a completely normal neurotypical thing i like to do in age of mythology is strip the map of all finite resources (except usually wood because there's too many trees on most maps).

the strategy is as follows:

Set the game to "Conquest"

Defeat army as usual. Set your soldiers to "Stand Ground" and avoid the town center as much as you can. Either a town center or a market must remain.

Destroy all civilians, gardens, farms, docks and markets so that they can't recover. Farms, docks and markets are optional as long as you kill all civilians, fishing boats and caravans, but leaving the markets will make this step slower.

Get as many civilians as possible. You can destroy your entire army to make population room, but I have chosen not to at this time. Destroy your caravans by walking them past the surviving town center; this is the most soul-destroying part of the process imo.

Send your soldiers, or a designated squad of civilians, to every animal on the map and kill them all. No need to harvest their remains; they'll decay on their own in time.

This is a good time to fully explore the map and make sure you didn't miss any gold mines, relics, innocent herds of deer etc.

Send your other civilians to every gold mine on the map. I prefer to go from mine to mine. This takes about 10 minutes ime.

Now only wood is left. Does this matter? There's a lot of wood and gathering it all doesn't change the minimap. If it doesn't change the minimap, have you even accomplished anything?

Pick a single favoured unit to remove the town center's remaining 9hp.

Congratulations, you have laid waste to the region. Even your followers will be unable to sustain themselves in this land and they will eventually disperse. Your name will be whispered throughout history; your enemies will be remembered only as ash.
