Funnily enough, I got recommended Jade Route a while back with CallieDirk being a selling point. I unfortunately keep forgetting to read it ^_^; I’ve heard from multiple people that it’s really good (and something that I'd really enjoy), so it’s definitely on my radar. Once I wrap up Pesterquest, I’m going to make it my next priority for sure. Thank you!!
(Ironic) DirkJade rant
(4/14/25) I feel like the true core of DirkJade are their themes of isolation. Walk with me here. Not the “I’m alone in the void” kind (CallieRoxy is unironically a really interesting example of this specifically!!), but the more subtle kind: Being surrounded by people who think they understand you, when really, they’re projecting something onto you that isn't quite real. This happens to other characters too, obviously--Most notably Jake who I feel is incredibly relevant to DirkJade's relationship, and I'd like to dissect that too--but for those 2 it's kind of in the exact opposite ways? Jade is usually seen as someone who needs to be protected or supported. She’s sweet, Spacey (laugh now), emotionally warm. Meanwhile, Dirk is the opposite: he’s positioned as someone others rely on. He’s the guy with the plan, the one who’s supposed to have everything under control. These are both curated versions of themselves that they built up for the express purpose of hiding who they are.
"Just ship DirkJake/DaveJade, it's like DirkJade but better" the appeal of DirkJade, at least for me, is the fact that it's a rudimentary version of both Dirk's dynamic with Jake and Jade's dynamic with Dave. I like the fact that they have almost no basis for an actual relationship outside of observing the similarities between their respective family members. It doesn’t have the emotional payoff baked in—you’d have to build it from the ground up, and that’s what makes it fun. I imagine it would start kind of awkward. They’d probably keep measuring each other against the people they’re used to being around. “Jake would’ve laughed at that,” “Dave would’ve handled this differently”, etc. But over time, they’d start seeing each other for who they actually are. That kind of growth would be super slow, but super rewarding. Especially since both Dirk and Jade have a tendency to pull back the metaphorical (and sometimes literal) masks of the people they care about. They’d eventually start doing that for each other, which is where the real emotional weight would come from. My head automatically converts this to post-canon with ult Dirk & Calldie (Alt Callie + Jade) but that’s a more intense dynamic so I think most people would prefer pre-timeline-split DirkJade.
Anyways yeah I just wanted to add some of my thoughts. You don’t have to like them romantically (you do) but I think more people should (are required to) explore the facets of their hypothetical dynamic.

Unlike most chemists, I am not a chemist.
#🥼 = Blog posts, asks, shit like that.
Sideblog purely to archive my non art-slop (N.A.S). I don’t necessarily agree with everything I post--either because my views have changed or because I’m simplifying things for the sake of clarity.
Lately, I’ve started including a few obvious exceptions when they come to mind, but in general, about 90% of my posts are meant to be taken as isolated drabbles, not comprehensive takes.
He/him, minor (older than 14).
I am a staunch post canon fan & analyzer. Specifically an Epilogues glazer, though I also enjoy HS:BC.
I'm slowly finishing Pesterquest (I'll probably write about it when I'm done but don't hold me to that). I have not touched Hiveswap, and I have no plans on finishing Friendsim anytime soon.

Candy Jake deserves respect
(Written 3/17/25) I see a lot of people misunderstand Jake's motivations on pages 681-685, and subsequently call him useless for being incompetent at killing Jane. It's important to recognize that Jake could've easily snuck up on Jane and low diff'd her--but he didn't, because he's Jake English. Despite everything that she put him through (re: the entirety of Candy) he still loves her *as a friend*. He so desperately wants for her to just go back to how she was when they were kids but he simultaneously acknowledges the fact that she's damaging everyone around them and needs to be stopped.
It's also important to note how big of a turning point Jake deciding to shoot Jane is for his character. Like, he stayed in a marriage with her for 15 years. He let Gamzee raise his son for him. He avoided any sort of confrontation prior to this because he didn't want things to turn out badly. And yet, even though he failed to kill Jane in one shot, he still locked in during [S] 8r8k which is such a crazy development from HS1? Like holy shit? My goat followed through?
Anyways yeah tl;dr Jake is cool and not useless.
(4/1/25 amendment, tangentially related to the first part)
Brain ghost Dirk having Jake's eye color means literally everything to me. Even though brain ghost Dirk repeated over and over again that he was just a facet of Jake's coping mechanisms I don't think that really sunk in until the reveal.
Can you imagine how he felt when he saw BGD's eyes and realized that he had been relying on himself the entire time? That he doesn't need other people to harness his power from him, and that he can truly do things by himself if he tries. And how terrifying it must've been to reckon with the fact that he is his own person, and that he doesn't owe others anything but his best self. It's awesome I think.
I acknowledge the fact that none of this means anything by itself, but I'm adding onto this specific rant for a reason. People put too much emphasis on him shooting Jane, when in reality I think the most important part of that scene was him getting up after failing to kill her. Not to slander HS1 Jake but he Would Not Have done that.
#homestuck beyond canon#homestuck#homestuck analysis#I actually don't really like this one. It just felt like the most straightforward thing to post first.#The amendment is kind of useless and says the same thing as the original rant.#It was purely just an esoteric April Fools shitpost fyi.#Like the bit was that this random HStwt member had genuine insight into HSBC.#Jake English#Brain Ghost Dirk#homestuck epilogues
