Solving Problems the Write Way
Tumblr media
Solving problems by writing them out has been KEY in my self-development. Having a bit of nerves going out to promote a gym led me to cracking open evernote and getting my thoughts out of my head and onto paper. You'd be amazed how much you can solve problems by asking the right questions regarding the issue. You can do this with anything.
I have been given the opportunity to train at a the best gym in Seattle in return for handing out some fliers a few times a week. This is quite an opportunity considering the level of fighters over there. The amount of knowledge I can accumulate through the training greatly surpasses the amount of work I'd have to put in to get there.
Another thing. This is an opportunity for me to learn how to hand out fliers. As I am creating my own business and developing my own client base I have the opportunity to experiment with another.
I have the opportunity to learn how, where, and when to hand out advertisements for my business. I have the opportunity to ponder improvements to business cards, target customer markets, and sales pitches. Practicing sales pitches for Ivans gives me practice pitching for myself.
Furthermore, I can cross promote. I can hand out my business card and Ivans fliers at the same time. I can note that I am a fighter and a personal trainer at a gym nearby so I can give them additional strength and cardiovascular training. Even if none of those who receive a flier end up at either of our establishments, one more person knows about it. Perhaps they'll throw that card somewhere and someone interested will find it. Maybe their husband, wife, girlfriend, or cousin will come across it on their nightstand. You never know.
There are a few areas that I need to clarify with Ivan such as:
The ability to offer free classes by showing the card
The limitations he has on where I pass out these fliers - does he have a problem if I do it in parking garages? At malls? Does he want me to just hand them to people and not stick them on cars?
Some places/ways I can hand out these fliers:
Leave them in bus seats
Leave them on the SLU trolly
Put them on cars on the street
Put them on cars in parking garages
Hand them out to people in line
Work trade-offs with people running food stands in return for letting me leave my fliers there
Arrive early and chat with the workers
Offer free training sessions, most won't accept, but will appreciate the offer
Leave them on tables at 95 slide when UFC fight nights occur
Opportunities this task presents
Increase sales skills
Increase communication skills
Increase creativity for promotion
Increase exposure to specific client base
Increase practice getting in a sociable state of mind
Get to enjoy the sunshine
Ways to make this more enjoyable/easier to undergo
Bring a friend and make it fun
Can offer friend a trade off for their time
Bring music
Workout before hand so you have that endorphin high
Work your way up to up close sales by
Placing fliers on cars
Being selective of who you offer to (people alone or in pairs)
Remind yourself mentally of the benefits of the gym and how you are doing those you offer fliers to a service - they need to get in shape, they should know how to defend themselves, they will be joining an awesome gym
Come up with catchy openers and sales pitches
Set small goals - hand out 1 flier - Hand out 1 more - Hand out 10 - so on
Dress well - looking presentable will make you feel better about approaching others
Have fun! Have fun with your pitch, have fun with your approach, have fun meeting new people
Wear sweet marvel shirts (amazon dudes/babes love comics)
Lines to approach people with:
You guys like UFC?
Have you gotten one of these yet?
Ladies!!
Hey guys, I'm promoting...
You got a plan to get honeys this summer?
Free (kickboxing) lessons
Learn how to beat up your boss
Compliment someone on their attire
Tumblr media
Passing out these fliers will hurt my wallet if it eats into my training time. 2 hours a week, 4 weeks a month is 8 hours a month. It would only take me 3 training sessions to pay for a membership over at Ivans. Perhaps I can keep this gig for the summer though, just for practice. Something to consider.

Very interesting book that can help give some understanding to how your brain functions and how that affects your habits (getting your ass to the gym!) and skills (fighting ability).

Here's fight #2. Took place on feb. 1st just north of Seattle.
My opponent came out throwing some hard shots and ended up catching me with a knee early on that rocked me. Round 1 is me getting my shit together. Round 2 I start to feel more comfortable working on that leg and reading more of my opponents shots. Round 3 he's tired and I'm confident (and desperate), almost finish him in the last two exchanges, but he's able to wrap me up and get through it.
Tough fight, had a blast.

Moving Forward
Tumblr media
Been doing my best to stay motivated since my last fight. My coach has been out sick and we haven't been able to talk about any upcoming fights.
After watching video of my fight some key improvements would be lateral movement, clinch work, and aggression.
Now that my shins are feeling a bit better - I could have cared for them more, but didn't expect them to be aggravated for so long - I'll be swinging by a few gyms in the area. I'm looking for a spot that has a good coach and a good team. I need to surround myself with other people who are driven to move forward in the sport and in life.
I think I already know I"ll end up at Ivans, but figure I'll meet some more people and check out a class or two at some other facilities.
Sucks that everything is geared towards MMA here - a straight kickboxing or Muay Thai gym would be IDEAL.
Aside from not training I've been putting a lot of time in developing a webpage for personal training. A lot of information is already on the web, so I'd just like to give people a basic understanding for things like what carbohydrates are and how your body uses water.
I've considered working for a gym again cause of the amount of time it takes to build this page and get clients lined up, then I remember that I'd have to sell whatever crap supplements that the gym promotes and give advice I may not agree with. Being able to give my own opinions and promote what I think are the best products is well worth the stress.

The Way of the Fight
Your next fight might be your last. Keep this in mind throughout your training.
"Pick a goal, make a realistic plan to reach that goal, work through each step of the plan, and repeat." -GSP
"We will repeat it until it’s mastered, no matter when that will be. One certainty; it will be." -GSP
”..truly great human behavior is impossible without this central part of your life being set up and governed by routine.” - John Danaher
"My front foot always points to my adversary. This is important because it stops my opponent from having or developing an angle on me." -GSP
"You are in constant change. Your weaknesses change shape. Sometimes they disappear. Your strengths grow, they evolve, and they too change shape." -GSP
”..the power of the marriage of discipline and vision..” -John Danaher
"Minimize the risk while maximizing the risk to your opponent." -GSP
Make your opponent open up in desperation.
"You never base (an opponents reach) based on height exclusively, but on reach too." -GSP
"We’re all moving towards a place that represents who we imagine we want to be in the future." -GSP
"I read somewhere that sometimes it’s easier to start at the end and play the story backwards-it helps you get rid of the obstacles because the whole story strats with your goal being achieved." -GSP on visualization

Quote
“You don’t get better on the days when you feel like going. You get better on the days when you don’t want to go, but you go anyway. If you can overcome the negative energy coming from your tired body or unmotivated mind, you will grow and become better. It won’t be the best workout you have, you won’t accomplish as much as what you usually do when you actually feel good, but that doesn’t matter. Growth is a long term game, and the crappy days are more important.”
