    𝘩𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝘩𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔𝘩 𝑡𝘩𝑒 𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑡 𝑎𝑡 𝑑𝑒𝑓𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛,     not needing prodigious sight to unearth the fact that boruto was keeping something presumably important to himself.    it does little to quell the tumult of worry raging within the genius,     though he ultimately decides to let it go.     everyone was entitled to a few secrets,     heaven knows he had more than his share at his nephew's age.     he lets trust speak louder than any words intent on pressing on the topic would     ⸻     comforted in the certainty that boruto would make the correct choices,     and that he would be there to catch him after any mistake.     

a rare smile eases itself on luminous features,    taking great joy in the jubilant spirit the younger exudes.     it was reminiscent of that of his father's yet simultaneously the boy's own,     a natural progression of the former's unbreakable confidence refined and supported by the skill boruto had already amassed.     it cultivates the same blind belief in neji naruto's had previously inspired,     moving him to do something as silly as wrap his own pinky finger around his nephew's proffered digit to seal the promise.     ‵    i promise i'll remember you no matter what. i want you to promise something, too, boruto ... that you'll count on me should you ever need to. it's good to do things on your own, but never doubt you have my help the moment you need it.   ʹ     

                                   His attention now focused on his Uncle, a soft smile graced his whiskered features. It was as he was showing such a soft emotion that there was also an echo of discomfort within that softness - an afterimage of his mother reflected next to his side.  Those brilliant cerulean-colored eyes were shut and hands folded into his lap but not without clenching the marked one, tightly. ❛ Heh.        SKIN   NUMBS      instantly  where  the  frozen  blade  dents  his  neck;    loose  enough  that  he  may  yet  speak  but  pressed  so  flush  against  thin  skin  that  a  flick  of  the  wrist  would  draw  red.      it  smothers  the  arrogant  scoff  Haku’s  threat  evoked,   morphing  in  its  stead  a  meager  huff.      despite  the  chill  of  their  presence,    Neji’s  veins  boil  to  a  scorch  with  his  hate.     perhaps  the  simple   reminder  that   Haku’s  skill  rivaled,   matched,   and,  at  times,  far  outweighed  his  own  infuriated  him  more  than  the  reality  of  this  ambush  or   any  potential  attack  ever  could.

Haku’s  existence  negated  his  own.     a   great  disservice  had  been  done  to  them  the  moment  their  praises  had  first  been  sung,    snatching  from  their  small  palms  the  possibility  of  a  fruitful  collaboration  and  feeding  their  hearts  with  a  consuming  fixation  on  being  the  very  best.   

chagrined,    Neji  warms  his  fingertips  with  a  concentration  of  chakra.   it  feels  like  centuries  have  passed  them  in  this  position;    Haku  waiting  for  a  response,   any  excuse  to  sheathe  their  blade  into  marble  skin,   and  Neji  pretending  not  to  care  that  his  life  was  now  in  mortal  peril.   seconds   decay  and  just  as  he  feels  Haku’s  patience  waning,   Neji  throws  his  elbow  back  into  their  abdomen  and  takes  the  few  seconds  of  them  staggering  back  to  grip  their  weaponized  wrist  and  press  his  charged  digits  against the  length  of  it;   effectively  burning  shut  temporarily  the  tenketsu  therein.   

perhaps  his  will  to  compete  overwhelmed  the  rational  instinct  to  survive  as  he  discards  the  idea  of  causing  the  other  permanent  damage  in  favor  of  seeing  what  they  would  do  next.    a  spiteful  grin  slants  implacable   lips  as  he  puts  enough  distance  between  them  to  start  a  proper  duel.         “  yes,  i  should  think  so.       my  luck  …  and  your  misfortune.  ”
