please please blushy eddie and buck trying to get him to blush bc he thinks it's so cute 😭
omg hi bestie ty for this i LOOOVE me some blushy eddie (if it was not obvious from my url lmao), please please enjoy this lil slice of sweetness!!
Buck does a double take.
"What— is that— are you blushing?"
Eddie splutters. "No, I'm not blushing," he denies, very firmly for a man whose cheeks are taking on a rapidly darkening shade of dusty rose. "I don't blush."
Buck narrows his eyes. Raises his brows. "Oh, but you do," he goads, and he can't keep the smile from dripping into the tease, "you are."
He makes the mistake of reaching out — the mesmerizing urge to feel the warmth of that rosy flush beneath his palm, his fingertips too strong to resist.
Eddie swats at his hand, and twists his torso away from Buck. "I'm not," he repeats, but even with his back to Buck, the stain of it still crawls across the nape of Eddie's neck. Colors the tips of his ears scarlet.
Grinning sharply, Buck redirects and pinches the shell of one. "Tell your ears that," he laughs.
Eddie yelps, and hunches forward, curling up like a bug. "Shut— shut up," he grumbles, embarrassed, and buries his face into his hands.
"Wait, wait, no," Buck pouts, clambering onto his knees so that he can shuffle forward on the sinking couch and drape himself over Eddie's back. His arms slip around either side of Eddie's neck, fingers closing around his wrists. "No, come on, don't hide! It's— Eddie, it's cute."
"Buck, oh my god."
"Eddie, come on!" Buck presses. "Please. Please let me see. Please."
Eddie groans, and sags back in an embarrassingly quick defeat, letting himself be caught against Buck's chest, in the cradle of his arms. He tips his chin up, his head falling onto Buck's shoulder, and, slowly, he peels his hands away from his face.
There he is.
Soft around the edges and still glowing gloriously pink. He's beautiful. So so beautiful.
Sometimes Buck can't even believe he gets to look at him. It feels too good to be his life.
"Happy?" Eddie grumbles, trying his damndest to frown, but his mouth just goes all pinched in the way it gets when he's clearly trying to hold back a smile.
Buck doesn't hold his back. He lets it spread across his cheeks, lets it stretch his mouth wide. He shifts, careful not to dislodge Eddie, but moves far enough back that he can draw his hands up. Can cup Eddie's face gently, between both palms. The skin is just as soft, just as warm as he'd hoped.
Their eyes catch, like this. Buck bent over Eddie, Eddie gazing moonily up.
Buck's smile goes lopsided. Eddie's breaks through. Bashful and sweet.
Buck's thumbs brush over the rosy red apples of those cheeks. Then, he dips down to smack a kiss to the left one. The right one. The bridge of Eddie's nose.
Mwah. Mwah. Mwah.
"Mm," Buck hums, relishing in the fresh bloom of crimson that spreads across Eddie's face, "very happy."

idk if i told the full story on here but i signed up for a research study where they were testing a new opioid, and it was supposed to be up to 5 injections increasing the dose to see what people could tolerate
i got the first dose and almost immediately fainted. they had to call in a whole medical team and it was a huge fucking deal
i was kicked out of the study and got a phone call later where they were supposed to tell me what the drug was, so i could avoid it in the future. they told me it was saline water. a placebo. i fainted from the placebo effect.
anyway, it's been a few months and i just got an email from the same department asking me to be a research participant in a new study: testing the effects of open-label placebo.
open label placebo is when the subjects and the researchers all know it's a placebo. they're testing the power of my mind. my power to imagine anything.
i like to think that they chose me for this specifically based on their past experience with me. "get the guy who fainted like a little bitch boy from saline water." anyway i just submitted all my info and i'm looking forward to getting started.

there's something really important in the way buck grieves in 8x16 that feels like it's being misunderstood. i keep seeing people say he was emotionless--that oliver himself gave us nothing--but i think that silence was the performance; that was the choice-- one made as protection.
last episode, we saw him collapse--on the ground wailing, can't hold himself up, can't draw a breath that doesn't feel like it's tearing him up inside. that was raw, unfiltered. that was what happens when the grief and disbelief hit before he had time to build the walls we see in this episode.
beyond an i love you, bobby's last words to buck were that the team was going to need him. and bobby's words have always carried a significant weight for buck, but these being the last? they clearly landed like a mission. a burden. a plea.
so what we get in 8x16 isn't a lack of emotion--its a man white-knuckling his way through unbearable loss because that's what he thinks he has to do in order to live up to what bobby asked of him. it's buck burying his own grief so deep he won't accidentally spill it on the people around him. it's him becoming that steady presence-- the one bobby said they need--even if it means locking away every part of himself. all the too-sharp edges of his own feelings, all the things he knows might take him under again.
because if he lets go for even a second? i truly think he worries he'll end up back on the ground again: helpless unable to fix or do anything.
oliver didn't give us 'nothing'. he gave us stillness. he gave us restraint. he's carefully calibrated, holding his breath, his posture, holding himself--because he knows if he slips, he might not come back from it. he's holding grief in his throat like it might choke him if he swallows wrong. he's trying to be what the team needs while neglecting what he needs. and it's devastating.
and it's all there if you look at him: the way buck's jaw clenches at times; minute changes to his expression before he smooths it over into careful neutrality; the way his every word feels deliberate and weighted, like he's rolled all them around in his mouth first before he speaks. nothing is effortless, everything is held.
it was heartbreaking to see. and i cant imagine how much more heartbreaking it will be when he finally breaks and lets go.

Controversial, I guess, but the stoicism was a deliberate acting choice. Buck made that comment about him being able to handle it bc of therapy and Maddie saw directly through it. Read the subtext. There’s a reason he was screaming his lungs out last episode but now everyone else is in tears and his face is just blank. Buck spent two weeks stress-baking, taking care of other people, looking out for chimney, and Maddie, and the rest of the team. Because that’s what he DOES. He keeps his hands busy, pushes through, holds himself together for the sake of everyone else until he can’t. No, that’s not a sustainable coping mechanism; no, therapy didn’t “fix” him.
He’s not fucking OKAY, but that’s gonna take a minute to catch up with him.

Idk man, I guess I'm open to the idea that the next two episodes will further explore the 118's grief, and maybe that will be good and I will enjoy those episodes, but like. I'm not sold on the idea that it's good storytelling to have the send-off episode be mostly NOT be about the 118's grief and instead to have it be mostly about a subplot that mainly serves to mock your audience. So even if the next two episodes deliver great emotional beats for Hen and Buck and Eddie, that doesn't change the fact that THIS episode still sucked.
