The twisted king
Some Shiggy fanart ’cause I love this man.
(Just a heads-up, there’s probably gonna be a lot of MHA fanart coming up ’cause I’m obsessed with this series.)

Mori + the trolley problem
okay so...it's really apparent that a lot of this fandom's sense of ethics/morality is, uh, undercooked, to say the least. because I keep seeing people talk about mori's decisions in the military and Port Mafia all like...
"Well, if *I* were in a situation where I had to choose between two terrible, horrifying and traumatizing options where people can and will die, I would simply be smart enough to choose a third option that does not exist :)"
like...okay.
the trolley problem isn't JUST a meme. it's an exercise in making a choice between two profoundly terrible options, which is a thing that actually does happen in real life. (at the risk of sounding condescending...the trolley that's about to run people over is a metaphor. i hope that much is clear lol)
it's a reminder that sometimes there is no winning, but choices have to be made regardless (even if that choice is to not act at all, which...is often the worst choice to make).
trolley problems aren't supposed to be easy. if it's easy, it's either a bad trolley problem, you're more driven by your emotional biases than you realize, or because you think there's some third option there that doesn't actually exist within the confines of the problem.
the thing about mori is that his life as we've seen it is a series of trolley problems.
he fought in an unwinnable war, where his only tool to save lives was at the expense of a little girl's sanity.
since, he's taken on the burden of curing the ills of Yokohama's very real, very bad crime problem. he could be a despot like the previous boss, but instead, he tries his hardest to practice harm reduction wherever possible. he looks for the option that promotes the MOST peace, even if it sacrifices certain individuals in the process.
does he always manage?
NOPE. but it's usually due to unforeseen circumstance, like with the Guild and Q, or because there was literally no good option available, like with Yosano in the war. not because he's being intentionally malevolent.
the thing that sets dazai (our other hyperlogical problem-solver in the story, ranpo notwithstanding) apart from mori (and, quite frankly, all of us in the audience) is that he has the creativity and risk calculation skills (for either mundane or superhuman reasons) to figure out that insane third option.
it's not that dazai's a BETTER person making BETTER decisions. it's that he's not only more skilled, but is afforded the luxury of fighting outside a life of violence and abuse.
(and even then...what he did to akutagawa all all those unnamed victims of his is, IMO, just as profoundly shitty as what mori did to yosano and within the mafia. just something to chew on, dazai fans.)
i think mori WANTS to take the insane third option, but can't justify the risk himself, and that's why he trusts and values dazai so much.
that's why he wants dazai as his successor, with chuuya at his side.
he's making all the hard decisions now, so that he can pass the reigns on to two people who can be even kinder and more compassionate and more creative than he's ever been allowed to be.
