Astronomers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope combined the capabilities of the telescope’s two cameras to create a never-before-seen view of a star-forming region in the Carina Nebula. Captured in infrared light by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), this combined image reveals previously invisible areas of star birth.

James Webb Space Telescope Captures Stunning Image of the Carina Nebula
The James Webb Space Telescope has captured a stunning image of the Carina Nebula, one of the largest and brightest nebulae in the sky. The image is the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the Carina Nebula ever taken, and it reveals previously unseen details of the region.
The Carina Nebula is a star-forming region located about 7,600 light-years from Earth. It is home to some of the most massive stars and hottest stellar nurseries in the Milky Way galaxy. The new image from the James Webb Space Telescope shows the Carina Nebula in unprecedented detail, revealing hundreds of previously unseen stars and dozens of new jets and outflows of gas and dust.
The image is also the first to show the Carina Nebula in infrared light at multiple wavelengths. This allows astronomers to study different regions of the nebula in more detail, and to learn more about the processes that are taking place there.
The James Webb Space Telescope is the most powerful telescope ever built, and it is already revolutionizing our understanding of the universe. This new image of the Carina Nebula is just a taste of what is to come in the years ahead.

I post a lot of stuff about the world and how unjust it is, but sometimes I forget to post anything about the nice things that still exist in the world. Like the beauty of nature. The wonders of science. All that awe-inspiring shit. @thescienceboutique, a longtime favorite maker frequently seen at @sowaboston, whipped together a bunch of new, gorgeous merch featuring the new James Webb Telescope images of galaxies and nebulae. I had to get this gorgeous barrette with the Carina Nebula on it, and when I saw this scrunchy and this gorgeous Druzy necklace, I had to get those too. If you’re a fan of anything from dinosaurs to molecules to tardigrades to Rosalind Franklin, they’ve got something for you. Science is beautiful and wondrous, and when the world seems like an unrelenting shitshow, science and nature remind us of all there is to fight for and take solace in. #science #jameswebbspacetelescope #carinanebula #localbusiness #womanownedbusiness #druzy #galaxies #spacephotography #accessories #prettythings #scienceisawesome #space #hairaccessories https://www.instagram.com/p/CgW7CR3uBeV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

These first images from the James Webb Space Telescope are just mindboggling. This is a description of the first posted image in this series ... It literally makes your jaw drop in wonder. “#COSMICCLIFFS” IN THE #CARINANEBULA (#NIRCAM IMAGE) The image is divided horizontally by an undulating line between a #cloudscape forming a #nebula along the bottom portion and a comparatively clear upper portion. Speckled across both portions is a starfield, showing innumerable stars of many sizes. The smallest of these are small, distant, and faint points of light. The largest of these appear larger, closer, brighter, and more fully resolved with 8-point diffraction spikes. The upper portion of the image is blueish, and has wispy translucent cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula below. The orangish cloudy formation in the bottom half varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The stars vary in color, the majority of which, have a blue or orange hue. The cloud-like structure of the nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys – an appearance very similar to a mountain range. Three long diffraction spikes from the top right edge of the image suggest the presence of a large star just out of view. What looks much like craggy mountains on a moonlit evening is actually the edge of a nearby, young, star-forming region #NGC3324 in the Carina Nebula. Captured in infrared light by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on #NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, this image reveals previously obscured areas of star birth. Called the Cosmic Cliffs, the region is actually the edge of a gigantic, gaseous cavity within NGC 3324, roughly 7,600 light-years away. The cavernous area has been carved from the nebula by the intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from extremely massive, hot, young stars located in the center of the bubble, above the area shown in this image. The high-energy radiation from these stars is sculpting the nebula’s wall by slowly eroding it away. Behind the curtain of dust and gas in these “Cosmic Cliffs” are previously hidden baby stars, now uncovered by Webb. We know — this is a show-stopper. The Eta Carina nebula visible just before sunrise. Like the Orion nebula Carina is very bright and can be seen with the naked eye even when the sky is not totally dark.
