The Veil Nebula is a beautiful result of a supernova that occurred long ago in the past, where the expanding dhock wave from the supernova slammed into the surrounding interstellar gas, heating it up, exciting it and caused it to glow. Even now, the Veil is still ballooning outwards. The reason why the Veil Nebula looks the way it is is because we are viewing it edge-on. In this image, it is framed such that the Western Veil, also known as NGC6960, the “Finger of God” or the “Witch’s Broom” can be seen at the top part of the image, with the bright star 52 Cygni lighting the way. Below the dramatic and beautiful Western Veil is Pickering’s Triangle and the “Funnel”, much fainter patches of the Veil supernova remnant. The Pickering’s Triangle is a beautiful tangle of filaments and cavities that narrows to a small point, resembling a triangle with an extended point. Lastly there is NGC6974 and NGC6979 at the bottom left corner of the image. The Veil Nebula is a beautiful sight to behold in large telescopes visually with the aid of a filter such as a UHC or OIII filter, popping out with dimensionality and contrast. It is a target that benefits from long exposures and this image is made up of 10-minute subexposures totalling 3 hours. The Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex is a rather colourful deep sky object that can be found by looking at Antares in the night sky, the core of the Scorpius asterism, the heart of the scorpion, lighting the way with its beautiful reddish colour sparkling in the sky. Antares shown here as a bright yellow star in the yellowish portion of the complex. The complex itself lies some 460 light years away from Earth and is one of the nearest star forming region. M4 can be seen next to Antares and the beautiful dust lanes that can be seen converging to the colourful nebula shows a beautiful surprise at the left edge of the image, that of Jupiter, our beloved gas giant in our solar system. This was shot with a QHY294C with a Nikon 85mm f1.8D shot on an unknown aperture as I feel I may have nudged the aperture control while focusing 😅. The whole setup is mounted on a CEM25P and has a 50mm guidescope and zwo224mc guidecam. Shot with exposures of 180s. Here’s a closer look at the lagoon and Trifid nebula seen in the previous image, in this image, you can see Lagoon Nebula (M8), Trifid Nebula (M20) and IC 4685 (located on the far left). This is a 1hour integration as I ran into some software issues during the capture session and terminated early. Summer Milky Way, Sagittarius Region. Shot with Sony A7ii and Minolta 80-200 HS APO. It is always a sight to see in dark clear skies the milky way rising up and stretching across the sky from end to end across the zenith. A revisit of Cat’s Paw Nebula NGC6334, this time with a smaller fov with the qhy294c camera. This is one of my favourite objects in the night sky because it looks like a cat’s paw 🐾, hence the popular name of Cat’s Paw Nebula. A revisit to another beautiful deep sky object, the Lagoon Nebula, Messier 8, this time shot with a QHY294C instead of a7ii. The Lagoon Nebula is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation of Sagittarius. An eternity in a glance. This image contains numerous galaxies within Virgo and Coma Berenices. The more notable portion is the stretch of galaxies that looks ljke it is on a chain, known as the Markarian’s chain, although a few galaxies, nominally M84 and M86 are missing. I have elected to frame Makarian’s Chain with M88 and M87, with M88’s spiral structure somewhat visible and M87 being a supergiant elliptical galaxy that is one of the most massive galaxies in our local universe and is located near the center of the Virgo Cluster. Part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, which is found in the constellation of Orion, is a massive and one of the most active stellar forming regions visible in the night sky. Of note in this image is Barnard’s Loop (sh2-276), an emission nebula which covers 10 degrees in the sky. Thought to lie some 518 light years [ly] or 1434 ly away. Enclosed by it you can see the Horsehead (B33) and Flame Nebula (ngc2024), as well as the bright nebula (ic434) around B33, as well as the Orion Nebula (M42). Near the edge of the frame in the top right the witch head reflection nebula is also visible. The Flame, IC434 and Horsehead Nebula (NGC 2024 and B 33) are nebulas located in the constellation of Orion. The Flame Nebula is an emission nebula that lies some 900 to 1,500 light years away. One of the bright stars in the belt of orion, Alnitak can be seen separating the Flame Nebula, IC 434 and Horsehead Nebula. It is a hot blue supergiant with a visual magnitude of 2.0, making it visible with naked eyes even in bright urban areas. The Flame Nebula is energised by the strong ultraviolet light from Alnitak and glows as a result of the electrons and ionised hydrogen recombination. IC 434 is a bright emission nebula in which the notable Horsehead Nebula is silhouetted against. The Horsehead Nebula is a dark nebula that lies some 1,500 light years away and is quite identifiable due to its iconic horsehead like structure. Dark nebulae are interstellar clouds that is so dense such that it obscures the light from objects behind it. Important events such as the formation of stars takes place within it. This is shot in Singapore with a Sony a7ii and an STC Astro-Duo Narrowband Filter. The Rosette Nebula is a large spherical H II region that looks like a rose and is located in the constellation of Monoceros with a open cluster NGC 2244 within in that has been formed from the nebula, their intense radiation blasting away the gas surrounding them. It is some 5,000 light years away and is approximately 130 light years across. The Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) is a beautiful immense cloud of gas and dust where stars are being formed and die off. It is some 7,500 light years away in the constellation of Carina and found in the Carina-Sagittarius Arm of our Milky Way galaxy. Carina is always quite low in Singapore, reaching a maximum height of 29 degrees at culmination and is susceptible to clouds and the light dome that pervades Singapore’s night sky. This was captured on a relatively clear sky just before it culminates till the start of astronomical twilight. Shot with a7ii.
