fun behaviors to give dragons that aren't feline/canine based

cause as much as i love dragons purring and roaring i wish there was just more variety in how they would act

clacking their teeth together to show contentedness/happiness (budgies)

using tails as a defensive weapon in a whip like fashion (iguana)

twitching to express that they're not a threat to members of their species (hognose snake)

feeling calm when eyes are hooded/covered (birds of prey)

head bobbing as a threat display (anoles/bearded dragons)

flattening neck or sides to appear bigger (snakes/lizards)

mantling over food to protect it from hatchmates (birds of prey)

wiggling neck as a courting maneuver (budgies)

audibly grinding teeth as a warning (macaques)

maintained eye contact as a challenge (gorillas)

pounding wings against sides as a threat (gorillas)

slapping other dragons with their claws when their personal bubble is invaded (seals)

hoards used as a site to impress mates (birds of paradise)

snorting when undergoing heightened stress (horses)

making repeated loud noises with surroundings to establish territory (woodpeckers)

loud constant arguments with other dragons when roosting (bats)

building lairs that cause a domino effect of change in the land around them (beavers)

slapping their tails against the ground/water as a warning (beavers)

wiggling tail tip to attract prey (various animals)

raising spines/frills as a response to danger and carrying on with their usual business as they believe they're protected (lionfish)

and im not saying canine and feline behaviors are wrong or bad to give a dragon (people wouldn't write dragons with those behaviors if they weren't fun in the first place!) but i feel for creatures that are mythological giant winged lizards that you can do more and get experimental with it. often the more unfamiliar behavior the more dragony the dragon feels

“Who’s your friend, Bree?” Icarus isn’t looking at her. All his attention is funneled directly onto Mark. He’s grinning as usual, baring sharp teeth that gleam like knives in the dim light backstage. He told her they were just props. Bria’s never seen him without them, even out of costume.

“Bria! Get your attack dog off me!” Mark squirms or tries to at least. “Do you know who I am?! I’m Mark fucking Burns and I won’t stand for this.”

“You really shouldn’t give out your full name like that, Mark Burns,” Dakota pipes up, and something like a shudder runs through Mark’s body at the sound of his name flowing from her lips.

This is a good question! Mmm, I think I enjoy writing about their powers the most and how they use them in their every day life! Plus the effects of having a long life. Also the Aesthetics of mythical creatures are Impeccable! Out of all my favorite creatures, I've always wanted to explore werewolves. I've written stuff with vampires, but I am lacking in the werewolf content.

Bellwether: a Wip Intro

Welcome to Bellwether! This place looks like just out of a postcard... someone forgot to send. Red-brick storefronts, a diner with a jukebox and the same people in the same places every single day. Status: drafting/plotting (i'm just gonna make it up as I go. no plan)

Genre: supernatural/ mystery (?), rural paranormal.

Summary: an old group of what used to be friends and a newcomer are brought back together years after their town suffered a catastrophe. Now, as much as they try, they cannot ignore the signs anymore, and they must try to understand and reveal the patterns they tried to turn away from to break the cycle before it completes again, while also navigating the hardship of repairing relationships bonds that fractured, as well as grieving who they used to be... No one will come back the same.

I feel like this is an unpopular opinion, but more people should read incomplete/unfinished/in-progress fanfics.

I've noticed this huge trend where creators on tiktok and tumblr who will be explaining how to use Archive Of Our Own to new users and they always say "and make sure to scroll down and click completed only" or how people will go out of their way to mention they only read completed fics 'because they were traumatized when they forgot to check the dates and didn't realize this fic hadn't been updated since 2012'.

The thing is - I think by not engaging with and/or actively avoiding writer's WIPs readers are potentially adding to the aggregate of abandoned works. Now this obviously isn't the case for all abandoned fics, anything from major life events, to loss of interest, to getting busy can be a reason for a fic getting abandoned - but at least on some level I just know that writers are quitting while they're ahead when they aren't garnering any response or feedback because reading WIPs has become unpopular. If you're worried about reading something that hasn't been updated since 2012 then you can use the date updated function to sort out old fics.

Anyways, support your favorite fanfic writers by engaging with their WIPs.
