Something Happened to him and now he's wildly in lust/love with benitez. so now vincent can't go back to kabul and he's just going to make the best of it trying to save tedesco's soul and craft a liberal pope from extremely subpar material by becoming his work wife. the thread-pulling is all v subtle and loving but vincent is def the gray eminence behind the throne

like whenever tedesco is gearing up to be awful, vincent puts a hand on his arm and just goes "pius... 😌" in the same tone a spouse of 20 years would say "darling..." and suddenly tedesco calms down
