BACKSTORY - BEFORE FUSION

Shizuko Tategami is the middle sibling of Kyouya and Kakeru Tategami. Shizuko grew up looking up to her older brother, admiring his confidence and his skill in battle. The three siblings were tight as nails when they were younger, however circumstance pushed them apart.

Kakeru was recognized for his academic prowess, and left the country to study abroad when he was only ten years old. Shizuko found a love for music, becoming very talented in singing and playing guitar. Kyouya was always the strongest of them when it came to Beyblade, and this pattern continued into their teens. Their parents were often absent due to long hours working at their company. Kyouya craved admiration and attention, leading to the formation of his Face Hunter gang. Shizuko joined him as his right hand for a while, but things started to fall apart very quickly.

It started when Kyouya didn't come home one evening. Shizuko went to find him, becoming worried when Kyouya explained he fell asleep at the warehouses while training. Kyouya slowly stopped coming home at night all together, and Shizuko followed. The warehouses became more like a home than their actual house.

The next crack was when Kyouya started stealing people's beys and treating others like dirt. Shizuko was able to stop him at first, and even convinced him to return stolen beys, but Kyouya quickly stopped listening to him. With Kakeru out of the country and their parents constantly at work, Kyouya and Shizuko were alone to deal with their problems. Everything built up to an explosive fight between the two siblings. They fought about their parents, Kakeru, and the Face Hunters.

Shizuko accused Kyouya of being a bully and called him weak, pathetic. Kyouya retaliated by shouting Shizuko knew nothing about him, that Shizuko was just scared of being beaten down and abandoned. The final nail in the coffin was Kyouya screaming that Shizuko was dead to him and that he wishes they weren’t family at all. He regretted it as soon as he said it, but the damage had been done. Shizuko left that same night, and it would be over a year before the two saw each other again.

METAL FUSION

Shizuko first appears when Gingka and his friends overhear him playing music on the street. They complement his playing, and strike up a friendly conversation. When it's revealed Gingka recognizes Shizuko's last name, things turn a bit awkward. Shizuko doesn't explain what's wrong as she quickly packs up and leaves. He only tells them that she'll see them during the upcoming Survival tournament, and they part ways.

Kyouya notices Shizuko has signed up for the tournament, and immediately plans to find her. Both siblings had grown as people, and they deeply regretted their fight. The way Kyouya treated Shizuko haunted him every day, and Shizuko's anger had turned into sadness and longing. When the tournament starts, Kyouya sets off to find Shizuko, but Shizuko doesn't make it easy for him. The two do eventually cross paths and initiate a battle, having a conversation about the last time they saw each other. Kyouya was able to give a complete apology to Shizuko for everything; saying he didn't mean what he said, that Shizuko was right about him all along. When he asked if they could be family again, Shizuko said he still needed time to think. Kyouya wins the battle and says he'll wait as long as Shizuko needs. The two begin talking over text again.

Leading up to Battle Bladers, Shizuko has a lot of complicated feelings. She wants to forgive Kyouya and he wants things to go back to like they were when they were kids. She's not angry anymore, and misses her brother deeply. Shizuko makes up his mind to talk to Kyouya again when the tournament is over, but things don't go as planned. Shizuko watches Ryuga destroy Kyouya in battle, much to her absolute horror. He immediately feels crushing guilt about telling Kyouya he needed more time, and vows to avenge her brother. Shizuko does battle Ryuga, but suffers the same fate as Kyouya did. Upon waking up in the hospital, Shizuko reconciles with Kyouya and apologizes for everything. Kyouya tells her he should be the one who's sorry. The two talk for a long while, and by the end, their bond as a family has rekindled.

i think i've talked abt this before on discord but like, i don't Get tsubasa's dark power arc i think. i just... don't get how it pertains to tsubasa as a character. even after rewatching s1 i still don't get it. like, okay, we have a few different concepts to work with here.

how and why tsubasa got the dark power

the dark power as a desire for power and winning for the sake of winning

a secret third thing that is largely irrelevant to our discussion (and largely nonspecific to tsubasa or the dark power, though frankly the dark power is a very nonspecific thing anyways) but it exists and i can yap about if prompted (warning: i WILL get very off track)

when i first watched metal masters, my assumption was that tsubasa got the dark power because he was involved with dark nebula. this would sort of make sense but also not really, seeing as how he wasn't actually on their side. this interpretation is seemingly completely unintended, but i kind of prefer it to the actual explanation, which is that tsubasa... got it from fighting ryuga?? because the dark power is like covid but really selective i guess.

this brings us to the question of why tsubasa specifically, which is the big thing that's hanging over this whole arc for me.

so like, for tsubasa the dark power is all "GRAHHH i must WIN!!!!!" right? but that's... not relevant to tsubasa's character up to this point at all. his focus on things such as getting stronger and winning are generally at a pretty normal level generally, and while there are a couple possibilities here... both of them are quite clearly not the case.

first up, seemingly the most tsubasa ever cares about winning in s1 is when he's up against ryuga, which is reasonable given that he's a major threat. so, maybe frustration at not being able to stop him, right? the problem here is twofold. while certainly a lot would have been avoided if tsubasa was able to defeat ryuga before battle bladers, that fight is not the root of the dark power. instead it's the one during battle bladers, where kyoya was the only one to get obliterated by ryuga afterwards (and benkei i think but also the show doesn't count him as part of the Getting Beat By Ryuga Club)

secondly, this is not a situation tsubasa is put through in baku- by the time a threat like ryuga pops up again his arc is over and he gets basically written out of the rest of the season. and of course, as i said, the dark power is about winning for the sake of winning- not something tsubasa particularly cares about.

the second possibility i only thought about during my rewatch of s1 and frankly would've been an insane move for this show (albeit a potentially really interesting one)

i think if i were tsubasa and someone told me this only to find out later they were talking about their son i would have turned them into a pile of blood on the spot. of course this is quite clearly not what the writers were going for, because if it was we would've seen tsubasa lash out at ginga, and also i just don't think the writers would do this especially considering fury.

i kinda had more when i first started writing this post but i had to go eat dinner partway through writing it and forgot some of what i was gonna say, or atleast how to say it. oops.

oh absolutely!! here we go

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

First off I love his Masters design, it looks so cool. I love the half mask and peacock-esque coat. I also find the concepts Jack is based off of really interesting! Love an unhinged artist. I feel like he had so much potential as a villain and a character. Team Starbreaker as a whole is just such an intriguing cast of characters when you think about the circumstances they're in and what pushed them to become who they are in Metal Masters.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

Hmm. I'm putting him in Pokemon I think he would fit right in there. He would absolutely have a Smeargle and a Grafaiai.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

He gets featured often in gallery shows post Masters. I know we don't see much of Jack's art aside from the way he carves stadiums, but I think his favorite mediums are sculpting and oil painting. I think he's really good at painting animals specifically.

15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)

YAALON AND JACK ALWAYS we love oc/canon in this house. the two of them have a very important story to me. but also the fandom shipping chris and jack was very fun too i miss those guys.
