Reposted from @nasa Scientists have long suspected Jupiter's moon, Europa, of having a massive ocean swirling around its rocky interior under its icy shell. New research may indicate why the icy shell rotates at a different rate than its interior. Using computer modeling, astronomers believe the water may be pushing the ice shell at different rates speeding up and slowing down the icy shell over time.
The ebb and flow of the ocean may also explain the geology seen on the moon's surface, creating cracks, ridges, and cliffs as seen here by our Juno spacecraft. Scientists hope to learn more about Europa's unique make-up with our Europa-Clipper set to launch in October 2024, which will study the moon in-depth.
Image description: Partially illuminated, Europa's surface is marred and cracked with brown-gray streaks creating patterns across its icy shell, which appears white and blue.

Reposted from @nasahubble Hubble has imaged most of the objects in the Messier catalog, which includes fascinating astronomical targets that can be observed from the northern hemisphere. You can even try to find them all for a #MessierMarathon in March's ideal viewing conditions! Over the next few days, we'll unveil new Hubble images of Messier objects so you can "stargaze" right from your screen no matter where you are. First up, this newly released Hubble image shows M55 – a loosely concentrated globular star cluster that sits about 20,000 light-years away. M55 is tricky to spot from the ground, and even in skies with low light pollution and viewed through binoculars, it will only appear as a round hazy patch. Hubble's view above Earth's atmosphere resolves individual stars within the cluster. This image only shows a portion of M55, but the whole cluster stretches about 100 light-years in diameter! Read more at the link in our bio. Image description: This image shows several stars shining against a black backdrop of space. The stars shine in hues of white, orange and blue, and some have four-pointed diffraction spikes. 🤩 . Pictured here is a replica of the famous "Red Strat" that David Gilmour used during the tour of their album "Division Bell". 🎸This tour was one of the most successful ever with almost 5.5 million spectators! Interestingly, many of David Gilmour's guitars at the exhibition are replicas because the musician sold most of his collection (123 guitars to be exact) to raise a record-breaking $21 million dollars to help fight climate change in 2019. Were you lucky enough to see the original version of this guitar in a show? 🤩 #TheirMortalRemains #PinkFloydMontreal #PinkFloyd#eugenelacroix1 @eugenelacroix1 #photography https://www.instagram.com/p/CqDM0IrI3BV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reposted from @nasa Cosmic Lighthouse ⛯ About 10,000 years ago, light from the explosion of a giant star arrived at Earth. This supernova left behind a dense object called a pulsar, which appears to brighten regularly as it spins, like a cosmic lighthouse beacon. This phenomenon is caused by winds of particles on the surface of the pulsar that emerge and travel near the speed of light, creating a chaotic hodgepodge of charged particles and magnetic fields that crash into surrounding gas. Using the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) to measure this pulsar’s polarization, which has to do with how electromagnetic waves are organized, scientists are getting an unprecedented understanding of how a cosmic object like a pulsar accelerates particles to high speeds. Image description: A pulsar wind nebula. A hazy blue halo in the center of the image reveals X-ray polarization data from IXPE. From the halo, a faint blue fuzzy line points to the upper right-hand corner, revealing a jet of high-energy particles shooting out from the pulsar at about half the speed of light. Pink X-ray "arcs" form the edges of a donut-shaped region around the blue halo, these arcs are where the pulsar wind shocks and accelerates high-energy particles. At the center of the colorful halo, a small white circle marks the location of the pulsar. Pink and purple hues washout the edges of the halo, representing data from @NASAChandraXray. In the background, the dark blackness of space dominates, interrupted by sprinkles of golden stars as captured by @NASAHubble. Reposted from @helmutnewtonfoundation The world-famous British actor Michael Cane turns 90 today, and we wish him all the best for the new decade! Michael Caine is especially known for his outstanding performances as a supporting actor. In recent films like „Batman - The Dark Knight“, „Inception“ or „Interstellar“. The old master of acting comes from a modest background and has worked his way up to the top. He began his career as an actor at an early age, right after his military service, and already in the 1980s he became an indispensable part of the Hollywood machine. His success is the result of decades of hard work, brilliant roles and memorable performances, for which he has received many awards, including several Oscars and Golden Globes. Caine is the only actor other beside Jack Nicholson to have made at least one film for which he was nominated for an Oscar in every decade between the 1960s and the 2000s. Altogether, Caine has worked as a film actor for over 60 years. In the early 1980s, #Newton photographed the already outstanding actor quite privately together with his wife in their Beverly Hills home. A fairly rare image of the actor, don’t you think? Reposted from @the.irving.penn.foundation Repost from @pacegallery: ——— For the first time in France, @franciscaines.deauville presents the entirety of @mep.paris's collection of photographs by Irving Penn, on view through May 28. - Composed of 109 works, this unique set traces the photographer's career from 1939 to 2007, bringing together many of his most emblematic images. The exhibition offers the public a glimpse, not only of Penn's immense formal creativity, but also his incredible talent for photography. Throughout his career, Penn paid the same attention to his portraits of celebrities and refined fashion photos as to his personal work, such as his still lifes of cigarette butts or crushed chewing gum. Each image is the result of a long process of reflection resulting in timeless compositions transposed through sophisticated printing techniques. - Learn more at the link in our bio. - Image: Irving Penn, "Balenciaga Mantle Coat (Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn), Paris," 1950. And I came down, and we just soaked it in on Monday morning... feeling a little guilty we weren't in a position to have the words to describe what we were seeing."⁣ ⁣ Image description: City lights dot Earth at night as hues of green from the aurora borealis sprawl out from Earth’s atmosphere.
