In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.

I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!

From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!

I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.

The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.

(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)

If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.

The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.

insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box

add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box

delete -> self explanatory

on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic

The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.

Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

N - “No need,” comes Lu Guang’s simple reply, voice fading as he heads down the hallway.

My only wips that are more or less 50% written are the ChangMu retelling and the Link Click Inception au... so here you go! (⁠｡⁠ﾉ⁠ω⁠＼⁠｡⁠)

A- And Changhe had not expected to survive that trial, had been determined to die there if need be, for Shijiu’s survival.

N- Not this time, he can't. Changhe has read the scrolls containing Dark River's history, has pieced together the things both said and deliberately left unsaid regarding the Soul Reaping Hall

G- ...given that they had only known each other for two months, and Lu Guang always kept his secrets close to his chest.

S- She had not questioned Lu Guang's sudden constant presence, happy that Cheng Xiaoshi seemed to have made a permanent friend...

T- The ugly feeling only continued to fester, eventually manifesting itself in Cheng Xiaoshi's builds, turning what could have been beautiful gothic cathedrals topped with massive archways and the tallest spires into barren deserts and clammy, waterlogged dungeons.

having all of Lu Guang's dives amount to Cheng Xiaoshi getting shot the exact. same. way. every time is BRUTAL. no wonder he got so happy when he received salt bread as a gift. just to know that the timeline is capable of that LITTLE amount of wiggle room must have been a huge win in Lu Guang's eyes.

i can't believe that when Lu Guang got stabbed *I* was cheering too! i'm like hooray!!! the timeline is different now!! we've made it to canon i'm so happy for pin cushion boy!! AND THEN CHENG XIAOSHI STILL DIED AKAJFKSJGD that truly gagged me you had me get my HOPES UP. you literally had lu guang being like "well this might as well happen" to getting STABBED. MULTIPLE TIMES

ngl the ending had me tearing up a little. to have Cheng Xiaoshi get shot in the tunnel but GET UP. it felt like an even bigger victory than how it was in the actual show! to have them fight together and Cheng Xiaoshi still be such a capable fighter and after the fight still be STANDING, after like 19 deaths!! listen you can't see it but i'm squished right in the middle of their hug at the end. i'm there too, also crying

there were many good lines in this fic but this one is the one that stood out the most to me: "No matter what he says, there is still blood on the floor and not in Cheng Xiaoshi’s body. No matter how he begs, there is light in the tunnel above his head and not in Cheng Xiaoshi’s eyes. No matter what he wants, his heart is still beating and Cheng Xiaoshi’s has stopped." lot of good repetition and figurative language. super evocative without having to be overly wordy. i'm upset i had to read it with mine own two eyes
