its melone
heres monster au melone & some of the concept sketches for his sigil. yes he actually looks like this .
this was supposed to be short and a quick summary but then i started saying things so... monster au loredump!! with a couple of visuals!!
hes a cambion (so half-human and half-demon) and for some reason people seem to think its his fault he is the kid of a demon as if he had a fuckin say in that?
hes actually not as bad as hes generally made out to be (he kinda wishes people would jump to conclusions a little less often when they hear hes a cambion because it's pretty annoying). I mean he's pretty strange and likes to weird people out but . He's not actually as bad as people assume.
I'd say most likely hes also got some real stress from his whole situation and some shit thats happened to him (almost definitely some of it is thanks to him being the kid of a demon). Whatever background / general circumstances he has, it's given him either some kind of trauma or some other various psychological-emotional issues that he probably tries to mask by his habit of being offputting just to mess with people. not totally sure what specifically is up with him but theres definitely a lot going on there that he would prefer not to discuss
but hes still a little bastard and i still want to hit him with a rolled up newspaper. di molto THIS, bitch *smacks him upside the head*
anyways,
physiology
Melone is actually the most unique in terms of known infernals in monster au insofar; unlike trish, diavolo, and abbacchio (kinda), Melone falls under the category of 'head-horned' and 'pencil-tailed' (or 'wire-tailed').
Most infernals seen in the Monster AU sorta resemble D&D style tieflings; Trish, Diavolo and Abbacchio are all considered face-horned and slope-tailed and are also wingless. Though Abbacchio is 'smooth-tailed' and Trish and Diavolo are 'fur-tailed', their construction is essentially the same.
Melone has a semblance to the more simplified / stylised pop media depictions of demons, yknow, like the little devil on the shoulder guy, little horns on the top of the head, thin pointy tail, tiny wings, etc. These kinds of demons do exist, but they are actually incredibly rare, on account of their physiological construction being pretty uhhh... not the best . (IM NOT CALLING YOU 'GOOD BOY' THIS BODY STRUCTURE IS SHIT!!!!!)
the wings are exclusively aesthetic, (yes they are actually they (unsurprisingly) can't actually even remotely support his weight (nature takes pity on these fuckers and usually these demons are able to semi-innately use minor levitation instead) and he can barely move them either, since they're barely connected to him if at all.
The horn placement doesn't really have an evolutionary bearing (face-horned infernals seem to be more common for some reason or another, but head-horned infernals aren't too rare); it's more just that the size of the horns that are seen on his specific breed/species are pretty much useless and seemingly have little to no function other than making hats hard to wear and getting in the way when they're trying to brush their hair.
his ears are pointed but short; whether this has to do with his hybridism or not isn't entirely clear, but they're observed to have a limited range of independent motion (he can move them somewhat). Demons with longer ears can also often achieve some level of independent motion; how much can vary, but generally, it ranges between only being able to twitch them to having either up-and-down motion or outward-inward motion, but never both. Which type of ear movement a demon has is often based on the natural position of the ears or the 'function' that the specific demon has.
Melone's ears, however, despite being shorter, have the same quality of hearing and a much wider range of motion, having both up-down and forward-backwards movement, likely owing to the muscles and cartilage that would have contributed to ear length—instead being structured to facilitate the expanded range of motion. or some shit
the construction of a pencil-tailed demon's tail is frail and lacks power, yet seems to be important for the flow of magic through their bodies. Unfortunately for them, though the tails can be somewhat prehensile, they are pretty easily chopped off due to the bones inside them being light and fragile and the tails themselves being very thin. Slope-tailed infernals, on the other hand, have much sturdier construction, thicker and stronger bones, more flesh to protect the bones, and some species also have tough scales.
magic
Melone has access to a range of magic as an infernal cryptian; almost every demon in human society has access to illusory magic out of necessity. His illusory magic is by default active on himself, but through magic development and practice, he can also use it beyond himself, though his illusory magic seems unusually (unusual for demons in general, anyway... not necessarily unusual for his kind) limited to only working on living things, people specifically.
He mostly keeps it confined to himself, but also often extends it to Ghiaccio since Ghiaccio isn't a magic user and has trouble with his partial transformations happening near-constantly (in reaction to his emotional states and sometimes just randomly). The auxiliary magic is pretty much the thing that best helps Ghiaccio with human passing. He hates his ailuranthropy and hates exhibiting it, so aside from just keeping Ghiaccio safe in general through helping with human-passing, it also makes the poor bastard feel a bit better since his ailuranthropy isn't showing.
Melone may push his luck and test Ghiaccio's (and Risotto's) patience with the use of a cheap laser pointer but at least he still cares. (the laser pointer 'prank' perpetuated by Melone and Formaggio irritates Risotto to the point where (to quote myself, from an earlier post:) the members of the team are explicitly told, sternly, by risotto, not to carry and/or use laser pointers around the hideout anymore, because the laser pointers’ literal only use is making Ghiaccio accidentally break the furniture and they frankly can’t afford it (risotto vc) "i do not care how fucking funny you think it is we don’t have the funds for the potential collateral")
As mentioned, Melone also has use of levitative abilities. which he naturally over-uses because it's fun and awesome to be able to freely float around with the exertion of little to no physical effort. he frequently hovers a bit and has a tendency to like. recline mid-air you know the sort. Every so often, if he's particularly tired, he can, somehow, fall asleep in mid-air.
in particular, due to his species / breed plus his demihumanity, he can't really use offensive magic—or things such as aurafire or flares—aside from using very weak projections in desperate situations but it tends to drain him quickly and doesn't do much damage.
regarding his concentration of mana / magic and its flow through him;
Like many inherently-magical creatures, Melone needs to have a proper manaflow for the sake of his own health.
mana and mana exhaustion monster au lore side tangent
For creatures that are magical in nature—I'm gonna call those magicrypts (magic cryptians) to make this a bit quicker—they rely on manaflow to live just as much as bloodflow and airflow—assuming they even need either of those. Actually, the reason that it's often hard to kill demons and magicrypt in general without utilising their weaknesses is that if they start suffering blood loss (asphyxiation, too, sometimes), they can supplement it with their manaflow, which keeps them alive despite exsanguination ( / asphyxiation ). Stand Users are also supernaturally vigorous which may have some relation to the flow of mana even for non-mage humans.
They are always, or almost always, circulating mana, and they must be able to replenish their supply of it so they don't run out. Most beings do not naturally produce it on their own, though, and instead gain it through mana absorption which has various methods / types. Often, creatures that need mana to survive have a way to stockpile / store it for later use, which facilitates the use of 'actual magic'—magic is kinda a synonym of mana, but can also mean magic that's 'used', castmagic (I don't like the term 'spell', it's too specific).
A magicrypt without mana storing capacity (very rare) has a lesser capacity for castmagic, unless they draw the mana for the casting directly from their environment which is incredibly hard to do, especially in such a short amount of time—and especially when the mana is converted directly into castmagic without pre-conversion in the body, wherein a magicrypt's manaflow naturally converts the inbound mana into the most efficient, practical, or usable form—so, casting magic like this has a high risk of backfire.
As a little piece of trivia, because it's a radiation of magical energy, if a magic-reliant monster suddenly loses too much and they can't replenish, they will drain their own aura into mana just to prolong their own survival for just a little while longer.
Melone has a typical construction that facilitates storing mana and building up an extra supply of it for use without disrupting his vital primary manaflow. If he ever were to run out of mana completely, Melone would most likely fall severely ill, and eventually die soon after his aura starts fading, if somehow he wasn't able to restore his manaflow before then.
It also should be noted—there is a minor caveat for someone such as Melone when it comes to mana exhaustion:
... as a Stand User, his soul's energy (which is, for all intents and purposes, a form of mana) is manifested as an entity—a Stand—and, consequently, Baby Face is essentially a mass of concentrated energy. If the body exhausts all mana, isn't replenishing, and has already drained its aura's mana as a last-ditch substitute... well, obviously, the body is gonna start pretty much straight-up metabolising the Stand into magical energy, which is incredibly hard to recover from, assuming the person even manages to survive after that point.
Popular to contrary belief, most demons probably have souls. Also all Stand Users have souls (unless in a very specific kind of special case) because their Stands 'are' their souls.
While having proper blood and oxygen flow/supply seems like it should mean he would be fine just surviving off of that, especially given his half-humanity—which does allow him to do this for a while—Melone still cannot survive without mana... at least, certainly not without likely feeling he'd rather be dead instead, because any survival past mana exhaustion is pretty agonising; and also... as stated, after total loss of manaflow and exhaustion of a Stand User's aura, the, like... magic 'respiratory system' instinctively starts absorbing the Stand and using it as mana, which... kind of destroys the psyche? like, that's basically the body obliterating its own soul. after that point youre just. fucked. but—basically, it's unlikely for anyone to survive mana exhaustion once it gets to the point of magically cannibalising their Stand (kinda like how you're fucked once rabies becomes symptomatic), and if they do, there's a strong chance they will never recover anyway.
Circumstances differ, but the conversion of the Stand into mana cannot be undone. Not really, anyway, but if a piece of the Stand remains in its original form, there's a slim chance it could be restored, though this would be hard; and most notably of all, the loss of the Stand is like the loss of the Soul, and a loss of the Soul, especially in this way, directly damages the psyche, which leaves the sufferer as basically a 'shell of their former selves'. While they may be able to function and live, their personality will be vastly different, if they have a detectable personality left at all.
back to talking about melone
For demons, or at least demons of Melone's type, their tails are (essentially) organs for mana intake of various sorts, and also sort of contain a mana 'artery' of sorts as all or most manaflow is "attached" to it. So if a demon of that sort were to lose their tail, they might be unable to replenish their manaflow, and would probably start 'bleeding' magic likely to the point of quick mana exhaustion and eventual death (as above).
Melone's tail, though it tends to mainly move either expressively or absentmindedly (like with most tailed monsters), often is seen pointed towards the ground or resting against it, which he claims is because that's how he collects magical energy.
It's actually not the most effective way of magic absorption for him, because of his species type. His demon half is most likely 'animasugent' (or maybe manasugent I haven't decided yet); so would primarily use 'sugent' absorption, or 'sapping'—basically, he's meant to drain energies from others and then convert them into his own manaflow—rather than the environmental absorption he claims to do. Sugent absorption is presumably what he (the demon part of him, rather) is cryptophysiologically 'designed' to perform. But he's honestly—despite what others' assumptions would likely have you believe—not a big fan of the 'traditional' method even when sugent absorption would be quicker and more effective for him, so he relies mostly on the environmental absorption and just does it more often to compensate.
Alternatively, he can also do lunar absorption—collecting magical energy from the moon, which is known to be a major source of magical energy for Earth as a whole. This pretty much just entails going outside at night and having access to the moonlight.
There's a very small problem to this method, and it's that Melone is one of the unfortunate (few? many? hard to say) who are susceptible to moonsickness. Effectively every cryptian and/or mage has a particular threshold for mana exposure tolerance. Moonsickness is, to put it simply, what happens when that threshold is passed in regards to the moon. It's a bit awkward because it's a very general term that could also refer to a few specific things, but generally, moonsickness is a 'magical' illness that occurs with overexposure to the moon and/or its magical energy.
It's because the moon and moonlight are arguably the most powerful sources of magical energy on Earth (it's something about the moon itself that makes the sunlight suddenly become magical upon being reflected off its surface—sunlight is not inherently magical in most ways that aren't related to Hamon) and have their own 'kind' of magical energy, lunar mana, and some people can have different tolerances for terrestrial mana vs lunar mana, which is why moonsickness is so prevalent. So a being who can use magic just fine, such as Melone, can still be pretty sensitive to the moon's energy.
The exact symptoms of moonsickness are kind of dependent, there seem to be different 'kinds' of moonsickness, or it affects people differently based on certain factors. It can affect the same person in different ways if the conditions are 'right'.
Some sufferers of moonsickness suffer it like an actual physical illness, usually experiencing nausea, terrible headaches, fever, congestion, etc. like, sometimes people just get the fucking flu from the moon.
Some sufferers have a sort of overflow upon being hypercharged from the moon's energy, and despite being too full of energy, they display the exact opposite; they suddenly become weak and fatigued, lose all their strength, and oftentimes, they briefly faint or collapse.
Some sufferers are afflicted with magical malfunction—either their abilities don't work, don't work properly, backfire, or just straight-up go haywire (this is common in children with magical inclinations).
Finally, some moonsick individuals slip into lunacy, a violent and/or incoherent state where the sufferer is likely to endanger themselves and others. Lunacy is most often seen in zooanthropes, but other cryptians can also suffer from it.
Melone's symptoms vary on the day. He can do lunar absorption if he's careful or finds a balance, but he generally stays out of moonlight. At my current concept, on the Full Moon, I figure he loses all magic ability (and the loss of power lingers into the following morning, probably, like a magic hangover) but Melone probably spends a good portion of the night making sure Ghiaccio isn't about to go insane anyway (the full moon seems to be the one time that he fully transforms, so he's usually in a lot of pain which naturally pisses him off) . not 100% on that tho
alright ill shut up now hope you enjoyed the side tangent ciao <3

hang on look out monster au la squadra concept post
ft. iltas oc zatta
//spoilers for vento aureo
formaggio: naphil / nephilim
(some sort of biblical sort of being but what they are isn't entirely clear from my research; some suggest theyre giants, some say half-angels, some say they're fallen angels, I went with both fallen angel and giant)
he uses little feet to adjust his size as desired but his actual height is 10' so assuming zatta does exist in monster au she hates him even more for having the audacity to be that tall
cats fucking hate him, and he keeps trying to pet ghiaccio who also hates him
he loves cats though
he has a broken, inverted halo
fucked up weird eyes that scare people
lots of naps and sometimes when he wakes up his eyes are fucked up and scary
started the laser pointer thing which was then perpetuated by melone so eberyone always blames him when furniture gets broken
weve all thought about killing you formaggio
annoying
doesnt use magic for anything useful
magic by nature but due to his 'fallen angel' type indivinity status he has less innate control so on the full moon he gets particularly moonsick and 'drinks it off' (does not work, does not help, makes everything worse)
illuso: mirror ghost
zatta is paranoid about mirrors in the la squadra hideout because of one accidental incident in the bathroom which was frankly a mortifying ordeal for the both of them and neither has mentioned it to the others
used to be human, hes pretty traumatised about being dead but hasnt explained how he died and doesn't like thinking about it
he cant read text when its written left to right anymore
mirrors in every room of the hideout except bedrooms where mirrors are kept covered and only uncovered in case of emergencies so sorbet is always seen standing out of view of mirrors because of the Incident
they actually have a really really awkward TV setup specifically devised so illuso can also watch TV
scared of gelato
one time zatta accidentally shattered all the mirrors in the hideout with depeche mode. this was inconvenient for illuso who said he himself actually shattered for a bit until there was a new mirror.
GO DIE PROSCIUTTO
zatta also hates the mirror cracking noise that happens around him
on full moons he actually becomes visible outside of the mirror but its fucked up and scary
prosciutto: lich
his anchor is probably his pendant
his jaw is partially exposed, since he's undead, his body isn't in the best shape.
hes not a real necromancer he doesn't know how to actually properly raise the dead and wont try (unless..?)
the rivalry with illuso is preeeettty one sided
wears perfume because he doesn't smell like rot, but he smells like, 'death'. it makes people subconsciously afraid of him, so he masks it.
his room also smells like perfume/air freshener. he has one of those automatic wall spray things.
his pillowcase is basically doused in cologne and is black because he either drools or bleeds all over it in his sleep because body preservation is a part of his morning routine.
his eyes dont really... see? not in the same way as bruno where hes blind, because he can still 'see', but his eyes dont follow movement anymore, and are very dull and blank.
on bad days he coughs up blood.
he dies every full moon and then reanimates in the morning and has to basically dose himself up with necromancy to regain a normal looking form
he's partially immune to his own stand due to either having no body heat or just due to the necromancy. his body doesn't function like it used to, but he still has blood flow.
pesci: human
i also had the idea that pesci was undead brought back by prosciutto but i didn't wanna directly state that
i basically relate him to my cousin who has a scooby doo special interest i think
instead of hooking / detecting just hearts, i actually changed beach boy a little - it hooks / detects auras, and can detect a lot from just that.
basically, instead of nearly killing himself buccellati doesn't evade the detection, he overwhelms it because of his super powerful divine eldritch angel aura and pesci is like WHAT THE FUCK????????? WHAT THE FUCK GET ME OUT OF HERE
either nothing happens to him on the full moon or he dies if exposed to moonlight and reanimates in the morning like prosciutto
he also detects as a normal human by aura and doesn't have corpse traits
what the fuck is going on
fishing :)
melone: cambion
( half-human, half-demon. most ppl automatically assume that it's always human x concubus but it's not but unfortunately in melones case his father was an concubus/incubus )
i already made a lorepost about this idiot and his impractical wings and tail
he gets really moody when people bring up his inhumanity but openly (when its safe) uses his abilities
never met his father, he thinks, anyway
never used sugent absorption because he doesn't want to turn out like his father (also why he treats baby face kinda like a son)
so hes actually a bit manastarved since concubi are more built for sugent absorption than they are for the environmental absorption he actually uses
circumstances of his conception were horrific. he was pretty much blamed for his own existence by everyone around him which may or may not have affected his mentality and traumatised him and shaped his worldview and motivated his actions. yknow. mightve had some bearing on the reflection of his soul.
doesn't excuse it but yknow. his mother didn't love him and he doesnt know if he even understands love
not as creepy about his stand and Women as he is in the anime, actually pretty clinical about the process and just a weirdo with innate vibes that make people uncomfortable because he's a Specific Kind Of Demon
concubi aren't actually inherently sexual, it's just that the ones that are heard about happen to have Done Things that give the whole subset a bad name.
It's true they feed off the energy of other Beings, and that can be done Sexually, but that doesn't make them inherently Averse To Consent. Concubi are physiologically built for sugent absorption and thats about it.
concubi are unfortunately very much magically wired and manaflow is as crucial as blood and airflow to someone like melone. passive environmental absorption and reactive / interactive absorption (absorbing energy from the interactions of people) provide enough to survive.
melone isnt his real name but he prefers it.
lets be clear im still hitting him over the head with a rolled up newspaper
ghiaccio: ailuranthrope
(ailura type, incomplete formshift subsect, pathomorphic variety, selkirk rex breed; blue and grey coat)
transgender?
his transformations are tied to his emotions which are very volatile, the partial formshifts mostly affecting his face, head, arms and tail
due to his hyperfrequent shift triggers, ghiaccio is essentially in constant or near constant pain as he keeps shifting and never enough to lose awareness.
his anger issues stem from his autistic ways and general mental illness but are made worse by his unending hell of a physiological state.
in a vicious cycle, thusly, his shifting is made worse when he shifts because he gets angrier.
basically has chronic pain. due to the most common formshifting locations, this typically manifests as mouth pain, unbearable migraines, back pain, and ear pain.
he always seems pretty bruised. he has incredibly frequent nosebleeds and tinnitus.
zatta empathises. still gets mad
habit of sitting in chairs very Wrong and usually kneel-sitting instead of normal sitting because of too many incidents sitting on his own tail
might have once been a normal human, and got Turned
he sheds
bad bad habit of biting and scratching himself so hes very very scarred up
often relies on melone's illusory magic to blend in
has tried to kill himself and it did not work
he only falls for the red dot at first but doesn't actually chase it, just throws himself at it and then his sense kicks in.
generally doesn't have any complete transformations, except for on the full moon. because it's the only time he fully shifts, he kinda goes fucking insane and goes into Beast Mode and it's up to others to keep him from doing that.
the spray bottle does not work
one of the rare few who can use his stand in full ailuromorph
i like to think he spends most of the white album ep in cat beast form
would kin izutsumi
autistic about linguistics (we know this)
still struggles with metaphor and idiomatic expression
hate
risotto: sanguisuge
tall
autistic
flat affect
quiet
drinks blood
eats blood in form of metal
doesnt understand a lot of things
does understand how to be quiet and scare people
fatherly air about him similar to buccellati but much scarier
keeps hitting head on door frames
me and the bad bitch i pulled by being magnetic
actually able to drink not only from people's bodies but also their auras
how do i preheat the oven
has basically no idea whats going on in normal contexts
sleeps completely prone face down stiff as a plank and with his eyes open

monster au fun facts (OOC)
diavolo keeps having to try to prevent doppio from summoning any more demons
Thanks to the monster hunter's guild, italy doesn't really have prominent lycanthrope packs.
I'm sure someone could figure out how to make a drug out of moondust and im sure it's very likely to fucking kill you
ghiaccio is mildly allergic to himself, at least according to melone
squalo can't swim in his land form
tiziano makes accessories out of his own moulted and preened feathers. this is actually a sphinx tradition!
melone never met his father but was raised with constant reminder that whoever he was, he was pretty horrible, and growing up in that 'shadow' made him swear to himself he'd never turn out like his father. this is why melone acts sort of 'fatherly' towards babyface and often avoids actually even touching most women
i dont know if pesci actually knows hes undead assuming we go with idea 2 about him. he does kinda black out every full moon but nobody including himself addresses this. he knows well and good that prosciutto is undead but he assumes he himself is a normal human and that the Necromancy Doses that prosciutto uses for their form upkeep is just a Magic thing he doesn't Understand
Prosciutto literally has no beef with illuso illuso just keeps calling him a fucking bitch for having the nerve to zombify himself when illuso didn't really have a choice in becoming a ghost
illuso appears if you say his name 3 times in a mirror but says he does this by choice.
melone is immediately drawn to the sound of his own name (as in 'melone', not his real name) but conversely implies this is involuntary
my two ideas with cioccolata (hang on give me a few seconds for the rage to pass) and secco were 1. cioccolata is his own frankensteinian creation and experiments with other cryptians, secco is a werewolf and 2. suggested by others, secco is the frankensteinian creation but honest to god he still gives me werewolf vibes.
Ghiaccio always curls up to sleep and everyone who has seen him do this wonders about his spinal health
i cant tell whats the funniest way to go with gelato and sorbet: 1. Gelato is human, Sorbet is nonhuman (perhaps was once human). Gelato is insane and just a monsterfucker because of course he is. 2. sorbet is a human, gelato is a fucked up monster thing. unfortunately, sorbet is into that. 3. werewolf vampire romance. 4. gelato is a demon yet his stand is still angeleyes and sorbet still calls him angelface. 5. gelato is a turned being of some kind and sorbet is the one who turned him and gelato voluntarily let him do this because he thought it was hot
i had a thought that Limbo (my OC) could work at libeccios as like. a waitress and thats why (other than her being with narancia) she's super close with the bucci gang
squalo knows nothing of capitalism and relies completely upon tiziano
babyface glitches when going up against giorno
Fugo might have magical lineage, but it's been surpressed
Pesci knows a lot about the other members of la squadra due to Beach Boy's ability; in the monster au, rather than just hooking hearts and stuff, Beach Boy also just goes right for the soul and hooks the aura. unlike mista pesci knows well and good that hes surrounded by nonhumans but like what do you want him to do about it
animals are pretty much naturally alarmed by Formaggio's presence. ghiaccio tends to fluff up when Formaggio is too close to him.
prosciutto's eyes don't follow movement but he can still see
gelato is afraid of seagulls, chickens and most fowlbirds. this isnt monster au specific i dont know why but i imagine gelato is STUPIDLY fearless but when a seagull comes after his sandwich or a bird starts strutting towards him a little too fast he starts screaming and grabs a knife
regardless of what he is, gelato bites without warning whenever he gets the impulse
Narancia isn't too careful with hiding his formshifting from Mista but as long as he doesn't take a lupine form mista just assumes narancias weird like that
The bucci gang 'have' a 'cat' that's named narancia. it's actually just narancia in a cat form that he takes when he wants to seek physical affection or just be a weirdo, but mista doesn't know that
squalo knows how to write but can't spell or read. so he doesnt actually know how to write he just knows how to copy the letters.
narancia WILL tear up the couch if you leave him alone too long
along with turning blood into metal objects, in monster au, metallica also works the other way, allowing risotto to turn iron into blood. he eats a very iron-heavy diet to get his fix of blood without needing to directly drink it.
i also had the idea that he can drink your blood through your aura
melone and ghiaccio possibly have known each other for a really long time, and assuming ghiaccio is a turned ailuranthrope, melone might have known him before he was Turned and helped console him after the Incident.
bruising is common in physiological shifters like narancia, ghiaccio and limbo. Narancia, unlike the other two, though, is in semi-complete control of the way his cells assemble, so he's able to un-bruise himself, though the spot is usually still a bit sore. since he's been able to formshift most of his life, he's used to it, and doesn't really react beyond his weird 'teething habits.
with limbo and ghiaccio, they're more unfortunate, and often look bruised upon shifting back from theriomorph. most zooanthropes have 'morph hangovers' when a night is particularly bad, but they often learn to cope with it and carry on with their normal lives regardless.
MANY cryptians experience moon hangovers after the full moon.
though many aquabound maricrypt don't have lungs, maricrypt like sirens are able to take in air for the sole function of mimicking human speech.
selkies retain human vocal chords in seal form, and can seaspeak as well, but have a "seal" accent
most seafolk are sleek and pretty (in their water forms, at least) and that's why many seafolk are mistakenly thought to be all-female, because a lot of the males look twinkish or have "breasts" (breast-like organs which serve non-breast-like functions, usually).
limbo and narancia developed a stupid ass greeting of barking at each other in human form. they blame this on the adhd. they also blame the fact that the barks are REALLY convincing on the adhd.
honestly soft machine arc is just fucking disrespectful
squalo used to sleep with his eyes open until tiziano got too freaked out by it

Monster AU - Hybridisation Fundamentals
This might be a relatively short one. There are few hybrids confirmed to speak of.
Generally, most hybrids would be what you'd expect—offspring of a monster (a.k.a. cryptian) and a human. Hybrids of this sort are typically referred to as 'half-(X)', with the human half being implied, since humans are more-or-less the dominant (or at least most prevalent) species in most places. Hybrid is the general term referring to any kind, but as a whole, hybrids are also sometimes called things like 'middies', 'halfies', 'combos', and, often more derogatorily, 'half-breeds', and 'amalgams'.
When there's a hybrid of more than two creatures, they can be referred to as 'part-(X)'.
In some cases, when only one parent's species is known / identified, I've used the suffix '-ling' to indicate being the offspring of something—e.g., the child of a demon with an unspecified other parent may be a Demonling or Dämonling. In theory, this could also be used for other similar situations, but I've only thus far used it for the aforementioned Dämonling. It's almost a synonym for 'cambion', but dämonling basically just means 'demon-spawn' in general; whereas a 'cambion' is defined as being a hybrid of specifically a demon and a human and no it's not specifically a(n) suc/incubus, it's just any human-demon offspring. This INCLUDES, but is not LIMITED to, individuals who are half concubus. and also can people PLEASE stop treating cambions like it's somehow their fault they were born ? yes even the concubi cambion. sure there are a lot of cases in which the circumstances of their existence are reprehensible but it's literally not their fault. like. they didn't fucking ask to be born??? and theyre not inherently dangerous so stop jumping to conclusions??
Anyway, hybrids between a human and cryptian (sometimes called 'humons', 'halfmen' (gender neutral), or 'the consequences of monsterfuckery') will typically inherit many traits and capabilities of their inhuman parent (in essence, human characteristics are much more likely to be 'recessive'). However, any powers they may attain are generally only about half as powerful, with their weaknesses also often being about halfway diminished. The way hybridisation manifests can vary on a case-by-case basis, but you are likely to find human-monster hybrids being more humanoid than their cryptian parent but still with many of the inhuman traits. Hybrids between two cryptians are much more varied, generally pretty rare between less humanoid monsters and can't be generalised; for the most part, though, they conceptually fall somewhere along the same lines as human-cryptian hybrids.
Genetics isn't my area of expertise, so explaining the relationship between human genes and monster genes in terms of dominance/recessiveness is pretty hard. Plus, it's foolish to generalise genetics through all cryptianity!
Hybrids also typically have a combined feel to their aura, integrating the metaphysical texture of both parents' auras. A cryptian's aura is usually significantly more potent than a human's, and a hybrid is usually somewhere in the middle. Being a Stand User will also affect one's aura.
There are, however, some hybrids that are irregular. or Giorno Giovanna.
The main irregularity is overruling or dual species, which cannot technically be just 'part' or 'half'. In particular, there aren't really any 'half-werewolves' or 'half-lycans' and so forth.
While lycanthropy (and other forms of zooanthropy) can be genetically inherited and lycanthropes can have children with non-humans as well as humans, lycanthropy is very complicated. A traditional lycanthrope (werewolf) is a human who turns into a wolf under the full moon, but that means that they are, technically, still a human (most of the time). In this sense, lycanthropy is moreso akin to a genetic mutation like albinism.
What I mean to say is, whilst 'lycanthrope' is technically its own classification of species (I need to establish the difference between different kinds, lest people keep calling them all werewolves—they're not all werewolves and werewolf logic does not apply to all lycanthropes), to be defined as a lycanthrope, the individual in question must be something else that transforms into a lycanthropic/lupomorphic form. All lycanthropes are also something else (same goes for other zooanthropes for their respective animals).
Lycanthropy is not exclusive to humans, though human lycanthropes are the most commonly known. The child of two human lycanthropes will also be human - and, bizarrely (though rarely, perhaps), might not inherit the lycanthropy, resulting in a normal human child. (I keep thinking about one dominant allele and one recessive allele but it just doesn't track).
Meanwhile, the child of a human (or any other) lycanthrope and an inhuman (whether another lycanthrope or not) will follow the same rules as a typical hybrid of their sort, and their species would be classified accordingly, but if they inherit the lycanthropy, they will be a lycanthrope as well no matter what. They will either be called a lycanthrope, or their other species can be used as a modifier before it, resulting in classifications such as 'demonic lycanthrope' or 'half-vampiric lycanthrope' (yes, contrary to some beliefs, it's not impossible for vampires to also be werewolves. The world just isn't ready for that talk I guess. There are so many kinds of sanguisuges and lycanthropes they are not all incompatible with each other).
And then there's Giorno. Giorno Giovanna. Infamously a triple hybrid (at least!) (come to think of it, it might not be the best idea to reveal his whole name) whose aura is - as a result - 'a terror' and 'atrocious'. Giorno is presumably part-human (with an infusion of ethereal Entity), but he's also unquestionably part sanguisuge (vampire) and, apparently, somehow... part... Gentry? I want to refer to this hybridisation, despite the human part, as a Faepyre, because it sounds cool however there is a chance i may get got for doing so. His aura is very intense and imposing due to the chaos. Being a hybrid of a vampire (you'd have to assume Sanguinarius saxeus, based on his parentage, but a lot of his traits seem 'traditional', whatever he is) and Gentry, he's quite incredibly powerful, but not as powerful as a being wholly of either kind would be. However, as aforementioned, he's blessed (figuratively, FIGURATIVELY) thusly with heavily diminished weaknesses, which is very lucky because a lot of traditional non-Italian-born vampire weaknesses seem to be just, like, being in Italy.
Being part-vampire comes with the desperate craving to drink blood but typically the lack of necessity to do so. He doesn't appear in silver-backed mirrors. Being part-Gentry comes with potential nearly beyond human comprehension, magic of influence, and Glamour... as well as a slight iron allergy... He has also claimed he is unable to be baptised due to 'medical reasons' and gets very offended if anyone asks him to clarify.
There are also 'pseudo-hybrids' as well, beings whose species are themselves a 'hybrid'. These are called 'chimera' or 'chimeric species'. For one example: Sphinxes (Tiziano Vecellio (will i get my ass kicked for putting his actual name here?) is a Sphinx & the only one I happen to have 'encountered' thus far).
Sphinxes are, mythologically, hybrid creatures with the bodies of lions, wings of raptors (most often eagles) and heads of humans, meaning the species as a whole is 'hybrid', but the individuals are not necessarily hybrid. Actually, when it comes to chimeras, there generally are no partial-chimeras. Especially when it comes to chimera with a human component. You don't really get 'half' of something when that something is already 'half'. In particular, the offspring of a human and a sphinx would be considered a full sphinx. There's a bit of a grey area on satyrs or fauns, and minotaurs have a complicated hybridisation, but if we're talking centaurs or some shit, you can't really go halfway with that. I guess it's sort of because the shape defines the species, or something like that.
(Also worth noting is that the term Sphinx may be more suited to indicate a family or genus than an actual species (this also applies to some other species, but taxonomy is a story for a different time); there are different (though not many) kinds of Sphinx species or subspecies with differing traits; without getting too far off track, Sphinxes as a collective over time seemed to trend towards being bipedal and more humanoid (hence Tiziano being more humanoid than leonine)).
Aquatic hybrids are actually surprisingly common, probably because it's remarkably easy for half-maricrypts to not know that they aren't fully human. Many seafolk hybrids are amphibicrypts—they have a land form and an aquatic / swim form. As they are typically born outside of the water (and unions between humans and seafolk are famously not very happy), they may live their entire lives in their land form. Unless fully submerged in water, there's generally nothing that would blatantly bring them to realise that they're amphibious, especially if their supernatural parentage is hidden from them (selkies and merrow have been known to fall victim to these behaviours as they are relatively easy to 'trap' on land). They often feel a pull towards the sea or the ocean, but in a lot of cases, they don't transform noticeably simply from being exposed to water; in these cases, it's often being submerged fully to where breathing oxygen is not an option—the body instinctively breathes through the gills (all fish-based seafolk have them!) and that generally pushes the body to transform. But how often does that happen? Fairly infrequently. Because it's easy for them to not know they're amphibicrypts, and, thus, they live their entire lives terrestrially, they're also more likely to have offspring with humans and pass the trait on to their offspring, so a lot of people could have genetically buried, watered-down (hah!) seafolk genes and not even know.

Fun fact: all demons have a unique ‘sigil’. By invoking a demon’s sigil, you invoke their Name, calling them forth. Knowing a Demon’s True Name may give someone power over them to an extent. Demons are known to wear incomplete variations of their sigils for “good luck”. If you want power over demons, good luck figuring out how to read their sigil out loud.

hang on look out monster au la squadra concept post
ft. iltas oc zatta
//spoilers for vento aureo
formaggio: naphil / nephilim
(ailura type, incomplete formshift subsect, pathomorphic variety, selkirk rex breed; blue and grey coat)
transgender?
his transformations are tied to his emotions which are very volatile, the partial formshifts mostly affecting his face, head, arms and tail
due to his hyperfrequent shift triggers, ghiaccio is essentially in constant or near constant pain as he keeps shifting and never enough to lose awareness.
his anger issues stem from his autistic ways and general mental illness but are made worse by his unending hell of a physiological state.
in a vicious cycle, thusly, his shifting is made worse when he shifts because he gets angrier.
basically has chronic pain. due to the most common formshifting locations, this typically manifests as mouth pain, unbearable migraines, back pain, and ear pain.
he always seems pretty bruised. he has incredibly frequent nosebleeds and tinnitus.
zatta empathises. still gets mad
habit of sitting in chairs very Wrong and usually kneel-sitting instead of normal sitting because of too many incidents sitting on his own tail
might have once been a normal human, and got Turned
he sheds
bad bad habit of biting and scratching himself so hes very very scarred up
often relies on melone's illusory magic to blend in
has tried to kill himself and it did not work
he only falls for the red dot at first but doesn't actually chase it, just throws himself at it and then his sense kicks in.
generally doesn't have any complete transformations, except for on the full moon. because it's the only time he fully shifts, he kinda goes fucking insane and goes into Beast Mode and it's up to others to keep him from doing that.
the spray bottle does not work
one of the rare few who can use his stand in full ailuromorph
i like to think he spends most of the white album ep in cat beast form
would kin izutsumi
autistic about linguistics (we know this)
still struggles with metaphor and idiomatic expression
hate
risotto: sanguisuge
tall
autistic
flat affect
quiet
drinks blood
eats blood in form of metal
doesnt understand a lot of things
does understand how to be quiet and scare people
fatherly air about him similar to buccellati but much scarier
keeps hitting head on door frames
me and the bad bitch i pulled by being magnetic
actually able to drink not only from people's bodies but also their auras
how do i preheat the oven
has basically no idea whats going on in normal contexts
sleeps completely prone face down stiff as a plank and with his eyes open

a few notes about wordage for the uninitiated:
'cryptian' is a synonym for 'monster' or 'inhuman'. i use the terms somewhat interchangeably. cryptian is my term and the basis for a lot of my other words
'maricrypt' is a more technical term for seafolk / seadwellers, and it's a shortening of marine cryptian. it refers to 'monsters' that are aquatic, generally
'amphicrypt' or 'amphibicrypt' is a term for 'monsters' who can live both in the water and on land, and often, it refers to cryptians who have both gills and lungs (like merrow) or selkies.
zooanthrope is a wide category, but almost all individuals within it exist with the same principles. when discussing things about lycanthropy, you can often assume the rules similarly apply to ailuranthropy, which is basically the cat version.
there are other kinds of zooanthropes with different animals, but mammals are the most common, and in particular, canines and felines (i've got one for each that i can study!! (un?)fortunately, i haven't found any actual werewolves or werecats. i've just found one lycan and one ailura. But they're both pretty different so at least theres that!)
'lupomorph' pretty much means 'wolf form' i just think it sounds cooler and more scientific, plus 'wolf form' kinda carries the implication that you're actually turning into a wolf and lycans generally take a semi-anthro form. Generally still meant to be on all fours but has some limited extra range of upper body movement. i feel like 'wolf form' doesnt do it justice
sometimes i may refer to lunacy, frenzy, and rampage. eventually ill finish my in-depth post either about lycanthropy or about the moon idk which first, maybe it'll be both at the same time. either way, until i can make that post and put it up, heres the short version: the moon is inherently magical and moonlight, due to being reflected off the moon (unlike sunlight) is magically charged. VERY magically charged. because of that there is such a thing as moon overexposure (for those sensitive to the magic), which, in lycanthropes especially, can lead to lunacy.
In a lunic state, a lycan generally loses their "sanity" and control of themselves, and they will often enter rampage, which essentially is a killing / feeding / attacking spree. Frenzy is a similar state to rampage, but it's generally entered by docile lycans (usually after getting a taste for blood) as opposed to lunic ones, so frenzy can often be reverted or pacified.
