Brock Genevro was born in the City of St. Mary’s in Pennsylvania to a relatively poor family, the middle child, and the only son of three children. His father was discharged medically from the Marines for mental health reasons, or, “Other Designated Physical and Mental Conditions Discharge”, and taught his son how to street fight since the age of 6, integrating the close-quarters combat fighting styles he learned in the service. As Brock got older, the lessons became more intense and abusive as the father continued to get more mentally unstable. By the age of 12, Brock’s mother moved out and took his sisters with her, leaving Brock behind with his father. His father soon after turned to drinking and, on occasion, opioid use. The “training” continued well into his teenage years, with Brock showing up to school sometimes with bruises he would attempt to keep covered. Brock started working odd jobs to help support him and his father. While in high school he met Joleen and the two began dating, until her family moved to St. Louis in their senior year. Brock was grief stricken and swore he would find her again. After graduation, Brock continued to work various jobs, but his father, between the alcohol and drugs, continued to get worse, and it became more difficult to cover their expenses. High school friends got him involved in selling marijuana and opioids, the very drugs that his father abused, to help make ends meet. Still determined to find Joleen and fed up with having to support his father, he left home on his 19th birthday for St. Louis.
Nearly a year after moving, he found Joleen still single, attending community college, and working in a coffee shop. The two quickly rekindled their love for one another and Joleen became pregnant with Brock’s child. Joleen’s parents didn’t approve of their relationship. They believed that Brock couldn’t provide for a family and encouraged Joleen to get an abortion. Brock, angry and desperate, started selling drugs again, this time transporting drugs across state lines. One of his routes took him to Oklahoma. The drug deal went wrong and Brock was left to fend for himself in a shootout with an Oklahoma State Trooper. Brock managed to kill the trooper and flee back to Missouri. One of the people involved in the drug deal was caught and blamed everything on Brock. Back in St. Louis, he visits Joleen at her parent’s home but is arrested before getting to the door. He puts up resistance but is eventually subdued with Joleen and her parents watching. Standing trial in Oklahoma, he was charged with a laundry list of offenses, but killing a state trooper and showing no remorse during trial was what encouraged the jury to recommend the death penalty as requested by the state prosecutor. At 21 years old, Brock was committed to the Oklahoma State Penitentiary. Joleen visited Brock once so that he could see his newborn daughter, but she never returned and the letters to him eventually stopped coming.
It is in prison that Brock’s powers became noticeable. While leaving the shower he was jumped by a group of inmates over an incident in the mess hall. His father’s training helped him fight back, but he realized that he felt none of the punches or kicks, or any pain afterwards. On another occasion, he was shanked on the way to his cell, but the attack only scratched him and failed to draw blood. Brock continued to work out in order to deter would be attackers, but over time he realized that he could feel no pain and his skin couldn’t be bruised and damaged. It’s been 15 years since Brock was put on death row, and the Oklahoma Department of Corrections is making final preparations for his execution by lethal injection.

Lukeni Kwilu: the Celestial Magus

Lukeni Kwilu was born in 1612 as a member of the royal House of Kwilu of the Kingdom of Kongo, an African kingdom located in west central Africa that occupied what is now, in whole or part, Angola, Cabinda, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Gabon. He was the son of the Duke of Mbamba, but his House did not have control of the throne.
Growing up, Lukeni enjoyed all the pleasures that children of royal families indulge themselves into, and he was somewhat shielded from the tensions brewing around him and his family. In 1622, the Kongo-Portuguese War took place, and the Kingdom of Kongo succeeded in driving back the Portuguese, but the newly elected king refused to push the army into the Portuguese territory and destroy whatever remained of their settlements. This allowed for factionalism and the return of the House of Kwilu to the throne. In 1632, Lukeni’s cousin, Alvaro IV was placed on the throne by Lukeni’s father but was only eleven years old. Trusted advisors began to manipulate the young king, and so Lukeni’s father marched on the capital to protect him.
While the Duke of Mbamba was away assisting his nephew, Lukeni was left behind and was lured away from the safety of home by a childhood friend. He was attacked by members of the royal House of Kimpanzu. Limestone dust was blown in his eyes, so that his attackers could find little resistance, permanently damaging his eyes. He was chained and dragged to the Portuguese settlements where hundreds of slaves were being gathered for shipment across the Atlantic Ocean. With Lukeni out of the way, the Duke of Mbamba would become distracted and the House of Kwilu would lose strength. Although the Duke was successful in restoring his nephew, Alvaro IV to the throne, Alvaro V of the House of Kimpanzu managed to poison him and ascend the throne. The House of Kimpanzu’s plans were eventually thwarted and Alvaro V was eventually killed himself and the House of Kinlaza, led by Alvaro VI in 1636, took over. With the loss of Lukeni and the eventual death of the Duke, the House of Kwilu never regained the power it had since its inception in 1567.
During the first leg of the trip across the Atlantic, Lukeni, grief stricken, was visited by Nafari, the Celestial Magus and a Trustee of the Realm of Zion. She rescued him from bondage, granted him the ability to see “all things that are hidden in the darkness”, and made him into one of the Celestial Magi. Lukeni chose to draw his power from the Shadow Realm, and now being aware of the end of his family’s dynasty, he retreated to the Shadow Realm and has lived there ever since.
As a Celestial Magus, Lukeni ages incredibly slow, but time also stands still in the several realms, so Lukeni has essentially not aged over the centuries. From within the Shadow Realm, Lukeni has also been able to see anything in any place he wishes. During the Iraq War, a young US Marine by the name of Dennis Washington was pinned down by enemy fire after rescuing fellow Marines. Since becoming a Magus, Lukeni had refused to interfere in the lives of those on Earth, and his anger from being betrayed by his own people still lingered. However, he felt great sympathy for Dennis and knew that without help, he would die. Lukeni pulled Dennis into the Shadow Realm and imbued him with the ability to move in and out of the realm whenever he wanted, as well as the ability to see at night. He taught Dennis the secrets of the Shadow Realm, and how not to fall victim to its trappings. Dennis Washington would eventually become Revenant, a member of the Delta Squadron. Today, Lukeni still stays within the Shadow Realm, coming out sparingly, and continues to look in on Dennis from time-to-time.

From the Desk of the Editor

As chief steward of a brand, and the primary person responsible for the future of a company, I don’t have the luxury, or the desire, to take sides on any political or religious issue, so I am extremely hesitant to speak to the current political and religious climates in our country (the United States), and possibly the climates in other countries around the world, but will share my thoughts nonetheless and keep it brief.
FarCorners Studios was originally founded to be a game changer. We wanted to be different from other comic book publishers in every way possible, and we wanted to appeal to a much broader audience than other imprints had ever done. We knew that in order to be different, we had to genuinely embrace all things that are different; that included a difference in opinions. As Editor-In-Chief I manage a lot of people from various walks of life that have a variety of opinions about many things we do. Because of their individual walk through life, everyone believes they are right in their opinion. I must 1) listen to it, 2) understand it, and 3) respect it. At no point am I obligated to agree with their opinions (luckily most times I do agree with them; I’ve put together a great team😬), and no matter what differences we may have we are reminded that we all have a common mission: the success of the company. The mission is much bigger than any one person or their individual opinion because the company’s success (or failure) now impacts all of us, regardless of said opinion.
We also knew that to appeal to a much broader audience, we had to have a story and characters that were representational and acceptable to a much broader audience. This part is very important because more often than not we look at others through our own lens. As creators, it’s easy for us to give physically diverse characters voices, actions, and beliefs we believe they should have. That’s not authentic, that’s not truly representational, and in many cases it is really not acceptable. In order to be truly representational and acceptable, we must understand the diversity that we wish to put into our work and give their respective voice, actions, and beliefs, and illustrate it in a way that they will find acceptable. That requires work … lots of work … and I know far too many creators who are not ready for that level of commitment. By no means is that a judgment, because for many it works and we all know our own limitations. However, FarCorners Studios, from its inception, has been committed to being as authentic as possible. That’s not to say we are going to get it right all the time, for we too are growing, but we value diversity and differences enough so, that we will continue to perfect ourselves so that we do get it right all the time.
As individuals, we must work hard to listen, to understand, and to respect each other’s different opinions, just as we would want done to our own. We live in the most culturally diverse country in the world, – which I personally believe is a strength – and if we are going to embrace the diversity (which I think we should), then we have to accept the diversity in all of its forms, including the diversity in opinions and beliefs, even if it runs counter to our own. We don’t have to agree, but we must remind ourselves of the mission and that it is bigger than any one individual or their opinion. For in the end, the country’s success (or failure) will impact all of us, regardless of the differences.
–Lincoln

FCS NEWS UPDATE
March 28-April 3, 2016
Welcome to the FCS Weekly News Update, I’m your host Cierra Cruickshank . . .

In National News: Spelman College, an all female historically black institution of higher education based in Atlanta, Georgia, was awakened before dawn by a three-alarm fire in one of the smaller, senior dormitories. Miraculously no one was hurt in the blaze, and everyone made it out before the fire became too intense. When asked what happened, the students claimed that the cause of the fire was one of their suitemates went up in flames, in what is called spontaneous human combustion. One of the students was the suitemate of the alleged victim. She states that she awoke to her suitemate crying out for help as the flames started to grow on the victim. “We tried everything to put the flames out,” she said, “but they continued to just appear on her body. As she panicked the fire got hotter and the flames got bigger.” Fire Chief, Gregory Cochran, was on scene said that he was happy that everyone made it out safely. As for the victim, Chief Cochran denies that anyone was engulfed in flames and that the students were probably just truly shaken up by the experience. There was no evidence of human remains found in the building. Students have been relocated to other dorms until repairs are completed.

In International News: United Nations Security Council convenes today in a special session to address growing tensions between Syria and Israel. In January, the Israeli government accused the Syrian government of conducting secret military exercises on the Israeli border. Syria denied such allegations. Israel now states that they have proof that Syria violated Resolution 2151, a UN Security Council resolution that was signed unanimously in 2014 to address the maintenance of international peace and security, in particular clandestined wars and the buildup of secret armies. The Syrian Ambassador to the UN stated that Israel is looking to place blame for the high profile disappearance of the daughter of the Minister of Strategic Affairs. The UN will decide if direct intervention is needed to help ease hostilities and prevent armed conflict.

GEHM of the Week
March 21-27, 2016

This week, Suzi Elezovic is a GEHM Among Us!
We honor our GEHM of the Week by sitting them down for a one-on-one conversation with the Editor-In-Chief, Lincoln Farquharson . . .
LF: Afternoon Suzi! You have been selected as our next GEHM of the Week! Hopefully this is a good time to chat.
SE: Oh great! Now is fine.
LF: Great! Where are you from? Where have you lived and where are you currently?
SE: I was born in the Bronx (New York) and then moved to Detroit (Michigan) when I was 4. When I was 5, we left Detroit and moved to Alexandria, Virginia. When I was 6, we moved to Brigantine, New Jersey, but we were in New York every weekend. We weren’t full time in New Jersey until 1997 when we moved to Absecon. In 2001, I moved back to New York to go to college in Queens (New York), and only spent two months in NJ. I moved back to NJ in 2005 after college.
LF: I have been to or lived in all of these places with the exception of Detroit.
SE: That’s awesome. I love Virginia, it’s so pretty.
LF: What school did you attend in Queens? What was your major?
SE: St. John’s College, for Secondary Education and Social Studies. Did you attend college?
LF: I went to three colleges actually: Atlantic Cape Community College in Atlantic City, NJ; New Jersey City University in Jersey City, NJ, and Rutgers University - Newark. I finally finished both my Bachelor’s in Business Management and my Master’s in Public Administration at Rutgers. We’ve both seemed to have lived a very transient life, in a lot of different places. For me it’s been one eye opening experience after another.
SE: Seriously (laugh). Not what I wanted but life doesn’t always take us down the path we expected to be on.
LF: You are speaking the truth with that one. So who is your favorite character in the FarCorners Universe?
SE: Stargazer. She can see anything, anywhere. I feel like the eyes are the most powerful part of our body because they are portals to who we are. She kicks ass (laugh).
LF: I love her too. She is a sexy character and Arturo really made her sexiness come alive. My favorite part about her would have to be the cape . . . and then the eyes (laugh).
SE: Yea, she’s pretty awesome.
LF: What do you tell others about FarCorners Studios?
SE: That they need to read it! It’s innovative, creative, and the artwork is ridiculously good. It has a great storyline and that it needs to be a nationwide hit. I would also love to see it on TV.
LF: Thank you so much for that. TV animation has always been our goal, from the beginning. This story is too big for comics and it kills us to have to give it out piecemeal for everyone like we are doing.
SE: It would be sick in animation!
LF: We think so too!
SE: It should be the next best thing . . . seriously.
LF: I wish others knew that (laugh).
SE: Where are you originally from and where do you live now?
LF: I’m originally from Atlantic City, NJ, born and raised. I currently live in Irvington, NJ, a small town outside of Newark.
SE: What do you think brought you to where you are in life now?
LF: So many things brought me to this point, and never in all the years that are available to me would I have imagined myself here, doing this. This was never my dream, never my goal. I have had so many down moments, but facing them head on, learning from them, and being a critical forward thinker, has allowed me to rise above and put me where I am. I also couldn't have done this without some really great people along the way. They have truly carried me through the fires and I owe so much to them.
SE: That is awesome. Life is never what we think it’s going to be so I always like knowing how people got to where they are right now. I am very proud of you.
LF: Thank you! Thank you so much, Suzi. People like you keep us motivated. Even in this business there are plenty of down moments, moments when you ask yourself was this the right choice. So thank you.
SE: You are so welcome, Lincoln
