if I had a nickel for every time, ateez mistakenly picked Yunho as the culprit in an escape room type murder mystery content, I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's still weird that it happened twice.
It's actually kind of hilarious how fast the rest of ateez turn on him, the moment he's not being super competitive at whatever game they're playing.

I usually am a mingi is cute truther because he is. If he stays in the background of a shot long enough, or if he gets lost in thought, he will start pulling these facial expressions that are just so fucking cute. He also has this air of the youngest child — clearly used to being pampered — which, when you pair it with his face, creates such a stark contrast that it makes you squint.
The only member who calls him cute, however, is Yunho. The other members don't call him princess Mingki, nor do they push it unless Yunho starts it. Even Mingi, who acknowledges the nickname, does very little to actually push it unless he's explicitly asked to do so.
So I feel Yunho's "Mingi is cute" agenda is less about Ateez trying to regulate their collective image as a group and more about Yunho managing his own. Most of the time, he does it for one of two reasons. Firstly, to say Mingi's actually really cute, but you won't see this because you are not as close to him as I am, and you'll never be, and secondly, to promote his own masculinity. It's him saying, you see this very charming, very traditionally manly man who can make entire stadiums bark for him? He's actually a meek little princess that needs to be taken care of at all times or else he'll implode, and I am the prince, because I am strong and dependable, so if you really think about it, I am the manliest man that's ever manned- even if that's not really my vibe physically.
And with the way that video was edited, I find it hard to believe that that was Yunho defending Mingi's personality. Mingi didn’t need help in that particular situation — he’d already charmed the shit out of the host. Hell, they even spent a noticeable part of the video flinging into each other and laughing like schoolgirls. No, this was Yunho realizing he’d just been called mean and manipulative and retaking control of the narrative.
Because, guys, Mingi is just joking. We've been friends for like ever, and he's a meek little princess. Would a princess be friends with the big bad wolf? I don't fucking think so. And Hongjoong, who quite cleverly pointed out that the only thing legitimising Mingi's playful jabs is me joining in, is just fucking around. You know why? Because KQ made ateez for us three, so we're super tight like that. So, they can call me mean, but I am not. In fact, I am the nicest guy to ever nice, and this is all in good fun.
Yunho being the Mingi explainer is so fascinating to me; because it's clear that anyone who talks to Mingi for more than five minutes finds him utterly charming. His wide and varied social circle attests to his ability to make friends easily. Yet Yunho always makes it a point to inform people (or reassure them) that Mingi is nothing like the scary first impression he often gives via his on-stage drag performance of hyper-sexual masculinity.
"It's just way too sad that ATINY can't see that part of him."
"Mingi might be a bit much (intense) for people meeting him for the first time but once you get to know him, he's really fun. He likes making jokes. He's a really cute guy"
"Introducing my friend, Mingi. My beloved friend, Mingi. he is always full of charisma and on stage, he is endlessly passionate. but whenever we're together, when he smiles/laughs, he's always full of cute charm."
"At home he is very cute"
"I think Mingi's charm point is the cuteness within all that charisma"
I really wonder where this stems from; is it a protective (defensive?) gesture from a friend who watched as someone he cared about went on hiatus for anxiety-related mental health reasons? Is it Yunho trying to manage or direct our perception of Mingi because it benefits the group's image to have the existence of a Princess Minki who helps diffuse the more critical responses to Ateez's performance style? (This is similar to how the other members publicly manage the image of San: he's pouting kitty cat in the body of a manhwa protagonist). Is this part of their fanservice -- Yunho bragging about his exclusive access to Mingi's cutest self that not even ATINY can see?
There's plenty of room to speculate but I do find it interesting that this has been a recurring motif in their on-camera shipwork for years!
#ateez#song mingi#jeong yunho#yungi#ateez meta#hongjoong's stats are not zero he's actually super socially aware#yunho meta#Yunho being called out for being the instigator is what I live for#And he's so graceful with it too#blink and you'll miss it#No wonder he's friend with Mingi who was making enemies left and right predebut#He just didn't need to be openly hostile#because Mingi was doing it hard enough for the both of them#Mingi’s still fucking cute#i stand by that statement

Isn’t it funny how kpop artists are not allowed to say imma beat that pussy up but they are almost always peddling sex appeal in some way so we get one thousand metaphors instead and it’s like
girl group lyrics: look at my cookie my cake my strawberry cream sundae because it’s sweet and it’s pink and it’s fresh and it’s hot and if you want it you can taste it but not everyone can taste it but you can touch it and feel it and it feel so good. My sundae my sundae everybody now 1 2 3 shake it shake it
boy group lyrics: come ride on me and around me and on top of me and jump on top of me and we are jumping around and around and we are close to each other because we are driving in the car. And you can drive my car and we can drive the car together and we can drive so hard and so fast. Vroom vroom skrrt skrrt let’s ride let’s go let’s jump up and down I love my car it’s fun.

🫵 the yungi essays
i love them
you are somehow in my brain speaking the exact same things that i have been thinking onto tumblr
thank you
also please write more (honestly about any of them im very intrigued on how you see dynamics like matz or woosansang (bc i have some thoughts about that one) or jongsang or woosan or really any of the dynamics that are seen as the "iconic ships" of ateez)
Oh fuck, I have so many thoughts about Woosansang, I wouldn't know where to start. My hyperfixation on Yeosang is reaching Yungi-levels of psychosis.
Please tell me your thoughts about woosansang, so we can be crazy together.

When the teaser for now this house ain't a home dropped, I braced myself for the biggest ick of my life. I thought "Now it was going to be another one of those "oh look at her—her dad’s horrible, poor girl, I’m so sad and also weirdly aroused" kind of songs, and I have zero tolerance for that kind of bullshit. Especially from men.
But PRAISE THE LORD, it's about pregnancy scares. Crisis averted.
Edenary, I'm sorry for doubting you (I'm not. You've written some questionable things before), may your condom never break again.

If I was Alexander the Great and I knew this man existed, no troop mutiny could have stopped me from crossing the Ganges River.
Like, I'm sorry you guys want to get home because you have like families and shit and you went from not knowing what elephants were to having to fight battles against them, but you're gonna have to keep walking.
I would circumnavigate the whole world on a hot pink flamingo float for this man.

I was on a business trip.
Why is Seonghwa serving Troye Sivan circa summer of 2023? Is lemon drop going to be about doing poppers in a club in Berlin? Because if so, I'm super locked in.

id LOVE to hear your opinion on this! especially the part about Mingi's other best friend that he may or may not prefer to Yunho... and Yunho holding a grudge for YEARS:
https://www.tumblr.com/karmacharmeleon18/783352901371346944/yes-and-you-can-bet-mingi-noticed-as-he-tends-to?source=share
Hello there. Bet you thought I’d never reply.
The reason it took me so long to answer is that I originally planned to include this in Part 3 of the Yungi Rampage™. However, the essay I wrote ended up being a bit too delusional — even for me.
So now that I’ve scrapped that idea, I can finally respond to your ask with a clear conscience.
So wait a moment while I wrap a piece of tinfoil around my head in preparation for some completely off-the-wall statements I have absolutely no viable proof for — other than divine premonition. (I did an edible.)
The apple of Eris. The other woman. Hyeongyu.
Yunho claims they’re close. I call his bluff. Sure, they might be friendly — but close? Unlikely. If they were close, Yunho wouldn’t pick a fight with him in front of an audience. He knows that if Mingi showed even a hint of favoritism toward him, some fans wouldn’t be too thrilled. No — Yunho is bitter.
Mingi, from the moment they met, has worshipped the ground Yunho walks on. In the early days, he looked at him with almost religious conviction. And to receive that kind of attention and not let it get to your head? Nearly impossible.
So imagine how Yunho must’ve felt when Mingi couldn’t choose between the two of them during that pre-debut business dinner. Yunho had no reason to believe Mingi wouldn’t pick him. After all, if Mingi’s consistent about one thing, it’s singing Yunho’s praises.
But no — weirdly egalitarian Mingi, who I genuinely believe doesn’t have a single mean bone in his body, put his foot down. He liked them both. Why should he have to choose? They were both his friends. Whatever choice he made, he’d be wronging one. It didn’t matter that Hyeongyu wasn’t there and might never find out. It would still be unfair.
Yunho did not mess with that. To him, there’s no such thing as a draw. You either win, or you lose. And he lost. He lost so hard he waited several years for the perfect moment to bring it back up.
Because at that point, winning was a matter of principle.
Which brings us to the most recent — and quite conveniently livestreamed — instance of “me or him?”
This time, Yunho came prepared. Holding the Chekhov’s gun that is their fanbase straight to his temple.
This wasn’t just between the two of them and Sandra from Accounting anymore. No. The choice was now a standard friend and a friend/ coworker/ roommate. And, oh! Don't forget that being publicly shipped with the latter is an active part of your shared worklife. And now, whatever answer Mingi gave would be immortalized on the internet.
Understandably, Mingi caved to the pressure.
“Right now, it’s you. We even work together,” he said — leaving just enough wiggle room to backtrack if Hyeongyu ever confronted him.
And Yunho once again hated that. Technically, he won — but it didn’t feel like a win. Sure, he was declared the favorite, but not for the right reasons. He didn’t want a pity point because they work together. He wanted a clean, perfect score — for being the tallest, most handsome, great-at-everything, bestest friend Mingi has.
He wanted to hear something like: I’ve been planning everything I’ll do with you since the moment I met you, you sexy, sexy man who’s also athletically gifted!
But Mingi didn’t deliver (dare I say, on purpose?). And the Chekhov’s gun misfired — making them both look a bit silly and hurting Yunho's feelings/pride (I’ll leave it to you to decide which one took the bigger hit).
One shot, two kills.
The way Yunho’s attempts to control the narrative around Mingi keep blowing up in his face — like a forgotten WWII hand grenade dug up in central Europe — should be studied. They’ve known each other for 11 years, and somehow he’s still bad at handling Mingi.
And so, once again, Yunho launches into damage control:
“Hahaha guys, Mingi is being so silly again… Why is he so serious about this? I swear I’m super chill… Me? Mad? Of course not. In fact, I’m so not mad, I’m going to ignore any comment that doesn’t exclusively talk about how hot I am — until you all forget this happened…”
Super demure. Super mindful.
I consider this pt 2.5 of the Yungi Trillogy. Will I ever write pt 3? Who knows? Definitely not me.

hi i just wanted to say that i just came across your tumblr, read all your essays about yunho and yungi and i'm absolutely living for it....keep doing whatever you're doing because i can genuinely relate to your words and how you describe/interpret their dinamics (specially about yunho....i mean how can a man be such a man while being a man)
haha, thank you, I'm doing all of this mostly for attention, so I'm really glad you're giving it to me.
I'm really happy that my ateez hyperfixation can now impact negatively more people than just myself.
