Gen Work June: A month to share some gen work
(That's gen as in relationship category, not gen as in rating)
The Goal:
There are some prompts below if you want to write or draw or something based on one of them (or not based on one of them). Or you can just share some of your old work you think deserves another go around at attention. Or make a rec list of your favourite gen works. Reblog your favourite art. Just leave a nice comment for someone to find, all of it counts here.
And if you want things reblogged here, tag @genworkjune, and there's an AO3 collection with the same name if you want to use that.
The Rules:
The work has to be gen- that is, not focused on a romantic relationship. For the purposes of this event background romantic relationships are fine, as long as they aren't the focus.
It would be appreciated if you could include major warnings, image descriptions, and stick very long posts at least partly under a read more, though there will be some slack allowed for older posts that are being reblogged. Also, if you're reccing some art or fic by dropping a link in the inbox please at least include the website if not the whole link copied and pasted, rather than just a hyperlink under an "x".
The Prompts:
(These are intended as a jumping off point only- you don't have to use these and they can be interpreted as loosely as you want. You can fill one, you can fill multiple, you can use multiple in one work, we're going for easy as you need it to be here)
Character Study
Self Discovery
Mentor-Mentee Relationship
Summer
Outfits
Twisting The Trope
Thanks for reading and I hope you have fun!

i haven't gotten as many messages about it recently bc bg has been on strike for so long, and i've mentioned it before, but i just wanted to throw out there that i absolutely don't want anyone to feel bad if they can't match the productivity i had for tlou at my peak. i got a lot of questions about how i could turn out fairly long fics almost every day, and the answer is that it was literally like a second job after my actual job. I would wake up, write before work, write on my lunch break, and then start writing again right after. I would stay up way too late to keep writing/editing and then get up and do it again. I literally wrote a fic in pieces by pulling over on a road trip to type as fast as I could on my phone for new ideas. i was literally moving cross country and almost sprinted to get my laptop out each time i stopped so i could get all my ideas out. at my ABSOLUTE fingers flying bc the words are flowing speed, i can get out about 900-1000 words an hour, so my fics were taking about 8 hours total along with editing time. literally ALL of my free time each day was involved in putting a fic out PLUS some borrowed from sleeping.
and don't get me wrong, I did it bc I enjoyed it! I wouldn't have done it otherwise. I love storytelling and playing with these characters, but like. I just wanna make sure no one feels bad if they couldn't/can't reach that productivity bc it's an INSANE amount of work and time. even I couldn't keep it going forever. i had a really long streak of being able to put out a crazy amount of work, but like. some of the messages have made me feel bad when people are like "you're doing all this, and i can't even get 2k in a week!"
like...it's okay to not put out a minimum of 8k almost every single day for months on end. that's not sustainable. it might be fun to have so much creativity happening (and it is! again, i don't regret it. i wouldn't have done it if i didn't derive pleasure from it), but also like. it does have to come at the expense of almost everything else. i'm SUPER under-read in the fandom, for example, bc i just didn't have time when the fandom was at its peak. i couldn't read bc i was too busy writing, and that also includes book books, too. i would literally even go to library craft events, get home, and IMMEDIATELY get back on my laptop and keep writing. ANY tiny little stretch of freetime was used for writing. even while watching tv, i was only ever half paying attention bc i was writing.
i just wanted to throw it out there bc i've gotten a couple messages recently since i've started posting again, and i just wanted to make sure to make it clear that like. it's probably GOOD for you if you're not churning out fics at that rate.
it means you're actually doing things other than just being an anti-social goblin on your laptop for hours on end. XD

I have a question for the fanfic writers among you: How do you treat your work in progress when a very similar story is put out there? Do you go on writing - in the spirit that everything is unique in its own way - or do you abandon the piece - in the spirit of preventing 'superfluous' contributions?
Let's add a further wrench into the process by saying the recently published work by another author, so similar to your own, seems so much better written than your own (granted we are always our own worst critics). Where do you go with that?
Maybe this is a question for readers, too. Do you mind reading similar works/story lines?

RULES: Post the last sentence you wrote (fanfic / original / anything) and tag as many people as there are words in the sentence
Tagged by @alittleflashvibe thank you! I am very excited to read your fic from that sentence. I haven't done mountains and mountains of writing for the past few days (having a break after somehow managing to get those other fics done), but I have finally had an idea for the Wally Fic! Still a little bit between what I have and the part I've just written, but I am having Ideas so here's a sentence:
“Time is a gift,” Henry said.
Tagging @goldheartedchaoticdisaster @shrinkthisviolet @angst-is-love-angst-is-life @kitkatt0430 @ftl-faster-than-life @simpledontmeanpeachy if you'd like?

Id like to propose we invent a paper document u can have where it states that youve had a prescription for so many years, that u can just have it. Walk into any pharmacy. 200 miles from home. Nobody has ever heard of you. Show paper. Get prescription. For free. A prescription diploma. You put in so many years on this prescription, you graduate from having to ask for it. Life could be so perfect.

Well you see minors under 25 years old should not be allowed to get gender reassignment surgery because what if they go to the clinic but instead of giving them a normal penis the nurses mess up and give them the evil penis. That's irreversible

Why do people need subtitles to watch a show in English? I don't get it. What is wrong with the ears of young people?

for the past few years i’ve had a personal rule that i do not sign anything i haven’t read - mostly because i genuinely think it’s a good idea, but also as a kind of social experiment - and i wanna share some observations
when i worked at an amusement park, i was one of like two or three people in a group of around twenty young adults who read the employment contract
i gave up on reading every TOS and privacy policy early on - now i only read them if it’s a website or company i’ll be giving personal information to (and even then i only skim them) - but i’ve never found anything super suspect in one
i also have an exception for when i’m made to feel like i’d be an asshole for stopping to read something. notable examples of this going into effect include the patient-intake paperwork at the ER when i went in a few months ago. (i really wish i’d just gone ahead and been the asshole in that situation, even though i have no reason to think there was anything bad in it)
i think the only time i was the only one to read something that the people who gave it to us actually wanted us to read was the waiver at a cat café, which included a lot of safety information about how to interact with the cats
one time i was approached by a guy with a petition who told me it was an anti-fracking petition (which was a real petition that was going around at the time), but the paper he handed me was a petition to instate a “citizenship requirement” for voting. i pointed this out to him and he tried to convince me that even though that’s what it said, it’s not really what my signature meant, and then named the university he graduated from as though it gave him some level of extra credibility??
i have more than once been given a HIPPA form at a doctor’s office where my signature certifies that i’ve been offered a copy of their privacy practices, when i had not, in fact, been offered a copy of their privacy practices. the last time this happened, the receptionist didn’t actually have a copy of their privacy practices, and had to get me to me sign it several days later once she got a copy from her manager
99% of people are very accommodating when you tell them “i want to read this before i sign it,” but it’s never what they’re expecting
on a related note, if someone thinks it’s important that you know what’s in something they’re giving you to sign, they won’t wait for you to read it - they’ll go through, point to each section, and tell you what it says. this is what happened when i signed my lease, and it’s actually a pretty common instance of using my asshole exception, because then i feel like i’m calling the person a liar if i stop to read it myself
the moral of the story is… like… we treat a signature like it’s the absolute most surefire way of saying “yes i understand this and agree to it,” but in practice there’s not even a pretense that a signature means you’ve READ whatever you’re signing. in fact, handing someone a piece of paper and saying “sign here” is one of the LEAST effective ways to make sure they understand and agree to something, and PEOPLE KNOW THIS, and we do it ANYWAY because what else are we gonna do? notarize it??
i don’t have a solution but like. that’s kinda fucked up, you know?

Thanks for the question, Anon! I had to combine the “10” with the “more than 10” because I ran out of space! Hope it works.
For me I have a lot of health issues and can’t work because of it, and family issues as well, but if it was a perfect world, I would choose two kids. That way they have each other.
