just like, how robron demonstrates some of the best of what soap is capable of as a medium is honestly wild to me.

like, there's all the melodrama, scandal and helicopter crashes that make soap so fun and frothy! and also the well written, issue based storylines - aaron's self-harm, prison (mulitple times), one of the best depictions of csa aired on television.

they're also two of the most polarising and interesting ed characters of the previous decade. rob/andy/katie was a key draw of the mid-00's and aaron's coming out was the same in the late-00's. throwing them together in 2014 effectively remixes these two MASSIVE storylines giving us rob/andy/katie 2.0 and the aaron sexuality secret 2.0. like, of course it was going to go gangbusters!?!?

the other effect of this is that you're now like damn, i should really go back and watch rob/andy/katie 1.0 or aaron's coming out again! it gives new life to those older storylines!! then after 2016 and you find out that jack knew all along about robert's sexuality so now you want to go back even further and watch rob's childhood!! like, i don't understand how you go back and make 40 years of prior television ripe for rewatching with fresh eyes, but like, somehow robron does it?????

they also both come with long independently developed thematic histories on the show, which have literally unfolded over decades and bring real depth to their dynamic. as other posts have pointed out, exercising agency is such a massive part of aaron's story, he has so little control over his life, his relationships and even himself because he's so reactive. and then adding robert with his long history of patriarchal power plays and trying to control other people/situations and you have these two people who are both so good and also absolutely the worst for each other and its. so. so. so. delicious and satisfying to watch!!!!!!!!

they're also both from legacy families with connections to the village that run deep and are both historically antagonists, so as a result, so many villagers have a stake in the relationship which is great for drama and also makes the village feel more connected and authentic as opposed to siloed off into separate storylines.

just like, the mechanics of it all are so fascinating to meeeeee
