Okay I’m gonna go on a little bit of a rant here but I just need someone to tell me that my anger is at least a little bit justified?
I know this is a long post but if you have 5 minutes please take a moment to read this and offer any advice if you have any
So for a bit of context the company that I work for (big brand in retail) are currently in the middle of moving to a new store which is due to open on Friday. For the past three weeks we’ve been helping to get stuff ready in the new store instead of us all having no jobs for 3 weeks, which is slay!
(I must specify that we were all told this was going to happen months ago, as well as being told that we’d most likely be working slightly shorter days considering we’d still technically be working on a building site and there would still be construction going on)
So last week we were working a lot less hours than originally planned (thankfully all of us still being paid our full days wage tho) due to the actual construction of the store still being way way behind schedule, and we were all in agreement that there was no way that we would be opening this week bc we still didn’t have some things that were vital to us being ready to open eg. a car park, any sort of managerial rooms, both staff and public toilets, working heating, check outs, or even a front door for that matter. Safe to say that doesn’t make for a functional store right?
So after spending two weeks in what is essentially a large warehouse with some aisles, there’s a small group of us that came in last Friday feeling a little under the weather. Now usually I’d put it down to the time of year, but something about working in a store with no heating, no break room, and very very little to do gave me the slight inclination that this might have at least a little something to do with the conditions? (I’d also like to note that I am not someone that usually suffers from seasonal colds during winter, I’ll usually only get 1 a year, which will on average last like 4 days max. This is my 4th cold in 3 months, which can also be linked to working for this company since we were suffering in similar conditions at the old store where we had no stock on our shelves for the last two months)
Fast forward to today, where there is now 8 (9 including the one person who phoned in sick) out of the 15 of us due in today fighting for our lives from this cold. We’ve all got varying levels of illness, some of us more stuffy, some of the worse ones hardly able to talk without coughing up a lung or hardly able to actually hold themselves upright. None of the managers are ill (how convenient), and only one of them is really seeming to show any sort of pity for us. Now surely management should see this many members of staff ill and think ‘yeah maybe we should be sending at least some of them home?’, right?
Wrong.
Instead, we were told to suck it up because ‘it’s store opening week’ and see how we felt later. We were then all given various jobs to do, most of which including some form of cleaning/dusting (also must be noted there is dirt and dust EVERYWHERE in this store, it’s hard not to inhale it even before you’re sweeping it into the air), which we weren’t most pleased about.
Cut to maybe like 2 hours into our shift, our sick group decide we need a 5 minute break to just not be freezing cold anymore. One of the managers comes into the little cabin we’re in during this time, obviously they can see how shitty we all look. A couple of my coworkers mention to this manager after I’ve left about the possibility of going home as these really aren’t the conditions for them to be in and that they’re just standing around unable to do a lot of the tasks they’re being asked because it’s not safe to do so.
This manager then proceeded to tell my coworkers that they could only go home if they were willing to rework the remainder of their hours either into days they are already working or work on their days off instead (they were also offered the option to take tomorrow as their day off and work what was originally meant to be their day off instead). Obviously none of my coworkers went home.
Instead we all worked the hardest we could without causing ourselves more hurt for the rest of the day, being reprimanded by managers any time we took a few minutes to collect ourselves because ‘there’s not enough time left before opening for us to be lazing about anymore’. We also had a massive rant to the one manager who was being sympathetic towards us all as they didn’t think it was fair to be treating us like this, but couldn’t do anything to help as the deputy manager had already given us options. They were in agreement it was best to send us home now to have us get better for store opening than to let us work all week and all call in sick on Friday.
Cut to the end of the day; we’re exhausted, all we want to do is just go home, take some medicine, and crash out. One of our managers then informs us that we are working 8-5 tomorrow and will be until told otherwise (please note that up until this point we had been working 9-3 and had been getting sent home an hour or two early on occasion). One coworker questioned what shift they wanted him to do tomorrow as he was scheduled to work 9-2, the managers told him also 8-5. We are only scheduled to work 7.5 hour shifts for full time workers.
All of this has lead to us all questioning if we risk calling in sick tomorrow and swapping days off (spoiler alert! one day off isn’t going to magically make you not sick), or if we even still want to work for this company. Their sickness policy is absolutely dogshit at the best of times, but idk something about this doesn’t feel right at all.
Please can someone tell me that we’re not insane or entitled for being upset by this all?

Things Victor Hugo loves to remind us about characters in Les Misérables :
- How absolument strong and muscular Jean Valjean is
- Javert is a dog
- How big and monstrous madame Thénardier is
- Cosette is literally just a girl, the most girl to ever girl
- Marius is so absolutely unaware of everything
- Enjolras is the most beautiful Twink you'll ever see
- How obsessed Grantaire is with Enjolras
- Gavroche is the most savage kid ever
