The older I get the more I admire people who are earnestly, genuinely into whatever their thing is. I know it sounds like an annoying cliche but unless you're being cruel or hurtful there is really no need to be normal about things. I always thought it was just a sort of dampness (salpeter is known to accumulate in dark damp parts of structures and caves in general, including where wine is aged but mostly stable. I checked and it is funny to see different "origins of salpeter" in wikipedia depending the selected language. More of a "a, b, c" in English and "b, c, d" in French, so not contradictory, more complementary).

Because yes, salpeter + charcoal + sulfur (Chade's beloved blue fire) would make the gun powder.

But this powder seems a little more powerful than gunpowder and more unstable considering the tests he and Rosemary make later in the books. So a big unstable explosive.

You know what is one of the main ingredient for TNT ? Amonnium nitrate.

I’ve been reading about gunpowder recently. I think the container had saltpeter in it … Which is derived from dried up pee. It was probably pee. Chade stored some powder in a thing he had peed in.
