Aaaanyway, this is one of the things I’ve been doing when I wasn’t dicking around on the web and stuff. Yes, its a ship. No, I don’t think its canon, I just think they have a lot of chemistry if you think about it. And I’m not going to bash on the DirkJake ship, really I’m not. I just prefer this ship over that I guess? Plus I like a platonic-sweet DirkJake ship more than a romantic one.

(Ironic) DirkJade rant

(4/14/25) I feel like the true core of DirkJade are their themes of isolation. Walk with me here. Not the “I’m alone in the void” kind (CallieRoxy is unironically a really interesting example of this specifically!!), but the more subtle kind: Being surrounded by people who think they understand you, when really, they’re projecting something onto you that isn't quite real. This happens to other characters too, obviously--Most notably Jake who I feel is incredibly relevant to DirkJade's relationship, and I'd like to dissect that too--but for those 2 it's kind of in the exact opposite ways? Jade is usually seen as someone who needs to be protected or supported. She’s sweet, Spacey (laugh now), emotionally warm. Meanwhile, Dirk is the opposite: he’s positioned as someone others rely on. He’s the guy with the plan, the one who’s supposed to have everything under control. These are both curated versions of themselves that they built up for the express purpose of hiding who they are.

"Just ship DirkJake/DaveJade, it's like DirkJade but better" the appeal of DirkJade, at least for me, is the fact that it's a rudimentary version of both Dirk's dynamic with Jake and Jade's dynamic with Dave. I like the fact that they have almost no basis for an actual relationship outside of observing the similarities between their respective family members. It doesn’t have the emotional payoff baked in—you’d have to build it from the ground up, and that’s what makes it fun. I imagine it would start kind of awkward. They’d probably keep measuring each other against the people they’re used to being around. “Jake would’ve laughed at that,” “Dave would’ve handled this differently”, etc. But over time, they’d start seeing each other for who they actually are. That kind of growth would be super slow, but super rewarding. Especially since both Dirk and Jade have a tendency to pull back the metaphorical (and sometimes literal) masks of the people they care about. They’d eventually start doing that for each other, which is where the real emotional weight would come from. My head automatically converts this to post-canon with ult Dirk & Calldie (Alt Callie + Jade) but that’s a more intense dynamic so I think most people would prefer pre-timeline-split DirkJade.

Anyways yeah I just wanted to add some of my thoughts. You don’t have to like them romantically (you do) but I think more people should (are required to) explore the facets of their hypothetical dynamic.

warning im tipsy. ok so its not that i dont ship her with anybody its more that in canon she just never has the chance to really build that type of relationship with anyone.

like jadedave is really cute to me because 1) its a classic and 2) i think jades sincerity can really cut through daves whole schtick. but in the comic its very heavily implied dave and karkat are a thing so lets not interrupt that. theres that moment with davepeta but does davepeta even come to earch c with them where tf do they even go after the kiss? i dont remember. whatever. within the cast we're given its a little difficult to matchmake her with anyone.

here is where i propose jadedirk, a horrible one-sided crush that develops when jade realizes dave is taken and theres literally one other guy thats her type. this is also dirks 13th reason. questions?

i'm casting my vote for most likely out of everyone on earth c to find out that they met each other at the perfectly right time after all the shit they've gone through. jade with her special ability to just cut straight through the bullshit when it comes to conversations, but still being open to playing along and knowing the importance of whimsy and joy. dirk who knows what it's like growing up alone and his quiet support and unwavering belief in those around him, combined with the well-timed recent realization that sometimes you just need to fuckin' listen. both coming and reeling from a pretty confusing and tumultuous breakup that they're not even sure was a breakup??? and now they're basically meeting the parental figure in their respective so's life. it's like when you continue hanging out with your long-term girlfriend's dad after you break up with her because you guys got to be really good bros and honestly dale gets with it. except they've never met each other before so they get to find out all the interesting little familial quirks and they might even get some resolution and insight into understanding more of what da hell was wrong with their significant other in the first place. one big healing process baby. good will hunting. tuesdays with morrie. having a mentor figure act in a parental teaching moment way in their life. but it goes both ways. they're both each other's dads. or grandmas. or something. also they both are actually nerds about and into each other's hobbies instead of just slightly indulging them like the others do which is nice.
