How the fuck did Nephrology escape from being one of the areas known for attracting crazy people. These guys are insane. What the fuck.

People talk about the surprise albums from people like Taylor Swift or Beyoncé that drop with zero warning but I have just been existing in this world where every album I've ever heard in my life has been a surprise album because I didn't know that musicians had schedules that we could see

honestly really sexy of tumblr to keep follower numbers private. how many people are following me? you'll never know unless I tell you. maybe it's a million, or a thousand, or five, or maybe it's just you. maybe you're the only one here, all by yourself, unable to see if there's anyone standing next to you.
and you'd never know, because status here is based on opinion and not numbers; how popular you think someone is is a vibes-only calculation, and besides the chronological algorithms-optional feed, it's genuinely the best thing tumblr's ever done.

My answer on the IRL vs. online poll is deeply influenced by the fact that people on this website know that I write elf fanfiction and people IRL only know that I’m a medical doctor

i think an uncomfortable truth is that there is an inherent arrogance one has to overcome after spending too much time alone, which is not so obvious when it's forced (i.e. through ostracism) because the assumption is that someone who has been ostracized is more likely to lack confidence and thinks poorly of themselves. but then there's this dance between victimhood and low self-esteem yet also subconsciously believing that your own view or daily decisions are "correct" or "better" because you've never had anyone tell you otherwise, because you've been alone. and in addition have gotten used to being extremely independent and considering others' input doesn't even occur to you. so when others DO provide feedback, it's almost jarring, like you don't have a behavioral pathway with which to respond or receive the feedback so you just respond with irritation because your system is confused

The Norwegian translation of "Baggins" is "Lommelun", which approximately translates to "warm/cozy pocket" and I think that's a very adorable Hobbit name.

THE ONLY THING OUR CIVILISATION CAN EVER LEARN FROM YOURS IS THAT WHEN OUR BACKS ARE TO THE WALL AND OUR TOWERS ARE FALLING ALL AROUND US AND WE ARE WATCHING OURSELVES BURN WE RARELY BECOME HEROES.

no obligation to answer but what’s your residency in? friend of mine in med school is freaking out abt her options (she’s thinking of emergency) it would be great to hear what you think of yours !!
Cardiology (well, internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship, to translate it into USAmerican terms), which is a great option if you’re a huge nerd about cardiology and a terrible option if you’re not.
Basically cardiology is for people who like music and physics and dumb jokes and quick surgical procedures and long discussions about the ESC Guidelines.
I’m not saying you have to be an obsessive perfectionist to become a cardiologist, but it sure as fuck helps. It’s also a subspecialty where you’re allowed to be a little bit neurodivergent, as a treat.
This is neither an endorsement nor a condemnation of the subspecialty, it’s just the reality, though YMMV.
I don’t know how far along in med school your friend is, but based on my experience, everyone in med school is a little bit freaked out about their options and the fear of making the wrong choice, until they graduate, at which point most people figure out what’s right through a combination of circumstances and personal interest in a subject.
Remember, it’s better to try your dream specialty and figure out later that it wasn’t for you after all, than to spend a whole career regretting the fact that you never tried it.

Another contributing factor is that Lymond fundamentally believes that he doesn’t deserve happiness, but he’d rather be miserable on his own terms than on someone else’s, therefore entering into potentially traumatising situations with a smile on his face because at least he’s doing it of his own volition, as if that makes it okay, somehow
Over halfway through the Lymond Chronicles, and it’s getting really hard to tell which of the things happening to Lymond constitute Enrichment In The Enclosure and which ones are Deeply Traumatic Experiences, and frankly I don’t even think he knows that himself, which only contributes to the problem

Things I have been yelled at for:
- assuming I’m not good enough for the residency program I’m in
- apologising
- taking on a full clinical workload on days when I also have to attend meetings
- helping the interns with their paperwork in addition to my own work
Things I’ve gotten a pat on the back for:
- leaving work 5-10 minutes before my workday officially ends
- having lunch somewhere that’s not at my desk
- delegating tasks to others
I do miss seeing your takes on literature! Hope the residency is going well and that you’re not too overwhelmed
Thanks :) Hopefully I’ll get back to the literature posting soon.
That being said, residency is great. I love doing my job, and I get along surprisingly well with the attendings who are known for having high standards, so despite my subspecialty being somewhat competitive, it doesn’t feel that way.
