Note
maybe a weirdly specific one, but do you have any books/authors you would recommend to someone who doesn't really read but wants to get into reading regularly?
You need a strategy. Here’s what I always do when I’m in a reading slump: I make sure to read at least one short story a day no matter what. Don’t try to tackle the entire anthology or collection at once. Just pick one random story and read it. The next day, choose another story from a different author. Keep doing this until you feel ready to tackle a longer work or finish the entire collection. That’s all.
Below are my favourite writers who wrote great short stories that everyone should check out :
- Ryunosuke Akutagawa
- Honoré de Balzac
- Mannu Bhandari
- Lucia Berlin
- Ismat Chughtai
- Rayji de Guia @alterbenjamin
- Shirley Jackson
- Sheridan Le Fanu
- Clarice Lispector
- Saadat Hasan Manto
- Guy de Maupassant
- Kenji Miyazawa
- Silvina Ocampo
- Premchand (Munshi Premchand)
- Saki (Hector Hugh Munro)
- Koji Suzuki
- Eudora Welty
#reading#this won't work for everyone#sometimes you need to get fixated on a musical#and slog through the entirity of Les Mis#but starting small is good advice

The Telltale games didn't have the hype of the Arkham series, maybe because they tried new character dynamics. This Penguin was a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne and had an equally traumatic experience. How their lives diverged makes a good project for #penguinweek. This had so much left to explore.

This is gonna come out wrong, but I actually really am drawn more to books that don’t have an encyclopedia of characters and family bloodlines going back fifty generations, and don’t flesh out every single aspect of the world-building down to the price of grain, and don’t require you to keep the wiki open so you can keep track of all the side stories, and don’t require extensive knowledge of “how this shit works in real life” so you can call out every instance where it was “unrealistic” and the author didn’t “do enough research” to make it believable
Sometimes you can just sit back and chill and read about a guy going on an adventure and falling in love, and that’s okay

I just love this set of panels, it shows us Jonathan Crane at his most vulnerable. He’s looking up at Batman, but he doesn’t SEE Batman. He sees the bullies who tormented him in his youth. You can feel the pain in his voice.
Is he sorry? Not by a long shot.
But he IS afraid.

STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE // S2E19 Judgment My father was a teacher. My mother, a biologist at the university. They encouraged me to take up the law. Now, all young people want to do is to take up weapons as soon as they can hold them. They're told there is honor in victory – any victory. What honor is there in a victory over a weaker opponent? Had Duras destroyed that ship, he would have been lauded as a hero of the Empire for murdering helpless refugees. We were a great society, not so long ago. When honor was earned through integrity and acts of true courage, not senseless bloodshed.
