On May 19 Sgt. Michael Kunovich deemed him suspicious while outside the Super 8 motel parking lot. Aguilar Mendez was sitting down eating but started to walk away when the officer approached in his patrol vehicle. Kunovich began to question him, but Aguilar Mendez couldn't understand him or communicate well and repeated that he was sorry. That's when Kunovich decided to search him, and Aguilar Mendez resisted. Two other deputies arrived to assist in taking the 5-foot-4, 115-pound teen to the ground as Kunovich repeatedly stunned him with his taser, all seen on body-worn camera video. Aguilar Mendez can be heard screaming for his family and is seen trying to gain control of the taser as the officers note in the video. Toward the end of the 6-minute scuffle, the deputies saw that their handcuffed suspect had a small folding knife and disarmed him. Kunovich collapsed a short time later in medical distress and died at the hospital, the Sheriff's Office said. Aguilar Mendez, who came here from Guatemala, was staying with other farmworkers at the hotel. He is being detained without bail, which is the subject of another hearing as yet to be decided. I'm going to need you all to start spreading awareness about this case and sign the petition. I'm a 5'4 woman and I weigh more than him. He's only 18, indigenous and doesn't understand English nor Spanish really. I can't imagine how confused and scared he was. Tased 6 times and apologizing repeatedly and calling out for his family... he is not responsible for the police officer's death. The fact he's been held for 8 months without bail is disgusting.

September 2020

It’s the month of September in the year of the lockdown: 2020. I hummed to myself as I scrolled through the contacts on my phone. The task given to me was a mundane one: recruit interested volunteers for the Teacher’s Day event to be held shortly. I muttered to myself with a tinge of frustration, “Maybe they should’ve given this task to someone who has actually met the people in this school.”

Being fresh out of Mumbai and joining my new school in the lockdown, I’d never actually met any of my classmates. All they were to me were white names on a black screen in an Arial font. I didn’t particularly want to go through the trouble of reaching out and making new friends. Again. I had already done that song and dance twice in Mumbai, and in my four years there, I’d only picked up one worthwhile friend, Lakshanna "Shanna" Shetty. She was more than enough for me. I didn’t see the need to put myself through the unnecessary torture of awkward social interaction. Still, I dutifully scrolled through the contacts of the numbers I’d guessingly saved the names of.

I stopped for a moment at the last name, Kai. My finger hovered over the profile pic for a moment before I clicked on it. It was the Ikigai venn diagram of life. An intrigued smile tugged at my lips as I remembered Dad and my discussion on it a few days ago. They always say not to judge a book by its cover, but I already had a feeling that this person would be a kindred soul. I had to reach out to someone at some point. Why shouldn’t he be the first?

like i know netflix doesn't care, because they're all about new subscriptions over anything else, but do they not realize they've created a self-fulfilling prophecy? they cancel shows after 1 or 2 seasons because they didn't get the instant viewership they wanted, which makes people jaded and resolve not to watch new shows from them until it's finished, or at least has several seasons under its belt, which means that their new shows doesn't get the instant viewership they wanted

not shadow and bone being cancelled when the scripts are already written. a season is right there ready to be filmed and netflix are once again throwing it away to become another in a long list of wasted potential. netflix, maybe you should stop picking up book adaptations if you have zero long term plans for them because you cannot do them justice in two seasons max.
