itβs a fact that he believes she belongs with him and that the cauldron was wrong. Itβs a fact that she would have kissed him if they hadnβt been interrupted. Itβs a fact that she finds his biggest insecurity beautiful. Itβs a fact that the foundation for them has been laid for a long time now.
Does this mean that everyone has to like them? NO! Does it mean that theyβre more likely to happen? Yes.
Itβs as simple as that. Thereβs no reason for there to be this much animosity, insensitivity, toxicity and hatred amongst us. The books are already written the way they are and itβs nobodyβs fault that the author decided to set things up the way she did. Itβs fair for people to like a ship that the story sets up, just like itβs fair for others to like ships that the story doesnβt set up. But they are two different things and itβs useless to try and deny that.

My Elriel/Gwynriel/Elucien opinions no one asked for but I'm gonna say them anyway:
If Elain were a man, half of yβall would be writing 20k word metas about his trauma and the way heβs underestimated. But because sheβs soft, pretty, and polite? Sheβs βflat.β Okay.
The word "deserves" needs to be banned from the ship discourse. "Elain doesn't deserve Azriel or Lucien." STOP. Just stop. Youβre not talking about βdeserve.β Youβre talking about who you want out of the way.
I like Gwyn. She's sweet and kind. But her stans have mixed canon and fanon Gwyn up so much that sometimes I have to remind myself of what is actually canon.
Gwynriels have made Gwyn the blueprint for emotional maturity, Azrielβs βtrue match,β and the golden solution to everything wrong in the story β while Elain is treated like a villain for existing. Itβs wild. They twist Gwyn into this flawless, hyper-perceptive savior just to justify a ship that barely exists in canon β and then call it βhealthyβ while tearing another girl down.
I donβt get why Gwynriels get so pressed about the Lightsinger theory. I mean most gwynriels actually do believe that she's a lightsinger I mean you guys make fanarts, fanfics about it. You guys romanticize it. But the second Elriels bring up the CANON representation of what lightsingers are described like in the books suddenly it's a "reach" and "misogyny." So itβs cute when you frame it like a soulmate aesthetic β but when we point out whatβs actually written in the book, itβs a personal attack?(And letβs be clear: No one is saying Gwyn is evil. Pointing out that her traits align with how SJM describes Lightsingers in ACOSF is not slander. Itβs reading comprehension.)
I donβt hate Elucien. I like Lucien. Heβs loyal, and deserves peace. But Elain isnβt some reward for his trauma. And Lucien doesnβt need to be stuck waiting around for a bond to magically turn into love. Let them both choose someone who actually chooses them back.
If Sarah does decide to write Elucien as endgame? Then sheβs gonna have to do THE WORK. Because right now, thereβs no emotional build-up β just a bond and a whole lot of silence. That said, Iβd still read an Elucien book cause of my girl Elain. I just want the story to feel earned, not forced.
Elriel could be the most beautiful love story in the whole series β aching, tender, and chosen against all odds. But some people are too stuck on the fated mates trope to understand that the most powerful kind of love is the one thatβs chosen, not assigned.
Gwynriel to me feels like it would end up becoming Nessian 2.0 β same training trope, same βhealing through weaponsβ arc, same dynamic just copy-pasted with different names.
The whole βbut I just want Lucien to be happy π₯Ίβ and βbaby LuLuβ thing needs to stop. Like... I love Lucien. But some of yβall are out here infantilizing him so hard it gives me secondhand embarrassment.
One of the reasons I donβt ship Gwynriel (and trust me, there are plenty) β but this is one of the main ones βis because Azriel has already shared incredibly intimate, one-of-a-kind moments with Elain. Moments so personal, even Rhys and Cassian were stunned. The Truth-Teller scene? He gave her a blade heβs never shared with anyone else. The potatoes scene? Pure softness. The late-night gardening plans? Even questioning the Cauldron β something heβs feared and obeyed his whole life β he did that for her. Now imagine one day Azriel hands Gwyn Truth-Teller. Would it hit? Not really. Because we, the readers, have already seen him do that. The significance is gone. Itβs no longer a sacred gesture β it would be viewed as a habit.
Gwynriels have this headcanon where Azriel tells Gwyn, "I used to think the Cauldron was wrongβ¦ but then I met you." Letβs really think about that. Imagine Gwyn finding out that her βmateβ β the one fate supposedly chose for her β questioned the Cauldron over another girl. NO NO NO. Thatβs not romantic. Thatβs humiliating. It makes Gwyn feel like Plan B cause shes the safer choice.
I have more but I guess I'll save them for another day!!

Imagine having the most intimidating male in Prythian shopping for the perfect necklace for you, getting so jealous of other guys near you that he has to always be near an exit, telling you about the song of the wind because you asked if he can fly, immediately coming for you when youβre in danger even if it means thereβs a high chance that it will cost him his life, having to look at the medicine you gifted him in order to fall asleep, getting overwhelmed by the fact that heβs touching your neck, thinking about how he is willing to beg on his fucking knees to please you, thinking of you as the sun at dawn, going against the religious and social heβs known his entire life because he is certain you and him belong togetherβ¦I would perish. It makes me weak to even think of it.

Here is the thing:
Lucien cares about his mate.
Lucien doesnβt care about Elain.
Azriel cares about Elain.
Azriel doesnβt care about conceptual mate bond.
Lucien cares about a mate that was given to him and whom he is obligated to care for due to instincts and societal expectations.
Azriel cares about Elain the person.
Hope this helps.

βIt made sense that Azriel alone had listened to her [Elain]. The male who heard things others could not . . . Perhaps he, too, had suffered as Elain had before he understood what gift he possessed.β -ACOWAR Chapter 33
Something I found interesting while reading the series is how organically SJM ties Azriel and Elain together narratively through impactful and pivotal developments to both characters. When Elain says earlier in chapter 24 no one ever hears her or sees her, that no one ever really tries to and everyone else believed she was going mad-it was only Azriel who attempted to understand her. Azriel didnβt give innocuous, generic suggestions of taking her outside, he listened to her and truly saw her. Azriel met her where she was, his understanding became the light that guided her out of the murky realm of visions clouding her mind.

I can not get over how perfectly @renitorii captured the state of Elainβs mind and Azriel holding her fast, an anchor in her storm. Thank you thank you @renitorii for being so incredible through this whole process, it was such a pleasure to work with you! β€οΈβ€οΈ

A quick reminder, because apparently people don't know how to read:
Elain didn't abandon Nesta.
Nesta abandoned Elain. Over and over and over again. Going so far as to bypass her and pretend not to see her at the market.
Elain and Cassian were the two people who tried and tried and tried again. And kept trying. Even when they knew that it wouldn't lead anywhere.
Name ONE gift that Nesta gave Elain or Cassian. It's okay, I'll wait. None. You are right. None. On the other hand, I can name every gift that they gave her.
Not 'understanding' that Elain cried when she saw Nesta at HOW over Nesta not getting better isn't because Elain is malicious, or resentful, or cruel. It's because Elain is watching someone she LOVES languishing. It's not because 'oh, it's been two weeks and she isn't getting better!' It's because there is no progress. She knows it will take time, but it doesn't mean that it's not hard on her. Why should we only see one side of the equation? The same people who claim that Feyre is an unreliable narrator, for some reason feel that Nesta is 100% reliable? Addiction or illness don't just impact the addict or the sick person. It impacts everyone around them. It's often families and friends who bear the brunt of the burden.
Nesta only felt anger. Elain felt sorrow.
That people don't understand this and the nuance of how Nesta's situation was absorbed and handled by each sister is kind of concerning.

When they say 'they exchanged glances. Occasional brushes of fingers' I imagine Elain and Azriel standing next to each other at some function, or waiting for someone to arrive, or for him to go on a mission, and she skims her fingertips over his scarred hand. He doesn't react, because he can't. But he feels each and every movement. And then she briefly hooks her pinkie around his and he holds that little finger in the crook of his own like it's the greatest gift. He doesn't want to relinquish it. When it's time to separate, he always brushes his thumb down the middle of her palm, gently pressing on her pulse point. The steady thump of her beating heart is what keeps him going.

If you are fanfic readers and you havenβt read this adorable Eriel fanfic Naughty Neighbors
Do so as soon at you can.
Itβs an old fic but itβs Elain owning a flower shop and Azriel being a tattoo artist next door, and they are neighbors too.
The author doesnβt write anymore but they have a plethora of amazing fics. Feysand, Elriel and Nessian. (Some of the best Nessian fics ever! Nurse Nesta and prisoner Cassianβamazing!)

Free Day Elriel Month
Oh, love, let me see inside your heart
All the cracks and broken parts
The shadows in the light
There's no need to hide
'Cause I'm on fire like a thousand suns
I couldn't put it out even if I wanted to
These flames tonight
Look into my eyes and say you want me, too
Like I want you

My latest piece was inspired by the painting by Dean Cornwell, 'The Other Side', 1918. The beautifully intimate kiss between reunited lovers and the fully extended wings sparked my creativity to incorporate a dusk palette for Elain and Azriel. I did a lot of exploring with this piece and I'm very pleased with the new stained glass look I went for. π₯°

I was thinking about LOA, and somehow her character reflects in many ways Daisyβs from The Great Gatsby. Both had found the love of their lives and deliberately let it go because they were afraid to lose the comfort that comes from the familiarity of their lives, and the way they weren't brave enough to risk it. Also, how both of them did cheat on their husbands (knowing that Beron indeed did cheat on her too, the way Tom did).
The reason why many people feel compassion for her is they see her as a weak, fragile queen locked in her castle, waiting for her savior (Helion) π to come on his white pegasusβ¦ except we had a full explanation of how she willingly left him and went back to Beron.
But when it comes to Elain and Azriel--a couple that caused so much controversy, with their many sweet, genuine, and even innocent moments: of him listening to her gardening plans, sunning his wings in front of her in a garden, risking his life to get her back (and he did π)--their attraction to each other that bided its time and transformed from a beautiful friendship to a romantic involvement ... people started calling them toxic for wanting to be together. Elriel, with their almost-shared kiss, were able to attract many hateful people to this fandom who call Elain a slut for initiating the kiss while Lucien sleeps upstairs, and Azriel a lustful, pervert, incel fuckboy for having a sexual attraction toward the female he thinks of every night.
These people are able to glamorize the affair between LOA and Helion, while she's married, sharing 7 children with her husband, and her coward savior that moved on normally with his life; fucking everything that walks and talks and acting like a teenage boy--while hating and demonizing Elain and Azriel for simply being attracted to each other. We said that many times, and I don't understand why it needs to be repeated: Elain owes Lucien nothing; she's not his wife nor his fiancΓ©e. She has the liberty to be with whoever her heart desires. If having a mate will stop you from falling in love, then this mating bond is no more than a beautified cage.
Another thing: donβt dare compare Azriel to Beron. This vicious coward has nothing on him.
@nikethestatue I just remembered this post that has been in my drafts for weeks, lol.

Iβm so tired of hearing people hate on Elain after all these years because she βdidnβt grow vegetables.β Do you guys ever think that maybe Elain learned to cook and now makes dinner for her whole extended family and friends because she feels guilty about it? Even though Feyre and co tell her it isnβt necessary and they can all *magic* food into existence. Is it so hard to believe that maybe she isnβt perfect but sheβs trying to be better? Yβall will find any excuse to hate her when all sheβs ever been is kind.
