Yesterday Stella was transferred from Port of Nagoya to Kobe Suma. She was separated from her calf Lynn and grandson Earth who remain at Nagoya. She is currently alone at Kobe, but it is believed that at least one whale from Kamogawa will join here in the coming days.
Kobe will be opening on May 30th.

Apparently, back in July, Kamogawa SeaWorld said that Lovey is pregnant again with her third calf (both Kamogawa and Port of Nagoya have talked about it during shows but have made no official post online yet).
I must have missed the announcement at the time, but I haven't seen many other people mention it either, so I thought I would post it.
The pregnancy is the result of the artificial insemination exchange program with Chimelong in China, as Kamogawa don't have any male orca, so the calf will be a Russian transient / Icelandic hybrid.
Apparently Lara was also inseminated, but there was no mention of her being pregnant as well.
The announcement was made before the news that Marineland France had sold their whales to Japan, but I can't imagine Kamogawa wanting to jeopardise the pregnancy by bringing in more whales???

Feeling some kind of way about Tokitae's death, and watching Li'i be ignored like some kind of acceptable collateral damage... No. Not having it.

“Observing the birds in the penguin exhibit one day, a woman ran up, exclaiming to her family, “look at all the baby killer whales”.
- From the keeper / trainer letters page of the 1990 IMATA Soundings issue.
the only bad part about going to the zoo is hearing adult men confidently tell their kids or gfs objectively incorrect information about the animals we’re looking at and having to remain silent. do u know the restraint it takes to say nothing when a grown adult man tells someone “falcons are in the same family as eagles” next to me? no babygirl. no.

URGENT! DO YOU WANT TO HELP THE SOUTHERN RESIDENTS? PLEASE HELP US WRITE, CALL AND TEXT!
A lawsuit, National Wildlife Federation vs National Marine Fisheries Service, may finally determine the fate of the 4 Lower Snake River Dams, the salmon who spawn there and the remaining 75 Southern Resident Orca who desperately need salmon to survive. Biden needs to know that we want those dams breached. He's broken enough of his climate promises - let him know that, and the extinction of these amazing animals, isn't an option!
Public comment is also being sought on the matter. Please visit our page, BidenBreachNow, for talking points, social media shareables, and extensive information about why the dams need to go. This is a critical time. Please call, text, write or email, every day if you can, until August 31st. Even if you already have acted and/or shared, please do it again. Please keep sharing because every voice counts! The Snake River was once one of the top salmon rivers in the world. That is sadly no longer the case. Four deadbeat dams on the Lower Snake River have cost an estimated 8 to 9 billion dollars in failed salmon recovery attempts - taxpayer money! - and they lose millions more every year generating unstorable surplus energy. What they do sell is often sold at a loss. The dams continue to get older and costlier to maintain, while solar and wind energy have replaced their power output; energy efficiency alone has done the same seven times over.
These dams aren't even clean energy! Their reservoirs emit huge amounts of methane, which contributes to the climate crisis. Please help spread this if you can, and join in. We have a real chance here to get this done - so let's do it.
As the late and great Ken Balcomb said: "We're at a point in history where we need to wake up to what we have to consider: do we want whales, or not?"
He never stopped fighting for the Southern Residents, and neither should we.

Update;  TWO NEW CALVES!
One is the third calf for L94/Calypso, and the other is first calf for her niece L119/Joy.
No wonder they were confused over who the mother was - there were two calves, lol.
Tumblr media
In more positive news - there’s a new L pod calf!.
Seen with the L77 matriline on June 19th off Tofino. This new calf appears to be over three weeks old. Still unsure who the mother is.
