El 11 de septiembre de 1973, Pinochet lanzó un golpe de Estado en Chile, asesinando al presidente socialista Salvador Allende y, posteriormente, instaurando una dictadura militar sostenida y financiada por Estados Unidos. Todo esto se produjo dentro del marco de la llamada ‘Operación Condor’, cuyo objetivo era aniquilar toda vía socialista o revolucionaria de izquierdas en América Latina, con la instauración del neoliberalismo a través de dictaduras militares en la mayoría de los países latinoamericanos.

El cantautor Víctor Jara, que también era activista y militante, fue uno de los miles de represaliados en Chile, tras el golpe. Después de ser torturado, fue asesinado fríamente el día 16 de septiembre. Encontraron su cuerpo arrojado en la calle con 44 balazos. 

Hoy, 43 años después de su asesinato, sus versos y sus canciones siguen latiendo en todos los rincones del mundo.
