life in jackson hole is slow, sometimes.

it’s a strange sense of vague normalcy in an otherwise infected world, it’s slow and sweet.

it’s sweet between joel’s arms in the chill of night, a familiar hum of his chest lulls you to sleep. his warmth hugs you tight, tricking your body to ease and your mind to rest. you drift off to some good dreams that night.

you tell him about them the morning after. he listens with intent, tracing small circles on your shoulder, eyes slightly droopy. you whisper about a lake that sparkled underneath the sun, how the wind felt on your skin, how real it felt.

“was I there too?” he mumbles.

you teasingly take a beat to respond. his brows furrow as he slightly jerks back to get a full look at you, biting back an undeniable smile.

of course he was there, beside the lake waving at you, slightly younger, almost untouched by the grime and burden of the dead. he looked happy.

sometimes, it’s lazy after patrol duties, with you two sprawled on the hardwood floor.

joel’s lips curl in concentration as he shakily applies a purple coat of glittery polish to your toenails.

he had grabbed it from a rundown shop during his morning patrol shift.

“i thought you’d like it,” he warily looks up at you, “you like it?”

your nod of approval washes off the slight uncertainty in his eyes, a crooked smile worming onto his lips. he leans in for a gentle peck on your forehead.

“y’know, purple was her favourite color.”

his eyes widen slightly, almost as if he’s shocked those words came out of him.

sarah.

he never mentions her by name. it slips from his mouth sometimes, only when he’s sleeping.

“she had great taste.” you return the kiss on his lips.

ellie challenges you to a duel, a snowfight duel.

of course, you oblige.

she’s grown more agile, stronger since her training started and oh man, you felt every ounce of strength with each snowball she sent blasting your way.

“ellie, i’m starting to think this is an attempt to murder me.” you huff out, feigning defeat by raising your arms.

joel looks on, a smile tugging on his lips. a chuckle escapes him when you tackle ellie to the ground.

life is funny sometimes in jackson hole too.

“get off me!” ellie yells in between laughs.

terror is all joel knows when you step out the gates.

he knows you can handle a simple hour long patrol, he ain’t doubting your ability. it’s the dead that scares him, the fungus that crawls round his mind.

It ain’t helping that ellie is your hunting buddy either. the impulsive and oddly fearless lot of you two together as a pair scares him more than an infected.

he cranes his neck to get a last glimpse of your horse trotting out the gate followed by ellie’s. the gates slam shut behind you two, a crippling sound that sends daggers up his legs.

“they’re gon’ be fine.” tommy’s voice cuts through the ringing in his head.

“I know.” joel huffs out, turning on his heel towards him.

tommy cocks his head amusingly, “then, quit looking like you needa take a shit.”

“fuck off.”

a familiar weight tucked onto his belt crackles, “joel, I already miss you.”

it’s you, he cracks a smile at that.

“all units, this is base. be advised—walkie-talkies are for emergency use only. repeat, emergency use only.” a monotonous voice blares a warning.

tommy chuckles, “you guys are gonna be stripped of your walkie-talkie privileges if you keep this up.”

you’re whimpering now.

joel has you hoisted up on his worktable, fingers tugging on your panties, dragging them hastily down your legs. each breath gets more laboured as his hand grazes against his lips. his fingers glisten with saliva, you’re already aching for touch, some friction, contact.

“joel,” you manage to breathe out, “please.” you grip onto his plaid, you’re pleading at this point.

he shushes you, leaning in impossibly closer. “I know, baby, i know..”

his fingers agonisingly trail up your upper thigh, his nose brushed against yours.

the ache hurts now, you burrow your head in his neck, biting your lip.

“fuck, baby you’re already wet.” he whispers as his fingers slide into your slit. your legs almost give way when he starts rubbing small circles on that ache.

“can i taste you?” it’s not a question, he’s already lifted his hand.

you moan at the sudden lack of contact, the fleeting relief from his fingers is gone.

he envelopes his fingers with his lips, groaning at the familiar taste of you.

you grip onto him tight, hoping it grounds you here down to jackson hole.

months pass by in jackson hole, it’s a bright summer day when you see joel cry for the first time.

he’s succumbed to the floor, a crumpled up mess on his knees. he clutches onto his chest as if his heart might fall out. it’s strange to witness him so vulnerable, stripped bare naked to his core as the grief pours out of him. he’s just used to pushing the pain down his body.

it’s gushing out of him now.

he’s weeping for his daughter, crying out for salvation.

you can’t even enter the room, you sink against the door onto the floor. faith was something you lost a long time ago yet you find yourself praying for joel.
