let me take a crack at this, firstly let's establish the facts:

"Harry literally can't even be near Voldemort without experiencing intense physical pain?" is incorrect, Harry's scar doesn't hurt when Voldemort is near necessarily, it seems that way because Voldemort is often angry when near Harry, so Harry's scar hurts, but this correlation doesn't mean proximity to Voldemort causes intense physical pain.

What causes the pain is Voldemort's anger.

Which is why Harry's scar hurts even when he's at Hogwarts, during class even. AKA when he's nowhere near Voldemort.

So it's Voldemort's bad mood that causes the pain. Not closeness.

So let's say Voldemort and Harry get together. Presumably, Voldemort likes Harry to some extent, enjoys his company, wants to spend time with him, wants his attention, eventually wants to show affection etc.

He probably isn't going to be in a bad mood doing all of that. Most likely, he'll be in a good mood. Or a curios mood. Or indifferent. As such, Harry's scar won't be hurting.

In fact, taking that Harry's scar hurts when Voldemort is angry, when Voldemort is pleased, it's safe to assume Harry might get some of that good feeling too.

We can argue then, that in a Tomarry context, Harry won't be in intense physical pain near Voldemort, he'll be feeling good instead as how his scar feels is influenced by Voldemort's mood.

This might even result in a positive feedback loop where Harry's scar will feel good and put him in a better mood in turn improving his interactions with Voldemort who will also feel more positively and it will ensure they both want to keep the other in a good place.

TLDR: With a little imagination the obstacles to developing a positive relationship between any two characters can be resolved.

Anon, do you also ask Dramione shippers how Hermione could possibly get with Draco when he's called her a mudblood and thinks she's inferior? Or does your judgemental "I just don't see how..." approach to fanfiction only apply to the ships you don't personally enjoy or agree with? Dramione, Drarry and frankly, every single non-canon HP ship doesn't align with canon because it's fanfiction. It's not intending to align with canon in the first place.

For the record I don't ship Dramione but I can see how people who do ship it can imagine the characters overcoming their canon revulsion towards each other. If you can grasp how other non-canon relationships could work then simply apply that logic to Tomarry and you're golden.

I saw someone asking this and found myself genuinely curious too. Also not trying to be negative or anything. But how could Tomarry ever realistically work when Harry literally can't even be near Voldemort without experiencing intense physical pain?

No one's given a convincing answer so far and I get that everyone's free to like whatever they want. But it's a bit strange to be into something that has no real alignment with canon at all.

There is a tendency antithetical to creative thought I see all too often, especially nowadays; that if you dislike something, the flaws become common sense.

Consider, really consider, how absurd it is to come to a Tomarrymort fanfiction blog and ask "how could you do something so uncanon! There's a plot device that stops this, so you shouldn't enjoy it!"

The obvious answer, the only answer, is: because I enjoy Tomarry, I am willing to put creative thought into its execution. Because I don't hate Tomarry, flaws are merely elements to acknowledge instead of reasons to hate it. In fact, all this ask did was remind me "wow, normally we just skim around this using simple explanations, but leaving it in would be a fantastic foundation for a fic, why haven't we mined this more?" Which I think really accentuates the difference in mindset between people who like and dislike a subject.

can we just appreciate how harry potter truly gives no fucks?

he will choke you in broad daylight on a public street for stealing something from his dead godfather.

he will beat you bloody, again in broad daylight in front of his entire team and an entire stadium of people for mocking his best friend.

he will use an unforgivable torture curse on you for spitting on one of the few adults he actually respects.

he will laugh at and mock and wave at the death eater, who just killed his godfather and is trying to kill him, for how much trouble she’ll be in with the darkest wizard ever for failing to get the prophecy like he instructed.

he will call some random boy’s mother stupid for believing bullshit stated in the prophet.

he will mock the spoiled boy for his father being in jail when it was him that put the boy’s father in jail.

he will also mock the spoiled boy’s mother for her shitty husband being in jail even though he’s the reason her husband is in jail and will also dare her to take a shot at him there and then in a public store.

he will mock his dead father’s friend to his face for trying to be a daredevil like his godfather and leaving his pregnant wife behind.

he will make fun of the same girl for crying because:

1) she thought his best friend of four years was his girlfriend

2) she lost the quidditch match to him

3) her best friend who sold out his illegal resistance group and his best friend put a permanent acne jinx on her best friend

he will send his bitter teacher across the room with a protection spell and treat said teacher like he’s his subordinate.

he will throw a badge at his best friend’s forehead for not believing him and mock him for being jealous of his fame.

he will lie saying his godfather is a convicted murderer to get his abusers to abide his requests.

he will threaten to reveal his identity as a wizard to their guests if they fail to meet his commands.

he will carry out masterful psychological warfare using the memory of his death mother on a member of authority to get what he wants out of him.

harry’s jar of fucks is empty and collecting dust on the shelf. the fucks he gives are buried six feet under with his family. it’s so funny to me when people who haven’t seen the books call movie harry rude or bitchy or annoying because it’s like mate, YOU HAVE NO IDEA. these weaklings would NOT be able to handle book harry.

My favourite hc is Hermione's reaction when/if Harry would disclose complete details about his life at the Dursleys (he prolly wouldn't but let's assume he does). There's a viral post about how Ron and the other Weasleys would try to attack the Dursleys if they ever found out, with Harry trying to restrain them. But nearly no one gives enough credit to Hermione in that post. When she thought a teacher was trying to kill Harry, she set him on fire. When a teacher was about to torture Harry, she dumped her in the forbidden forest with hopes that some creature gets her. Also including so many other acts like the infamous jinxed parchment, trapping a woman in a jar, canary attack and all the extents she'd be willing to go to with illegal jinxes and potions, and thievery. She isn't a saint and spares little mercy while punishing someone who she considers 'deserving'. Say what you like, I just don't think she'd be the er - sensible one when it comes to finding out her best friend was abused for a decade. More realistically speaking, while Harry is occupied trying to restrain the Weasleys, she'd probably have gone ahead herself and committed something morally...questionable to the Dursleys and that's the end of their life as they know it. Because If there's one thing about Hermione, it's that you do not mess with her or her loved ones without expecting something really nasty in store.

Hi!!! I was wondering if you could help me find a fic! A few months ago I read a fic where Harry goes to the room of requirements, feeling alone and wishes for people that care for him. Next thing you know, he’s back in time with Tom and his friends, he wants to stay away but he’s slowly feeling closer to them. Just to discover he had accidentally tied them all together, like a soulbond/soul tie.

I’ve been looking EVERYWHERE for it but I can’t find it. I hope you’ve read it 😭😭

I got into fanfiction through Legend of Zelda but HP was so culturally significant I was in there a lot too. When I was 11 I wrote self-insert fanfiction where I was older and Harry and Draco were in love with me and I sang angsty music about how I couldn't respond to their feelings. You have to understand I have always been aro/ace and not particularly romantically curious - I only wrote self-insert because my favourite fanfics were self-insert and a love triangle because all the fics about women going on adventures in fanfiction featured love drama. #Society moment? You decide

It was just a Thing I Liked for years - most things are - and I had floaty tastes. I was on that Snupin classique train. I was reading 2004 doujinshi.

2015. I'm 21. I'm in a stage of arrested development. I'm shakily achieving self-determination. I just started writing fanfiction again for the first time in years. Long fanfiction too! I become more interested in fanfiction in general. Now, my friend likes Harry Potter. "Have you read Digging for the Bones" my friend asks. No. I haven't. I go to Fanfiction.net. I find Digging for the Bones.

Lives changed. Generations redefined. My entire existence now exists in service of Snape being Harry Potter's authority figure. I read 50+ Severitus fics that year and nearly all of them are terrible. I don't care. I am a human altered.

Generally from that point on literally every time I swing back to HP fandom it's to try a new Severitus fanfiction. Problems with Potions, By His Side, Crime and Punishment, don't ask me about any of these because I don't remember. For years my entire personality in HP fandom was Severitus I cannot understate how foundational it was to me

That same friend likes Tomarry. I think it's pretty good and makes a lot of sense. A seed is planted in the back of my head: "Yeah, Tomarry makes sense".

I read the Two Body Problem. Hermione genfic. I become more deeply invested in Diary Tom as an independent character. The Tom Riddle fixation abruptly clipped me sideways up the head mid-structuring. What if Tom Riddle tried to get Severitused and failed. Has anyone considered that. Can anyone hear me)

I hope it's a little more clear why I have a "whatever makes Tom happy" shipping policy and why the fics that inspired VoV weren't Tomarry. Fics that posit Tom as a love interest just do not do it for me. I don't want Tom to be in a relationship because he's attractive, I want him to be in a relationship because it's alien stimulus to him and probably a more productive outlet for his wretched energy than anything else he has going on

It's so disgusting for cis men to take a sick glee in women potentially being denied life-saving healthcare due to misogynistic laws in general, because they will never have their bodily autonomy threatwned in such a way, but again: YOU ARE A WHITE MAN.
